Wi h aging, he e a e changes in body composi ion ha ha e g ea in luence in he com o
o he elde ly and can pu hei own heal h in ques ion. Dec eased muscle mass and bone
mass and inc eased a mass a e iew equen ly on his popula ion, con ibu ing o he
weakness.
Adding o hese changes, inc easing seden a y li es yle has a majo impac on heal h and
well - being o elde pe sons.

The aim o his s udy was o e alua e a ep esen a i e sample o he popula ion o
Au onomous Region o Madei a o e he age o 65. In o al 1181 indi iduals o all coun ies
and pa ishes in he egion we e su eyed. Da a collec ion was conduc ed be ween Feb ua y
and Augus o 2013.
Acco ding o he objec i es, a ques ionnai e was de eloped which included ques ions
ela ed o sociodemog aphic cha ac e is ics, an h opome ic da a, clinicopa hological
backg ound, assessing nu i ional isk, among o he s.
The pa ame e s ha showed in luence on an h opome ic alues in his popula ion we e
gende , age, educa ion, he place o esidence and ype o physical ac i i y pe o med. The
a e age weigh was 72,2 kg and he a e age BMI was 29,4 kg/m2, alues highe han ound
in o he s udies in Po ugal.
Gende and physical ac i i y e eled o in luence body composi ion o old people. Women
and inac i e pe sons had highe alues o he pa ame e s used o assess a mass and lowe
alues o he ones ha measu e lean mass. Po o San o was he coun y wi h he highe
BMI and body a pe cen age. On he o he hand, in San a C uz, he body a pe cen age
was he lowes and alues o muscle mass we e he highes .
In conclusion, olde people in Madei a A chipelago a e a isk o de eloping me abolic
