Flipped classroom model before and during covid-19: using technology to develop 21st century skills

Abstract

Purpose – The confidence placed in the use of technology and other computing resources is an important support for the deep transformation toward processes of very high quality teaching-learning based on active learning. This paper aims to present and describe a higher education experience with Flipped Learning before and during the transformation of education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the study analyzes the effectiveness perceived by university students of Flipped Learning for the development of competencies for the 21st century. Design/methodology/approach – For this study, a quantitative methodology is used in which 376 university students fill out a questionnaire after experiencing several sessions with an inverted classroom under both onsite and online instructions. Findings – On average, the results show a high agreement among students on the benefits or effectiveness that learning designs with Flipped Classroom have on the development of skills that will be useful for their personal and professional future. These competencies include character building, collaboration, communication, citizenship, critical thinking and creativity. At the same time, and depending on some control variables such as the modality of teaching (onsite or online), the course, the predisposition to innovate or previous experience with innovation, significant differences are also observed. Originality/value – Education and learning have the need to respond to the different educational and training needs for the future. In this sense, the Flipped Classroom methodology allows the development of skills for the 21st century. In turn, this approach also makes it possible to approach blended learning. Experiences such as the one described in this study will characterize the future of education. his challenge, digi al ools and di e en so wa e a e posi ioned as esou ces wi h be e
esul s han adi ional eaching (Reime s and Schleiche , 2020;Uluyol and Sahin, 2016).

Wi h he unexpec ed a i al o he COVID-19 pandemic and i s ine i able consequences, he

each online synch onously o asynch onously (Ka alis and Raikou, 2020;Vine e al.,2020).
Among hese challenges is de eloping he skills equi ed o he 21s cen u y. In his
con ex , he pedagogical model o a Flipped Class oom, o Flipped Lea ning (among o he
names), enables he implemen a ion o a ious didac ic modali ies. Among many o he
issues, eflec ion, discussion and collabo a ion among s uden s, eache s and he con ex in
which he lea ning akes place a e allowed (A nold-Ga za, 2014).
O ganizing he dynamics o a class oom om he pedagogical pe spec i e o he Flipped
Class oom implies conside ing a se o ele an aspec s. Fi s , Schmid and Ralph (2016)
highligh ed he use o audio isual esou ces (such as ideos). Wi h an app oxima e du a ion
o be ween 10 and 15 min, he eache p esen s heo e ical knowledge and lea ning h ough
audio isual esou ces. In he design o hese p oduc s, he academic and aes he ic issues, he
dynamism in he p esen a ion o he con en s, and he simplici y o he e ec s and he way
in which he eco ding is designed, a e e y impo an (Ga cía-Gil and C emades-And eu,
2019). Since i began o be used, he essence o he Flipped Class oom has been o ien ed

p ocess, echnology and he di e en ac i i y modules (which include ques ionnai es, g oup
discussions, p ac ical ac i i ies, pee lea ning and u o ing, among o he ac ions) gene a e

In ecen yea s, Flipped Lea ning has a ac ed mo e and mo e ollowe s. Thus, eache s
a di e en educa ional le els and con ex s ha e joined a Flipped Lea ning on which
nume ous in es iga ions al eady exis (Ka abulu -Ilgu e al.,2017;Se gis e al., 2018;Tou 

and San iago, 2015). In he con ex o Highe Educa ion, he applica ions and expe iences

an e al.,2017;Lee, 2018;Meh ing and Leis, 2018).
In all o hem, he mul iple benefi s ha his pedagogical esou ce gene a es o lea ning and

e al., 2015;Pien a, 2016). Among hese a o able aspec s, men ion is made o he e ficiency

