The p oduc ion o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) esonances has been measu ed in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =
8.16 TeV using he ALICE de ec o . Resonances a e econs uc ed ia hei had onic decay channels in he
apidi y in e al −0.5 <y<0 and he ans e se momen um spec a a e measu ed o a ious mul iplici y
classes up o pT=20 GeV/c o K
∗(892)0and pT=16 GeV/c o φ(1020). The pT-in eg a ed yields and mean
ans e se momen a a e epo ed and compa ed wi h p e ious esul s in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The xT
scaling o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) esonance p oduc ion is newly es ed in p-Pb collisions and ound o hold in
he high-pT egion a La ge Had on Collide ene gies. The nuclea modi ica ion ac o s (RpPb) as a unc ion o pT
o K∗0and φa √sNN =8.16 TeV a e p esen ed along wi h he new RpPb measu emen s o K∗0,φ,,anda
√sNN =5.02 TeV. A in e media e pT(2–8 GeV/c), RpPb o ,show a C onin-like enhancemen , while
K∗0and φshow no o li le nuclea modi ica ion. A high pT(>8 GeV/c), he RpPb alues o all had ons a e
consis en wi h uni y wi hin unce ain ies. The RpPb o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) a √sNN =8.16 and 5.02 TeV
show no signi ican ene gy dependence.

I. INTRODUCTION
High-ene gy hea y-ion (A-A) collisions p o ide a unique
oppo uni y o s udy he decon ined qua k-gluon plasma
(QGP) c ea ed in such collisions [1–3]. The ho and dense
medium c ea ed in hea y-ion collisions e ol es wi h ime
and cools down o o m a phase whe e had on esonance
gas is s udied. E idence a Rela i is ic Hea y Ion Collide
(RHIC) and he La ge Had on Collide (LHC) sugges ha
he QGP phase is ollowed by a had onic phase whe e he
had ons in e ac ia esca e ing and egene a ion p ocesses,
be o e he inal eeze-ou . Resonances a e sho -li ed had ons
ha decay ia he s ong in e ac ions. They play an impo -
an ole o unde s and he pa icle p oduc ion mechanisms
and o he cha ac e iza ion o he dynamic e olu ion o he
sys em o med in hea y-ion collisions. They a e used as
a sensi i e p obe o he had onic phase, whe e hei mass,
wid h and yield could be modi ied due o in e ac ion o hei
decay p oduc s h ough e-sca e ing and egene a ion p o-
cesses [4–15]. ALICE has p e iously measu ed K∗(892)0and
φ(1020) p oduc ion in pp collisions a √s=5.02, 7, 8, and
13 TeV [16–22], in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =5.02 TeV
[23] and Pb-Pb collisions a √sNN =2.76 and 5.02 TeV
[13,15,18,19].

in high-mul iplici y pp,p-Pb, and d-Au collisions a di e en
ene gies ha e unco e ed s ong lowlike e ec s e en in hese
small collision sys ems [14,22–25], whose o igin is no ully
unde s ood. To in es iga e he mechanism o pa icle p oduc-
ion and he o igin o hese e ec s, he ALICE Collabo a ion
has s udied he mul iplici y dependence o ligh - la o pa i-
cle p oduc ion o many species like π±,K
±,K
0
S,K
∗(892)0,
φ(1020), ,(1520), ∗±,±,∗0,±in p-Pb collisions
a √sNN =5.02 TeV [23,26–29] and in pp collisions a
√s=7 and 13 TeV [17,20,22,30]. This pape epo s on
he mul iplici y dependence o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) meson
p oduc ion a he highes cen e -o -mass ene gy, √sNN =
8.16 TeV, eached a he LHC in p-Pb collisions. This p o ides
an oppo uni y o ex end he p e ious s udies o p oduc ion
o hese pa icles in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =5.02 TeV
[23] o a highe mul iplici y each and a la ge pTco e age.
Had on p oduc ion is go e ned by he so and ha d sca e ing
p ocesses a LHC ene gies. The bulk o pa icles p oduced
in high-ene gy collisions is domina ed by low ans e se
momen um pa icles om so in e ac ions, which a e nonpe -
u ba i e in na u e. The yield o pa icles a low pTis no well
unde s ood om he i s p inciples o QCD and hei desc ip-
ion elies on phenomenological QCD-based models such as
EPOS-LHC, DPMJET, and HIJING. The measu emen s in he
low-momen um egion o he spec a p esen ed in his a icle
p o ide inpu o he uning o hese e en gene a o s. In his
pape , measu emen s o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) a e compa ed
wi h p edic ions om EPOS-LHC [31], DPMJET [32], and
HIJING [33].
The ans e se momen um spec a o ligh – la o had ons
ha e shown a clea e olu ion wi h mul iplici y in high-ene gy
pp and p-Pb collisions [17,22,23,26,34], simila o ha ob-
se ed in Pb-Pb collisions [13,18,19,35,36], whe e in he la e

case he e ec is usually a ibu ed o a collec i e expansion
o he sys em. The inc ease in slope o he pTspec a as a
unc ion o mul iplici y a ibu ed o he adial low is ela ed
o he low-pT egion o he spec um, whe e low is ele an .
