THE BEGINNING OF THE LITERARY GLOSSARY 1995 m. Baltų lankų publishing house has published the first booklet of the “Dictionary of Literary Terms” prepared by Aleksandr Krasnov, which is dedicated to the concepts of a single genre novel. — The preface — states: „Baltos lankos“ decided to publish the dictionary in thematic notebooks. After publishing a series of notebooks covering the main concepts of literature, it is expected to combine them, supplement them with one book." ir There have been many dictionaries ir of terms in various fields, but we have not yet had a similar dictionary in Lithuanian. (1961 m. J. Russian translatiš ion by Vildžiūnas L. Timofejevo N. "Dictionary of Literary Science Terms" ir 1962 m. Lithuanian — Russian "Dictionary of literary terms", compiled by J. PetroniuV. m, Vanadium ir A. Zalatoriaus). Therefore, the work of the authors of the Lithuanian “Literature Terms nų Dictionary” is certainly ir commendable. The importance of such a ir publication is undoubted. Ji clearly stated in the preamble: “Such a dictionary is needed by Lithuanian higher secondary ir schools, writers, society”. The first booklet of this encyclopedic explanatory dictionary is a small (page 18 only). It consists of the iš following parts: pronouns, vocabulary structure, ir index of Lithuanian terms. The textbook contains 57 the title terms in the alphabetical order of the first letter of the word, explaining ne only the kinds, types, varieties of novels, but such terms ir as epic, epic, epic genres, epic, novel. The explanations are enriched by iš examples of ir novels of world Lithuanian literature. Po most articles are accompanied by a bibliography. But ar wouldn't it have been more appropriate to list the sources used in alphabetical order at the end of the notebook (as it is done in the second volume of the “Literature Terms Dictionary”), even though some publications are repeated. The origin of some terms (epic, epic, epic, intellectual novel) is explained alongside the equivalents in other ir languages (except intellectual novel). The term "romance" is used to refer to a novel written in Spanish, but there is no equivalent in other languages. In addition to the terms verse novel, novel novel are only equivalents in Russian. The novel novels provided examples only ir of Lithuanian literature. 111
iš Aside from the term robbers novel There is only a German equivalent, o and there are no equivalents to the term radio novel. Most of the literature terms in the booklet are Lithuanian. However, there are other English, jų ir German, — French languages. The latter are — presented as title terms reference Lithuanian terms, e.g.: college-novel su universitetinis į romanas | (p. 3), ich— roman | first-person novel (p. 8), kolportageroman T tabloid novel (p. 9), roman a clef | allusions novel (p. 13), Zeitroman time T novel (p. 18). There is no thesaurus of synonyms, jų but there are many, e.g.: artistic novel artist's | novel (p. 2), adventure novel | adventure novel (p. 3), lyrical novel | poetic novel (p. 10), picaresque novel beast | novel (p. 11), novel feuilleton T newspaper novel (p. 15). Terms in the dictionary are intersperseir d. There is one more spelling inaccuracy, e.g.: gothic novel (=gothic novel, but it would be better gothic novel) (p. 7) ir Mr. We suggest the term knightly novel (p. 13) change to term knights novel (zr. DZ, knights of Rome) (plg. in the same dictionary — robbers, beasts novel), the term development novel (p. 18) — the term mature novel. Instead of the term "linear novel", the term "linear novel" would be more appropriate, because it is a species term, and instead of the term "intellectual novel", "intellectual o novel". The dictionary found some proofreading — errors: veiktų (=veikéjy) number (p. Epika) (p. 6), negative (=negative) universality of causal relationships (p. Horror novel) (p. 16). As is known, corrective words and phrases are separated by commas: to explore the world in itself is pointless, „<...> because in a traditional novel the reflection of the world is inevitably distorted by the narrator, i.e. prejudice, beliefs of the perceiving subject (=the narrator, i.e. perceptive subject, prejudice, beliefs) (p. The New Romance) (p. 11). The second booklet of the “Literature Terms Dictionary”, dedicated to poetry, was prepared by 1998 m. Jį prof. J. Girdzijauskas. Pratarmė 112
