This thesis would not have been written without a set of people sup-
porting me. Clustering them leads to four groups of people I am
deeply thankful.
First of all, I would like to thank my advisors. Prof. Dr. Johannes
Blömer was never too busy to invest time in discussions that inspired
new trains of thought and his guidance always advanced my work.
Prof. Dr. Christian Sohler not only made me eat sushi but also fed
my thoughts with lots of valuable ideas for my research. My col-
leagues Claudia Jahn, Kathrin Bujna, Dr. Stefanie Mense, Dr. Marcel
Ackermann, Jonas Gefele, Peter Günther, Dr. Volker Krummel, Gen-
nadij Liske, David Teusner, Paul Wolf, and of course the IT crowd
(Ulrich Ahlers, Tobias Schultz-Friese, Thomas Thissen, and Michael
Utermöhle) helped me out when I was stuck and provided welcome
excuses from work. I learned a lot during my time with you.
The research presented in this thesis was supported by the Priority
Programme ’Algorithm Engineering’ of the German Research Foun-
dation (DFG), grants BL 314/6-1to BL 314/6-3, for which I am also
really thankful.
I also want to thank my dear colleague Kathrin Bujna, who tamed
R for me and made it draw beautiful pictures.
Last but not least, I want to express my appreciation for the family
and friends cluster. Without Emily and Ronja, I might have finished
more quickly but with less fun. You were the cutest to come into my
office for chocolate! Furthermore, I am very grateful for my parents
and parents-in-law. Their support, love, and prayers were a great
encouragement. My friend Peter Richert never stopped to cheer me
on — thanks for believing in me, mate.
Most of all, I want to thank my wife for accompanying me on my
way, for sharing all the ups and downs, and for giving me unfailing
support. Without you, I would never have succeeded.