This ea u e is also e lec ed in an inc ease o he a e age
ans e se momen um pTwi h mul iplici y. In con as o
he yields dN/dy, which e ol e smoo hly as a unc ion o
mul iplici y o di e en collision sys ems, he pTo ligh -
la o had ons as well as K∗(892)0and φ(1020), ises as e
as a unc ion o mul iplici y in pp and p-Pb collisions han
in Pb-Pb collisions, as discussed in Re s. [20,22,23]. The new
measu emen s, wi h he highes mul iplici y each in p-Pb col-
lisions, and compa ison wi h he di e en model p edic ions
can be used o u he ex end hese s udies.
The high-pTpa icle p oduc ion is analyzed wi hin
he amewo k o pe u ba i e Quan um Ch omodynamics
(pQCD) which ea u es a nea ly scale-in a ian beha io o
elemen a y pa on-pa on ha d-sca e ing p ocesses [37,38].
The con olu ion o ha d sca e ing c oss-sec ions wi h he
pa on dis ibu ion unc ions (PDFs) o inciden had ons and
agmen a ion unc ions (FFs) leads o he obse ed scaling
o he inclusi e in a ian c oss-sec ion Ed3σ/dp
3as p−n
Ta
ixed ans e se x,xT=2pT/√s[39,40]. The exponen n
can be ela ed o he sca e ing p ocesses in which high-pT
had ons a e p oduced. I had ons a e p oduced by leading
wis (LT) 2 →2 ha d subp ocesses, hen n ≈4, and o
highe wis (HT) p ocesses, n≈8. I has been obse ed ha
he exponen alue dec eases wi h inc easing collision ene gy,
which sugges s ha he con ibu ion o highe wis p ocesses
on high-pThad on p oduc ion is educed as a unc ion o
ene gy. The ans e se momen um dis ibu ions o di e en
pa icle species a high pTa e obse ed o sa is y a uni e sal
xTscaling o e a wide ene gy ange up o √s=13 TeV. This
scaling beha io was obse ed by he CDF [41–43] and UA1
[44] Collabo a ions in p(p) collisions, and by he STAR [45],
ALICE [46], and CMS [47] Collabo a ions in pp collisions.
In his pape , he xTscaling o K∗(892)0and φ(1020) mesons
a e es ed in p-Pb collisions a LHC ene gies. The ans e se
momen um dis ibu ions o he pa icles in p-Pb collisions
a e compa ed o hose in pp collisions using he nuclea
modi ica ion ac o (RpPb). The measu emen o RpPb ac s as
a con ol expe imen obse able in p-Pb collisions [48]in
he con ex o he obse ed high-pThad on supp ession in
Pb-Pb collisions [15]. In his pape , RpPb measu emen s o
K∗(892)0and φ(1020) in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =5.02 and
8.16 TeV, and ha o and in p-Pb collisions a 5.02
TeV a e epo ed. Simila measu emen s a e also epo ed o
s ange and mul is ange had ons by CMS [49], and o π±,
K±, and p(p) by ALICE [26]inp-Pb collisions a √sNN =
5.02 TeV. A high pT(>8GeV/c), he alues o RpPb o
all ligh had ons a e simila and ound o be consis en wi h
uni y wi hin he unce ain ies. A in e media e pT(2 <pT<
8GeV/c), he alues o RpPb o s ange ba yons (,)show
an enhancemen wi h a clea mass dependence [49]. In his
pT egion, he ha d sca e ing p ocesses s a o domina e o e
so p ocesses and he momen um ange whe e his ansi ion
may happen depend on he mass and qua k composi ion o
he pa icle species. The measu emen s o s ange pa icles
p oduced in high mul iplici y p-Pb collisions [27,50] sug-
ges ed he p esence o adial low [51]. Due o he adial low
e ec , had ons o g ea e mass a e pushed owa ds he highe
ans e se momen um and he e ec inc eases wi h had on
mass as well as mul iplici y [23,51]. Howe e , i should be
no ed ha some inal s a e e ec s such as colo econnec ion
in PYTHIA [52] which can mimic he adial lowlike e ec
and EPOS-LHC [31]which uses pa ame e ized low could
desc ibe he modi ica ion o ans e se momen um spec a.
The di e ence in he p oduc ion mechanism o ba yon and
meson has been obse ed in pa icle a ios [23,51] and he
nuclea modi ica ion ac o s [25,26,45,49,53]. The enhanced
p oduc ion o ba yon (RpPb >1) may happen as a esul o
had oniza ion by pa on ecombina ion [54]. In addi ion, he e
a e se e al ini ial-s a e e ec s such as isospin e ec , C onin
e ec , cold–nuclea ma e ene gy loss and nuclea shadowing
ha can esul in RpPb = 1[55]. The C onin enhancemen
[56] in he in e media e pTa e epo ed in he low-ene gy
expe imen s [57,58]. Simila enhancemen is obse ed o
(an i)p o on compa ed o pion and kaon in p-Pb collisions
a √sNN =5.02 TeV [26]. In his pape , he pa icle species
and collision ene gy dependence o RpPb is s udied o p-Pb
collisions a LHC ene gies.