Likewise, he sys ema ic e iew by O’Flahe y and Phillips (2015) concluded ha Flipped

s uden s (Onyema and Daniil, 2017;Opa aocha e al.,2014). Unlike p e ious gene a ions,

con en ional eaching (Roehl e al.,2013). In his sense, me hodological ini ia i es based on
ac i e eaching designs, such as he Flipped Class oom, p omo e deep lea ning ha defines
he cha ac e and he new gene a ions o he knowledge socie y. P ecisely o his eason,
some s udies began o ocus hei in e es on he analysis ha he benefi s o applying ac i e
lea ning app oaches ha e on he de elopmen o skills and compe encies o he 21s cen u y
(Niemo e al.,2016). These skills, specified in Fullan and Langwo hy’s (2013) p oposal,
include cha ac e building, ci izenship, communica ion, c i ical hinking, collabo a ion and
c ea i i y. Thus, he me hodologies in which he maximum use o communica ion ne wo ks
and he inc easing a ailabili y o educa ional esou ces a e combined, lead o he de elopmen
o cha ac e quali ies equi ed by s uden s o he 21s cen u y (Bezanilla e al., 2019).

sessions. This pe cei ed demand was also highligh ed in he p e ious li e a u e (Gianoni-
Capenakas e al., 2019).

Flipped Class oom expe ience p ocedu e
Due o he dispa i y o cha ac e is ics p esen ed by he s uc u e and con en o each subjec
in which he expe ience has been implemen ed, a se o minimum c i e ia o homogenei y
we e es ablished o ensu e simila guidelines o he de elopmen o he lea ning model o
he Flipped Class oom. Fi s , he heo e ical con en was ese ed o au onomous lea ning
sessions. Subsequen ly, he lea ning sessions wi h he eache could be onsi e in he
uni e si y class oom (i he classes we e held p io o he COVID-19 pandemic) o
synch onous (i he classes we e held in a i ual o ma due o suspension o class oom
a endance). In any case, hese sessions we e in ended o eflec on he ma e ial analyzed
au onomously and o consolida e e e y hing p e iously s udied (Roach, 2014). Du ing he
h ee weeks o he s udy, each eache had o plan and design he audio isual ma e ial ha
included he con en o be lea ned. F om he coo dina ion o he p ojec , hey we e
ecommended o ely on figu es, diag ams, g aphics and images, as long as he con en o
he subjec was adequa e.
Fu he mo e, p io o he Flipped Lea ning sessions, he dynamics o his me hodology
we e explained o he s uden s. Gi en he no el y o he expe ience, special emphasis was
placed on he need o access he audio isual ma e ial p o ided by he eache in he

elabo a ion o mind maps o design o ques ions o exchange wi h o he classma es. Each

Me hod
A quan i a i e s udy is p esen ed wi h a desc ip i e su ey and non-expe imen al cha ac e
based on a ques ionnai e. This app oxima es he objec i e unde -s udy wi hou in oducing
modifica ions o he a iables, wi h he aim o explo ing and desc ibing i (Lie z, 2010). This
ype o design allows an objec i e and compa able sys ema ic desc ip ion o cha ac e is ics
and ac s o a popula ion. The e o e, his is a aluable sou ce o in o ma ion o analyzing
he pe cep ions o uni e si y s uden s.
Sampling and da a collec ion
The sampling o his s udy consis s o 376 s uden s om highe educa ion o a Spanish
Uni e si y Ins i u ion. The s udy was launched du ing he fi s and second semes e s o he
2019-2020 academic yea . As seen in Table 1, 75% o he sample was en olled in he ini ial
uni e si y cou ses, and he emaining 25% o he sample was en olled in he las cou ses.
Almos 68% o he sample expe ienced Flipped Class oom sessions as onsi e ins uc ion,
compa ed o 32% who expe ienced i as online ins uc ion. The dis ibu ion o he sample,
based on he a i ude owa d and p edisposi ion o inno a ion, was simila o bo h
ca ego ies. Finally, and in e ms o p e ious expe ience wi h inno a ion, 36.70% o he
sample had no expe ience a all, whe eas 63.30% did ha e some p io con ac .

Class oom expe iences began (in Oc obe 2019) un il he las (in May 2020).

Resul s
Table 2 p esen s he means, s anda d de ia ion, skewness, ku osis, i em o al co ela ion

o academic pe o mance hanks o hese lea ning dynamics in uni e si y se ings
(C immins and Midki , 2017;Thai e al.,2017), his esea ch has highligh ed he use ulness
o his me hodology o he de elopmen o o he undamen al quali ies ha define a

success ully ace pe sonal, social and p o essional demands.