stated that “the notebook contains close theoretical 600 concepts and terms that characterize the poetry of mainly European poetry”. This booklet was the ir first to be published very beautifully. At the end of the notebook is a list of literature ir abbreviations. However, it is not known why there is no term index. The publication was prepared very carefully, only one proofing error was found: silaboonikos (=silabotonikos) (p. Paroxyton) (p. 41). The terms in the glossary are listed in alphabetical order. The equivalents in English, French, German, Russian, Polish, sometimes Spanish and Italian are given in parentheses. Origin indicated for most terms jų (mostly iš Greek, Latin languages, there are some terms of Arabic origin). Terms are illustrated by examples, there are example schemes. As it is written in the preamble, “the common European (=common European — P. Z.) Interpretation of terms supplemented with Lithuanian poetry data and ir Lithuanian examples”. Most of the terms in the dictionary are international. The terms are confused. However, there are some unconsonants: vowel harmony (=balsiy harmony“ (p. 11), dipirichis (=dipirichis) (p. 16). Some of the explanatory articles have a reference to the terms, but the latter are not in the su dictionary. T, The article contains a short description. pa poem, lyric, poem, poetry; the royal rhyme article has Troilo stanza; The member's article contains period, but the terms poem, lyric, poem, poetry, Troilus strophe, period are not in the dictionary. In this notebook, as in the first ir one, there is a reference to non-Lithuanian heading terms (in English, Latin, French) in su Lithuanian: į brevis brevians | Abbreviation of Jambo (p. 12), cobla | kobla (p. 14), chronos protos T mora (p. 14), enjambement | transfer (p.), rhyme royal royal rhyme | (p. 46), versus anacyclici T anacyclic sequences (p. 61), versus cancrini | anacyclic sequences (p. 61), versus memoriales T mnemotechnical sequences (p. 61), versus politicus T political lines (p. 61), versus recurring | palindromes (p. 61). Perhaps it would be better to abandon the first ones as reference terms, leaving only the o Lithuanian ones, next to which the origin would be indicated: jų (lot. brevis brevians) (p. 31), kobla (provans. Cobla) (p. 33), must (lot. mora delay, — time interval) royal rhyme (p. 39), transfer (pranc. enjambment) (p. 43) 113
(The dictionary has the term anjambeman (p. 8)), (English) rhyme royal) (p. 32), Anacyclic sequences (lot. versus anacyclic, versus cancrini) (p. 5), mnemotechnical sequence (< gr.mneme — memory, techne — science, art) (p. 38), political order gr. (< stichos politikos) (p. 44).Instead of the palindrome, the Lithuanian term return is already used. There are Latin, French heading terms, next to which there are no equivalents (only tų origin of terms): cursus (lot. course) — (p. 14) (is a Lithuanian term kursas (p. 34)), Cursus Planus (lot. plans — smooth, clear, simple) (p. 14), Cursus tardus (lot. tardus — slow, calm) (p. 14), Cursus trispondiacus (lot. trispondiacus — iš trispondiacus) (p. 14), course velox (lot. velox — fast, urgent) (p. 14), numbers (lot.) (p. 40), number (lot. — member, constituent part) (p. 40), vers commun (pranc. simple row) (p. 60), versus correlative (pranc. vers reports) (p. 61), versus quadratus (lot.) (p. 61). There are terms next to which neither the origin nor the equivalents are indicated: versus concordantes (p. 61), versus crescents (p. 61), versus decreasing (p. 61), versus reported (p. 61). The dictionary has many synonyms, e.g.: aid | rhyme aid verse (p. 2), accents (p. 2) ir kirtis (p. 32) Amfibrachis T creticus (p. 5), dibrachis T pirichis (p. 16), Dichorea T ditrochea (p. 16), eupolydion | of eupolydion order (p. 22), falaikininT kas falaikinės eilės (p. 22), graphics T poem graphics (p. 23), heptapodia | heptameter (p. 25), intonaciné-sintaksiné verse | intonaciné-sintaksiné verse (p. 28), cadence rhyme T final rhyme (p. 31), quaterniT um-14 (p. 32), major T major order (p. 35), orchestrated | instrumentation (p. 40), parijambas T pirichis (p. 41), prosody T prosody (p. 45), sextet | sextet (p. 49), Stornello | ritornello (p. 55), versifikacija T poëzija (p. 61), versology T poetry (p. 61) and others. Each letter of the alphabet starting with the heading terms is printed separately in large black font. Couple of terms starting with a letter ¢, shown next to the letter but c, the letter could be ¢ written next to c (zr. the first notebook — cd, gi, mn, št, vz) or even exclude, as done by the letter su u. There are also only two terms that begin with this letter. 114
Therefore, we hope that the editors of the dictionary, combining the į previously published thematic notebooks of ir the “Literatūros terminų žodynas” into one book, will pay attention to the minor inaccuracies į mentioned here. Palmira ZEMLEVIČIŪTĖ 115