Th oughou his pape , he esul s o K∗(892)0and
K∗(892)0a e a e aged and deno ed by he symbol K∗0, while
φ(1020) is deno ed by φ. The pape is o ganized as ollows.
In Sec. II, he da ase , e en , and ack selec ion c i e ia;
he analysis echniques; he p ocedu e o ex ac ion o he
yields; and he s udy o he sys ema ic unce ain ies a e b ie ly
discussed. In Sec. III, he esul s on he ans e se momen um
spec a, he dN/dy,pT,xTscaling, and RpPb in p-Pb colli-
sions a √sNN =8.16 TeV a e p esen ed. Finally, he esul s
a e summa ized in Sec. IV.
II. DATA ANALYSIS
The measu emen s o K∗0and φmeson p oduc ion in p-Pb
collisions a √sNN =8.16 TeV ha e been pe o med on da a
collec ed wi h he ALICE de ec o in he yea 2016. The
esonances a e econs uc ed ia hei had onic decay chan-
nels wi h b anching a ios (BR) o 66.6% o K∗0→π±K∓
and 49.2% o φ→K+K−in he apidi y in e al −0.5 <
y<0, whe e ys ands o he apidi y in he nucleon-nucleon
cen e -o -mass. Fo bo h K∗0and φ, he analysis is pe o med
in a ious mul iplici y classes and also using a mul iplici y-
in eg a ed sample.
A. E en selec ion
The de ailed desc ip ion o he ALICE de ec o se up and
i s pe o mance can be ound in Re s. [59,60]. In p-Pb con-
igu a ions, he 208Pb beam ci cula es owa ds he posi i e z
di ec ion in he ALICE labo a o y ame, while he p o on
beam ci cula es in he opposi e di ec ion. Due o he asymme -
ic sys em, he cen e -o -mass ame is shi ed in he apidi y
by y=−0.465 in he di ec ion o he p o on beam wi h
espec o he labo a o y ame. The minimum bias igge
was con igu ed o selec e en s by equi ing a leas a coinci-
dence signal in bo h he V0A and V0C de ec o s [61,62]. The
V0 de ec o sys em consis s o wo a ays o 32 scin illa o

he ull azimu hal angle in he pseudo apidi y egions 2.8 <
η<5.1 (V0A) and −3.7 <η<−1.7 (V0C). The backg ound
e en s due o beam-gas in e ac ion and o he machine-induced
backg ound collisions a e ejec ed using he iming in o ma-
ion om he V0 and he ze o deg ee calo ime e (ZDC) [60].
The p ima y e ex o a collision is de e mined using cha ged
acks econs uc ed in he inne acking sys em (ITS) [63]
and he ime p ojec ion chambe (TPC) [64]. The e en s a e
selec ed whose p ima y e ex posi ion along he beam axis
( z,zis he longi udinal di ec ion) is wi hin ±10 cm om
he nominal in e ac ion poin . Pileup e en s om he igge ed
bunch c ossing a e ejec ed i mul iple collision e ices a e
iden i ied in he silicon pixel de ec o (SPD), which is he
inne mos de ec o o he ITS [60,64]. The o al numbe o
e en s analyzed a e applying he e en selec ion c i e ia is
abou 30 million. The minimum bias e en s a e u he di ided
in o se en mul iplici y classes, acco ding o he o al cha ge
deposi ed in he o wa d V0A de ec o [61]. The yield o
K∗0and φa e measu ed in he apidi y in e al −0.5 <y<0
o he ollowing e en mul iplici y classes, 0–5%, 5–10%,
10–20%, 20–40%, 40–60%, 60–80%, and 80–100%. The pT
spec a no malized o he ac ion o non-single-di ac i e
(NSD) e en s a e also ob ained o bo h K∗0and φ. The mean
cha ged-pa icle mul iplici y (dNch/dη) co esponding o
each mul iplici y class, and measu ed in he pseudo apid-
i y in e al |ηlab|<0.5, is gi en in Table I aken om
Re . [62].
B. T ack selec ion and pa icle iden i ica ion
The cha ged acks coming om he p ima y e ex a e
selec ed in he pseudo apidi y in e al |η|<0.8 wi h pT>
0.15 GeV/c. This ensu es he uni o m accep ance o he
cen al ba el de ec o s. The high quali y acks a e chosen
based on selec ion c i e ia as done p e iously in Re . [23].
