TERMINOLOGY STAFF Antanė KUČINSKAITĖ THIS TAS IŠ TERMINOLOGY WORK LITHUANIAN ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE I. 1945s — MA I started working at the Lithuanian Language Institute of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences at the beginning of 1945 the year. Recently Passed War Front (1944 m. in the summer) had ruined and destroyed a lot in Vilnius. However, Lithuanian language, as well Both Chambers of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore Institutes (Antakalnio 6) remained intact. Only, unfortunately, the employees were scattered and did not hurry to return. The remaining was ir Centre of the Academy of Sciences (Karolis Požela, current Žigimantų, 2, where now Library of Congress). At the beginning of 1945, we started working in the Institute of Lithuanian Language in three: the director, Prof. Juozas Balčikonis, and two of his assistants: Bronė Vosylytė (died in 1946) 1972 and Bronė Balčikonienė (died in 1947). ir Antanas Kučinskas. Before the government had finally approved either the Academy of Sciences centre or the institutes or their staff, we worked as volunteers for a couple of months, and when spring was approaching, we were already recognized as legal employees. (and we got a salary like that). Each year, one new employee contributed, and there was a concern with the printing of the large academic "Dictionary of Lithuanian Language" Volume II. In 1947 I was sent to Kaunas to supervise the printing work in the “Spindulio” printing house. The second volume of the Lithuanian Language Dictionary was published in late 1947. For a couple of years the Lithuanian Language Institute left me in Kaunas and assigned me to the group of leksikografy, determined to immediately publish a one-volume "Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian Language". In 1950, the editorial office of the “Dictionary of the Contemporary Lithuanian Language” was moved to Vilnius, and so I returned. I was tasked with writing the editorial instructions for the large academic Lithuanian language dictionary. 75 2. The first steps of the terminologists in the Lithuanian Language Institute in the 1950 year of the volume organizer Jono The idea of reviving the terminology work was raised at — Kruopos’ initiative The Institute of Lithuanian Language, because more and more often scientists of various specialties were approaching, asking for help in solving the most essential terminology issues. Employees The Lithuanian language institute was small. Terminology gy 1952 m. we made three: professor J. Kruopas, Napalis I'm Greg. ir 3. The Institute’s terminologists cooperate with su lawyers The first practical issues of terminology standardization were solved by lawyers. An experienced jurist with a very good sense of the native language, Professor A. Žiurlys in 1952 turned to the Lithuanian Language Institute, asking for the help of linguists-terminologists. The Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada must urgently issue four codes: the Criminal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Civil Code and the Code of Civil Procedure. A group of distinguished lawyers worked hard to ensure that these four codes were prepared for the press in an exemplary manner, both in terms of professionalism and the culture of the Lithuanian language. A couple of times a week, often more frequently, we, the terminologists of the Institute, together with the lawyers, met for half a day in A. Žiurlio apartment, trying to formulate the provisions of the law in a brief, precise and regular manner, as required by the precision of the language of the codes. Those deliberations have been very useful lessons for me. A. Žiurlio wonderful sense of language, his ability to choose the most appropriate word, the most logical phrase, encouraged me, when creating or improving scientific terms, not to depart from the folk mentality, from the sense of the spirit of the Lithuanian language… When we met with the Law Experts, we had to stop longer at special legal terms. Sometimes syntax or the simplest matters of language correctness also stumbled. For example, I remember that already at the first hearing I was struck by the sentence in the Penal Code: punishable by three years imprisonment Construction 76 “<...> <...>" In my opinion, this is illogical: ir we must first establish the punishmę (deprivation of ir liberty) only then the duration of that sentence. So: <...> punishable by imprisonment for three years <...