The Cu atom displays a distorted octahedral coordination, being linked to four O atoms of two NO3 groups and two N atoms of the aminoquinoline. The different hybridization states of the N atoms produce variations in equatorial Cu-O bond distances, while the apical Cu-O lengths are larger than the equatorial lengths: Cu-Oeq 1.990(2), 2.039(3)A; Cu-Oax 2.488 (3), 2.473 (3) A.

M r = 400.62, monoclinic, C2/c, a = 20.901 (5), b=7.439 (2), c= 18.708 (4) A, fl= 114.59(3) ° , V=2645(2)A 3, Z--8, Dx=2.01 Mg m -a, F(000) = 1592, 2(Mo Ka) = 0.71069 A, p(MoKa) = 2.152 mm -~, room temperature, R = 0.016, R w = 0.021 for 1132 observed reflections. The Cu atom displays a distorted octahedral coordination, being linked to four O atoms of two NO a groups and two N atoms of the aminoquinoline. The different hybridization states of the N atoms produce variations in equatorial Cu-O bond distances, while the apical Cu-O lengths are larger than the equatorial lengths: Cu-Oeq 1.990 (2), 2.039 (3) A; Cu-Oax 2.488 (3), 2.473 (3) A. Introduction. The title compound was synthesized in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, as a first step in attempts to obtain p-NO 3 bridges between Cu 2+ ions. Crystal structure analysis was carried out in order to elucidate the position of the nitro groups and determine the geometry of the complex. Discussion. Final atomic parameters are in Table 1" and selected bond lengths and angles in Table 2. The atom numbering is shown in Fig. 1. The Cu 2+ ion is surrounded by two N atoms of the aminoquinoline group and four O atoms of two nitro groups in a distorted octahedral shape. N(1), N(11), O(14), O(18) are in a roughly equatorial plane [deviations from the mean plane are: Cu 0.041 (3), N(1) -0.141 (4), N(11) 0.118 (4), O(14) 0.111 (4) and O(18) -0.130 (4)A], while O(17) and 0(20) occupy the axial sites [deviations of these atoms from the mean equatorial plane are -1.948(4) and 1.743 (4)A]. The axial * Lists of structure factors, anisotropic thermal parameters and bond lengths and angles in the ligands have been deposited with the British Library Lending Division as Supplementary Publication No. SUP 39748 (8 pp.). The Cu-N(1) bond distance [1.963 (3)A] is similar to those obtained in other compounds [weighted mean of literature values 1.96 (1)A (Palenik, 1964; Hoy & Morris, 1967; Williams & Wallwork, 1967], while it is shorter than the Cu-N(ll) bond distance [2.002 (4)A] due to the sp 2 character of N(1); this produces a lengthening of the Cu-O bond distance opposite to N(1).