The K∗0and φmesons a e econs uc ed om he cha ged
acks which ha e c ossed a leas 70 o a maximum 159
ho izon al segmen s along he ans e se eadou plane o he
TPC. The con amina ion om seconda y pa icles o igina ing
om weak decays and beam backg ound e en s a e educed
by applying a selec ion on he dis ance o closes app oach
o he p ima y e ex in he ans e se plane (DCAxy) and
along he longi udinal di ec ion (DCAz). A pT-dependen
cu o DCAxy(pT)<(0.0105 +0.035p−1.1
T) cm, wi h pTin
GeV/c, is used, which is less han 7 imes i s esolu ion. The
ack DCAzis equi ed o be less han 2 cm [65]. The decay
daugh e s (pions and kaons) o esonances a e iden i ied by
measu ing he speci ic ioniza ion ene gy loss (dE/dx)in he
de ec o gas o he TPC and hei ime-o - ligh in o ma ion
using he TOF [66]. The dE/dx esolu ion o he TPC is
deno ed as σTPC and he cha ged acks a e iden i ied as pions
and kaons i he mean speci ic ene gy loss measu ed by he
TPC is wi hin 6σTPC,3σTPC, and 2σTPC om he expec ed
dE/dx alues in he momen um ange p<0.3 GeV/c,
0.3 <p<0.5 GeV/c, and p>0.5 GeV/c, espec i ely.
In addi ion o he TPC, i he TOF in o ma ion is a ailable,
hen he cha ged acks a e iden i ied by equi ing he ime-
o - ligh alues wi hin 3σTOF o he expec ed alues o he
ull momen um ange.
C. Yield ex ac ion
The K∗0and φ esonances a e econs uc ed om hei de-
cay p oduc s using he in a ian mass echnique. The in a ian
mass dis ibu ions a e ob ained om unlike cha ge πK( o
K∗0) and KK ( o φ) pai s in he same e en . The dis ibu ions
exhibi a signal peak and a la ge combina o ial backg ound
om he unco ela ed πK (KK) pai s. The combina o ial
backg ound is es ima ed using wo me hods, mixed-e en and
like-sign. In he mixed-e en me hod, he acks om one
e en a e pai ed wi h opposi ely cha ged acks om o he
e en s. Each e en is mixed wi h i e o he e en s o educe
he con ibu ion o s a is ical unce ain y om he backg ound
dis ibu ion. The e en s which a e mixed a e selec ed o ha e
simila cha ac e is ics like he longi udinal posi ion o p ima y
e ex ( z) mus di e by less han 1 cm and he mul iplici y
pe cen iles compu ed using he V0A ampli ude mus di e
by less han 5%. The mixed-e en dis ibu ions o K∗0(φ)
a e no malized in he mass egion 1.1 <min <1.15 GeV/c2
(1.04 <min <1.15 GeV/c2) ha is app oxima ely i e σ
away om he mass peak o each pa icle. In he like-sign
me hod, acks o iden ical cha ges om he same e en s a e
pai ed and he in a ian mass dis ibu ion o he unco ela ed
backg ound is ob ained as he geome ic mean 2√n++ ×n−−,
whe e n++ and n−− a e he numbe o posi i e-posi i e and
nega i e-nega i e pai s in each in a ian mass bin, espec-
i ely. The mixed-e en echnique is he de aul me hod used
o he ex ac ion o yield bo h o K∗0and φ, whe eas he
like-sign backg ound is used o he es ima ion o he sys em-
a ic unce ain y. Figu es 1(a) and 1(b) show he in a ian mass
dis ibu ions o π∓K±and K+K−pai s om he same e en s
and he mixed-e en s in he ans e se momen um in e al
1.4 ⩽pT<1.6 and 0.6 ⩽pT<0.8 GeV/c o 0–100% in
p-Pb collisions, espec i ely. The π∓K±and K+K−in a ian
mass dis ibu ions a e mixed-e en backg ound sub ac ion
a e shown in Figs. 1(c) and 1(d), espec i ely, whe e he
cha ac e is ic signal peak is obse ed on op o he esidual
backg ound. The esidual backg ound a ises due o co ela ed
pai s om je s, misiden i ica ion o he decay daugh e s o
esonances and decay o o he pa icles [23]. The aw yields
o esonances a e ex ac ed in each pTbin and mul iplici y

class. The signal peak is i ed wi h a B ei -Wigne and a
Voig ian unc ion (con olu ion o B ei -Wigne and Gaussian
unc ions) o K∗0and φ, espec i ely. A second-o de poly-
nomial unc ion is used o desc ibe he shape o he esidual
backg ound o bo h esonances. The signal peak i is pe -
o med in he ange 0.75 <MKπ<1.15 GeV/c2(0.99 <
MKK <1.07 GeV/c2) o K
∗0(φ). The wid hs o he K∗0and
φa e ixed o hei PDG alues (K∗0)=47.4 ±0.6 MeV/c2,
(φ)=4.26 ±0.04 MeV/c2[67], whe eas he esolu ion
pa ame e o he Voig ian unc ion o φis kep as a ee pa-
ame e . The measu ed esolu ion o he φmass as a unc ion
o pT(σo Gaussian) a ies be ween 1 and 3 MeV/c2.The
sensi i i y o he choice o he i ing ange, he no maliza ion
in e al, he shape o he backg ound unc ion, he wid h and
esolu ion pa ame e s ha e been s udied by a ying he de aul
se ings, as desc ibed in Sec. II D. In minimum bias collisions,
K∗0(φ) p oduc ion is measu ed in he pT ange om 0 o 20
GeV/c(0.4 o16GeV/c). Wi h he a ailable da a samples,
K∗0p oduc ion is measu ed up o pT=15 GeV/c in 0–5%
and 5–10%, up o pT=20 GeV/c in 10–20%, 20–40%, and
40–60%, up o 10 GeV/c in 60–80% and up o 6 GeV/c
in 80–100% mul iplici y classes, while he φp oduc ion is
measu ed up o pT=16 GeV/c in 0–5%, 5–10%, 10–20%,
20–40%, pT=12 GeV/c in 40–60%, pT=10 GeV/cin
60–80%, and pT=6GeV/c in 80–100% mul iplici y class.