> The disputed lawyers nevertheless accepted my proposal. Although the formulation I proposed is used consistently in all four codes, in the press today journalists first highlight the duration of ir the bushmeat and only then describe the punishment itself in a formulation ir that is unacceptable to the common language. Perhaps this is influenced by the laconism of the spoken language, cf. : - How much did he get? — Three years. - How did jį they convict you? — For three years. However, the laconism of spoken language often goes beyond the su norms of general language. Ne everything fits in the business language, especially in the lawyers' provisions. From the meetings with the lawyers, the term “deed” proposed by A. Žiurlis remained in my memory. It is an unusual novelty for linguists, although quite regularly composed. Thus, to act: act, as to pull: pull, to nurture: nursing… A. Žiurlys explained that lawyers need to distinguish between two closely related concepts: activity and act. Large-scale actions — will be activity, 0 actions with a more passive expression — action. A. Žiurlys also pointed out that the word liudininkas contradicts the Lithuanian word formation laws. The participants in the hearing agreed that the term of lawyers will be a witness. The cooperation with lawyers, especially during the later discussion of the “Dictionary of Legal Terms”, was a good practice for us, the inexperienced terminologists of the Lithuanian Language Institute. 4. Terminologists’ capacity is increasing, work bars are expanding Head of the Dictionaries Sector J. Having a lot of organizational and administrative work, Kruopas rarely was able to participate in meetings of terminologists with su specialists in scientific fields, therefore į 77 He added the following ir researchers to the Terminology Commission of the Lithuanian Language and Literature du Institute: Vladą Bartusevičių ir Vita Hi. Vladas Bartusevičius, being an athlete himself, was well oriented when the “Sports Terms Dictionary” was being prepared for publication. o V. Labutis soon emerged as a truly talented terminologist. He's together su A. Kučinskaite carefully considered ir good advice given in preparing the press "Physics Dictionary". V. Hello together su A. Kučinskaite 1970 m. discussed the terms ir of the domestic language of cooking. Lists of trade names were reviewed at meetings organized by the Ministry of Commerce. 5.The most important work of the LKI Terminology Commission is the "Dictionary of Medical Terms".The Terminology Commission devoted most of its time and energy to the "Dictionary of Medical Terms". It's big. (almost a thousand pages) For several years, the Terminology Commission together with the authors of this dictionary spent half a day considering each term from the point of view of accuracy, precision and regularity. For several years, Antanas Kučinskas was the most active participant jo in all medical meetings (other members of the Terminology Commission exchanged with each other). In recent years, Vitas Labutis has been distinguished as a talented terminologist. “Part of the manuscript prepared for publication was read by the Lithuanian Language and Literature Institute Research associates of the Terminology Group K. Gaivenis ir J. Klimavičius", — is written in the preface of the "Medical Terms Dictionary". In my opinion, they were the most talented to terminologists of their time. When considering medical terms, first of all, it was necessary to pay sį į more common mistakes in medical language, namely: ne medicines against flu, but against flu; the sore area to ne lubricate, but to lubricate; outcome ne of the disease "Astrauskas V,Biziulevičius S, Pavilonis S, Vaitilavičius A, Vileišis A. Dictionary of Medical Terms. V.: Science, 1980. P. 3. 78 (ucxo0), but end; sick, but sick; pathologoanatomijne a, but pathological anatomy and LL, and LL | ne Unfortunately, such mistakes have not been corrected by the doctors yet... i In the discussion of the terms themselves, it was necessary to deal with unusual cases of word formation. For example, malformations. A baby is born with one eye, in other words, one-eyed, — but it is necessary to name such a phenomenon. The authors of the "Medical Terms Dictionary" proposed the term monocyte. One leg su becomes one-legged, one — arm becomes su one-armed, and so on. — ir Iš at first it seemed unacceptable such terms, but still they are needed by doctors... even breastlessness! Or headless! In the absence of such a statement, the case is not considered to have been settled. There are also very complicated medical Latin terms, such as: encephalomyeloradiculopathy — disease of the brain and spinal cord and nerve roots. It is not possible to find a Lithuanian equivalent for them. In English, the term can only be translated as a descriptive term. Similar “kilometriniy” Latin terms are not rare in medical science. * * We celebrate the memories of the past.