The aw ans e se momen um dis ibu ions a e no mal-
ized by he numbe o accep ed e en s and co ec ed o he
b anching a io, de ec o accep ance and econs uc ion e i-
ciency (A× ec) and, signal loss. The co ec ion ac o due o
he e ex econs uc ion e iciency is negligible in all mul i-

simula ion (MC) based on he DPMJET [32] e en gene a o
and he in e ac ion o he gene a ed pa icles passing h ough
he ALICE de ec o geome y is modeled using GEANT3
[68]. I is de ined as he a io o he econs uc ed K∗0(φ) o
he gene a ed K∗0(φ), bo h in he apidi y in e al −0.5 <y<
0, and de e mined as a unc ion o pT. The same ack and pa -
icle iden i ica ion (PID) selec ion c i e ia a e applied o he
decay daugh e o esonances in MC as a e used in he anal-
ysis. The shape o he gene a ed pTdis ibu ions a e di e en
om he measu ed pTdis ibu ions, he e o e a e-weigh ing
p ocedu e is used, in which he gene a ed dis ibu ions a e
weigh ed o ma ch he measu ed dis ibu ions. The e ec o
he eweigh ing p ocedu e on A× ec is ≈2–5% a low pT
(<1GeV/c) and negligible o pT>1GeV/c. The eweigh ed
A× ec is used o co ec he awpTdis ibu ion. No signi i-
can mul iplici y dependence o A× ec is obse ed, he e o e
he aw pTspec a in he a ious mul iplici y classes a e co -
ec ed wi h he minimum bias A× ec alues. The signal loss
co ec ions ha accoun o he loss in K∗0and φyields caused

D. Sys ema ic unce ain ies
The sou ces o sys ema ic unce ain ies o he measu e-
men o K∗0and φp oduc ion a e signal ex ac ion, ack
selec ion c i e ia, pa icle iden i ica ion, global acking e -
iciency, unce ain y in he ma e ial budge o he ALICE
de ec o and he had onic in e ac ion c oss-sec ion in he de-
ec o ma e ial. A simila app oach is adop ed as used o he
sys ema ic unce ain y s udy o K∗0and φin p-Pb collisions
a √sNN =5.02 TeV [23]. No mul iplici y dependence o
he sys ema ic e ec s is obse ed, he e o e he sys ema ic
unce ain ies o minimum bias pTspec a a e p opaga ed o
all mul iplici y e en classes s udied. A summa y o sys em-
a ic unce ain ies o K∗0(φ) in wo ans e se momen um
in e als, 0 <pT<4GeV/c(0.4<pT<4GeV/c) and
4<pT<20 GeV/c(4<pT<16 GeV/c) a e gi en in
Table II. The unce ain ies due o signal ex ac ion include
a ia ions o he signal peak i ing ange, a ia ions o wid h
and mass esolu ion, mixed-e en backg ound no maliza ion
egion, choice o esidual backg ound unc ion, and combina-
o ial backg ound. The i ing ange o he πK (KK) in a ian
mass dis ibu ion is a ied by ≈50 (5) MeV/c2on each side
o he signal peak. The no maliza ion ange o he πK (KK)
in a ian mass dis ibu ions di e ed by app oxima ely 150
(50) MeV/c2wi h espec o he de aul alue. The wid h o
he esonances is ixed o he de aul i whe eas i is kep
ee o sys ema ic s udies. The esidual backg ound is i ed
wi h a i s -o de and hi d-o de polynomial unc ion o he
sys ema ic s udies o he signal ex ac ion. Fo φ esonance,
he e ec o he a ia ion o he esolu ion pa ame e (σo
he Gaussian) on he yield is also included in he sys ema ic
unce ain ies. The combina o ial backg ound om he like-
sign me hod is used o sys ema ic s udies. The con ibu ion o
sys ema ic unce ain ies due o he signal ex ac ion is 7.5–8%
o K∗0and 2.8–4.5% o φ. The sys ema ic e ec s due o
he cha ged ack selec ion a e s udied by a ying he c i e ia
based on he numbe o c ossed eadou ows in he TPC and
he dis ance o closes app oach o he p ima y e ex o he
collision [65]. The ela i e con ibu ion o unce ain ies due o
he ack selec ion a e 2–3% o K∗0and abou 4.4–5.5% o
he φ. Fo he PID sys ema ic unce ain y, he selec ions based
on he TPC dE/dx and TOF ime-o - ligh a e a ied. Th ee
a ia ions a e aken whe e one is a momen um dependen
PID selec ion o 5σTPC (0 <p<0.3), 2.5σTPC (0.3 <p
<0.5), 1.5σTPC (p>0.5) wi h 3σTOF, and wo momen um-
independen selec ion; 2σTPC wi h 3σTOF and 2σTPC only, o
bo h K∗0and φ. This esul s in sys ema ic unce ain ies o
4.3–5% o K∗0and 1.9–3.5% o he φ. The unce ain y
ela ed o global acking a ises om he di e ence in he
ITS-TPC ack ma ching e iciency in da a and MC. I is
es ima ed om he single cha ged ack unce ain y by aking
he linea sum o he unce ain ies o he wo cha ged acks
which a e used o econs uc he esonances. I con ibu es
o he sys ema ic unce ain ies wi h 2–3.2% and 2–2.3% o
K∗0and φ, espec i ely. The ma e ial budge sys ema ic e -
ec s accoun o he unce ain ies in he es ima ion o he
ALICE de ec o ma e ial budge and is es ima ed o be 1.2%
o K∗0and 2.2% o φa low pT. I is negligible a pT
>4GeV/c o bo h K∗0and φ. The sys ema ic unce ain y
due o he had onic in e ac ion c oss-sec ion in he de ec o
ma e ial is es ima ed o be 1.9% o K∗0and 2.4% o φ
a low pT, and negligible o pT>4GeV/c. The e ec s
o ma e ial budge and had onic in e ac ion a e e alua ed by
combining he unce ain ies o he wo cha ged acks (π,K
o K∗0and wo K o φ) acco ding o he kinema ics o he
decay. The sys ema ic unce ain ies o he ma e ial budge
and he had onic in e ac ion c oss-sec ion we e aken om
Re . [23]. The o al sys ema ic unce ain y is aken as he
quad a ic sum o all con ibu ions and a ies as 9.6–10.2%
o K∗0and 6.7–8.3% o φ. The sou ces o sys ema ic un-
ce ain ies ha a e mul iplici y-dependen and unco ela ed
ac oss di e en mul iplici y classes a e also es ima ed. The
sys ema ic unce ain ies due o signal ex ac ion and PID a e
ully unco ela ed, whe eas global acking, ack selec ion
c i e ia, ma e ial budge and had onic c oss-sec ion a e co -
ela ed among e en mul iplici y classes.
III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
A. T ans e se momen um spec a
The measu emen o K∗0(φ) p oduc ion pe o med in he
apidi y in e al −0.5 <y<0up opT=20 (16) GeV/c
in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =8.16 TeV is epo ed. Figu e 2
shows pTspec a o K∗0(le panel) and φ( igh panel)
o NSD e en s. These a e compa ed wi h he p edic ions
om EPOS-LHC [31,69], DPMJET [32], and HIJING [33]
models. The bo om panels o Fig. 2show he a ios o pT
spec a om hese models o he da a. The EPOS Mon e Ca lo
e en gene a o is a had onic in e ac ion pa on model based
on G ibo ’s Reggeon ield heo y o malism which includes
he ea u e o collec i e had oniza ion and he co e-co ona
mechanism om pp o A-A collisions [70–72]. I he s ing
segmen s o he inal s a e pa on ha e high-ene gy densi y,
hen ha egion is known as he “co e,” whe eas he e-
gion wi h s ings o low-ene gy densi y su ounding he co e

is called he “co ona.” The co e e ol es hyd odynamically
and subsequen ly had onizes o o m he bulk o he sys em
whe eas he s ings in he co ona egion b eak h ough he
p oduc ion o qua k-an iqua k pai s, which had onize as ag-
men a ion p ocesses in acuum. EPOS-LHC [31] is a une
o EPOS1.99 [73] ha inco po a es a pa ame iza ion o low
based on LHC da a. The EPOS1.99 model is di e en om
EPOS2.x [74] and EPOS3.x [69] as i does no use he com-
ple e 3D hyd o calcula ion ollowed by he had onic cascade
bu ins ead elies on he as co a ian app oach. I desc ibes
a ious obse ables in minimum bias hea y-ion collisions
as well as small collision sys ems up o a ew GeV/ca
LHC ene gies. DPMJET is a QCD-inspi ed dual pa on model
based on he G ibo -Glaube app oach ha ea s he so
and ha d sca e ing in e ac ion p ocesses di e en ly. HIJING
combines he pe u ba i e QCD p ocess wi h so exci a ion,
he p oduc ion o mul iple minije s, he in e ac ions o je s
in dense had onic ma e , and nuclea shadowing o pa on
dis ibu ion unc ions. Fo he K∗0 esonance, a low pT(<1
GeV/c), DPMJET and HIJING models o e es ima e he da a,
whe eas EPOS-LHC model gi es a good desc ip ion o he
pTspec um. A pT>1GeV/c, DPMJET and EPOS-LHC
unde es ima e and close o he da a, howe e HIJING model
unde es ima es (simila o he DPMJET and EPOS-LHC) o
1<pT<5GeV/c and o e es ima es o pT>5GeV/c.
The EPOS-LHC model desc ibes he φpTspec um ela i ely
be e han he DPMJET and HIJING o all pT. Howe e ,
HIJING model gi es a good desc ip ion o pTdis ibu on
o φ esonance o pT>6GeV/c. The EPOS-LHC model,
whe e a di e en pa ame iza ion o low is in oduced in
small collision sys ems like pp han he la ge olume p o-
duced in hea y-ion collisions, gi es a be e desc ip ion o
he ans e se momen um dis ibu ions o bo h K∗0and
φin p-Pb collisions. Figu e 3shows he √sNN dependence
o he ans e se momen um spec a o K∗0and φ o NSD
e en s in p-Pb collisions. The uppe panels o Fig. 3show a
compa ison o he ans e se momen um spec a o K∗0and φ
a √sNN =5.02 and 8.16 TeV, whe eas he lowe panels show
he a io o he pT-di e en ial yield a √sNN =8.16 o 5.02
TeV and i s compa ison wi h he esul s ob ained om models
[31–33,69]. The unce ain ies o he a ios a e ob ained as he
sum in quad a u e o he unce ain ies o he spec a a he wo
ene gies, which a e la gely unco ela ed. Up o pT1GeV/c,
he di e en ial yield a io seems o independen o pTand
collision ene gy. The alues a e consis en wi h uni y wi hin
unce ain ies. I sugges s ha he pa icle p oduc ion in he
so sca e ing egion is no s ongly dependen on collision
ene gy. The di e en ial yield a ios inc eases as a unc ion
o pT o pT1GeV/c. Simila beha io is also obse ed
in pp collisions in Re . [21]. The pTdi e en ial yield a ios

ob ained om EPOS-LHC, DPMJET, and HIJING a e
consis en wi h he measu emen s wi hin he sys ema ic unce -
ain ies and ep oduce well he ene gy dependence end o
K∗0and φin p-Pb collisions. Figu e 4shows he ans e se
momen um dis ibu ions o K∗0(le panel) and φ( igh panel)
in a ious mul iplici y classes. The a ios o pTspec a in a i-
ous mul iplici y classes o he pTspec um o NSD e en s a e
shown in he bo om panels o Fig. 4.Fo pT4GeV/c, he
slopes o he pTspec a inc ease om low o high mul iplici y
classes, whe eas he spec al shapes a e simila a high pT
o all mul iplici y classes. This indica es ha p ocesses like
adial low, which lead o a change in he shape o he pT
spec a o a ious mul iplici y classes, domina e mainly a
low pT[36]. The inc ease in he slope o pTspec um wi h
mul iplici y is e lec ed in Fig. 5 o pTas a unc ion o
mul iplici y. A simila beha io was also obse ed o K∗0and
φin p-Pb collisions [23]a √sNN =5.02 TeV. The ha dening
o he pTspec a wi h cha ged pa icle mul iplici y was also
epo ed o inclusi e cha ged had on spec a, π,K,p,K
0
S,
,, and in pp collisions a LHC ene gies [20,22,34,75],
whe e di e en models wi h mul ipa on in e ac ions we e
shown o desc ibe hese e ec s.
B. In eg a ed pa icle yield and mean ans e se momen um
The pT-in eg a ed yields and mean ans e se momen um
a e ex ac ed om ans e se momen um spec a in he mea-
su ed ange and using he i unc ion in he unmeasu ed
egion. The φyield is ex apola ed in he unmeasu ed e-
gion (pT<0.4 GeV/c) by i ing a Lé y-Tsallis unc ions
[76] o he measu ed pTspec a in all mul iplici y classes.
The di e ence in he yield con ibu ion a low pTdue o
di e en i ing unc ions (i.e., exponen ial, Bol zmann, mT-
exponen ial, Bose-Eins ein and Bol zmann-Gibbs Blas -Wa e
unc ion in Re . [46]) om he Lé y-Tsallis unc ion is
included in he sys ema ic unce ain ies. The low-pTex apo-
la ion accoun s o 8.9% (14.1%) o he o al yield in he 0–5%
(80–100%) mul iplici y class. The K∗0spec a a e measu ed
om pT=0, so low-pTex apola ion is no needed. The
con ibu ion o he ex apola ed ac ion o he yield is negli-
gible o pT>20 GeV/c(16GeV/c) o K∗0(φ). The alues
o dN/dy and pTo K∗0and φ o a ious mul iplici y
classes a e summa ized in he Table III. The mul iplici y-
scaled in eg a ed yields [(dN/dy)/(dNch/dη|η|<0.5)] o K∗0
and φa e shown in he uppe panels o Fig. 5as a unc ion
o dNch/dη|η|<0.5. These esul s a e compa ed wi h o he
ALICE measu emen s in pp collisions a √s=7 and 13 TeV
[20,22], in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =5.02 TeV [23], and in
Pb-Pb collisions a √sNN =2.76 and 5.02 TeV [15,18,19].
The scaled in eg a ed yields e ol e smoo hly as a unc ion o
mul iplici y om pp,p-Pb o Pb-Pb collisions. Fo simila
dNch/dη|η|<0.5, hese alues a e consis en wi hin unce -
ain ies o di e en colliding sys ems and a a ious LHC
ene gies. This indica es ha e en mul iplici y d i es he es-
onance p oduc ion, i espec i e o he colliding sys ems and
ene gies [20,22,23].
The scaled in eg a ed yields o φshow a sligh inc ease
wi h mul iplici y om pp collisions o mid-cen al Pb-Pb

collisions. The o al inc ease is 12% wi h a 1.5σsigni i-
cance be ween he lowes mul iplici y bin and he highes
mul iplici y bin in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =8.16 TeV. Sim-
ila ly scaled in eg a ed yields o K∗0show a sligh dec ease
wi h mul iplici y o all h ee collision sys ems and he o al
dec ease is 12% wi h a 1.8σsigni icance o p-Pb collisions
a √sNN =8.16 TeV. The signi icance is calcula ed using s a-
is ical and mul iplici y unco ela ed sys ema ic unce ain ies,
added in quad a u e. The in eg a ed yield a ios o esonances
ela i e o hose o longe li ed pa icles, π, K, and pa e
compu ed o s udy hei p oduc ion mechanism. The K∗0/K
(φ/π) a io measu ed in p-Pb collisions a √sNN =5.02
TeV [23] shows a dec easing (inc easing) end going om
he lowes mul iplici y o he highes mul iplici y bin wi h a
signi icance o 2.6σ(1.5σ) which is discussed in he con ex
o a hin o a e-sca e ing (s angeness enhancemen ) e ec .
Fu u e measu emen s o πand K yields in p-Pb collisions
a √sNN =8.16 TeV will be use ul o s udy hese e ec s
a highe cen e -o -mass ene gy and up o la ge mul iplic-
i y. The model compa ison wi h he p-Pb da a shows ha
EPOS-LHC desc ibes he scaled in eg a ed yields o bo h
K∗0and φwhe eas HIJING o e es ima es he da a o all
mul iplici ies. The DPMJET model desc ibes he scaled in-
eg a ed yield o φa highe mul iplici ies bu o e es ima es
he K∗0a all mul iplici ies. The pTexhibi s an inc easing
end as a unc ion o dNch/dη|η|<0.5 o K∗0and φin a ious
colliding sys ems and ene gies as shown in he bo om panels
o Fig 5. The inc ease in pTis as e o pp and p-Pb han
Pb-Pb and o a common mul iplici y co e age he alues
o pTin pp and p-Pb a e la ge han Pb-Pb. A simila
mul iplici y (dNch/dη|η|<0.5≈40), he di e ence in pT
alues among Pb-Pb, p-Pb and pp collisions indica e ha he
geome y and dynamics o he collision sys ems a e di e en ,
while he scaled in eg a ed yields o K∗0and φa e simila
o all colliding sys ems and ene gies. This indica es ha he
high mul iplici y e en sample in small collision sys ems has
a dominan ly la ge ac ion o ha de e en s.
Simila s udies a e epo ed in Re s. [23,77], whe e he
mode a e inc ease o pTin Pb-Pb collisions was e-
la ed o collec i e low. The s ong inc ease o pTwi h
dNch/dη|η|<0.5in small collision sys ems can be u he
in es iga ed by sys ema ic s udies o pT om di e en mod-
els in pp and p-Pb collisions ha inco po a e p ocesses like
colo econnec ion, be ween s ings p oduced in mul ipa on
in e ac ions, di e en s ing agmen a ion p ocesses and he
co e-co ona mechanism. I was obse ed in Re . [22] ha
he PYTHIA8 model wi h colo econnec ion, which in o-
duces a lowlike e ec , and he EPOS-LHC model, which
uses pa ame e ized low, a e able o ep oduce he inc easing
end o pTas a unc ion o mul iplici y o K∗0and φin
pp collisions a √s=13 TeV. The p-Pb measu emen s a e
impo an , as in Re . [77] i is shown ha he pTo cha ged
had ons as a unc ion o mul iplici y shows a simila beha io
as in pp collisions a low mul iplici y, whe eas i seems o
app oach a simila bu less p ominen end o sa u a ion as in
Pb-Pb collisions a high mul iplici y.
The model compa ison wi h p-Pb da a shows ha EPOS-
LHC desc ibes he inc easing end o pTwi h mul iplici y
