Terminology | 2007 | 14 207 Terminology of Latvian II Congress ANitA ŠčUCKA LMA Terminology Commission, Lu Institute of Latvian Language On 24-25 October 2005, the first Latvian Congress was held in Riga, and 428 papers were plenary session of the Latvian II Congress, the President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, submitted. Two years later, on 29-31 October 2007, the Latvian II Congress was held. At the Juris Ekmanis, emphasized that Latvian occupies a firm place in the science of the 21st century. The greetings of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and the President of the Republic of Latvia Valdis Zatlers were read. The greeting emphasizes that Latvians and Lithuanians are the only surviving Baltic nations and that they are united by related languages and roots. The Presidents expressed the hope that the work carried out will contribute to the study of all Baltic studies. The programme of the II Latvian Congress was divided into several sections (Sources of Latvia: The Latvian Coast, History and Identity, Tradition and Present in Latvian Music, etc.). Terminology issues are discussed in the subsection National terminology and interaction of languages of the section Language and environment, dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of the Liepaja terminologist and interlinguist Ernest Drezen. In the terminology subsection, 11 presentations were read on various topics. Presenter Valentīna Skujiņa (LU Institute of Latvian Language) introduced the life and work of Ernest Drezen and emphasized his main requirements for terminology work – clearly defined concepts, their naming in certain terms. Juris Baldunčiks (Ventspils University of Applied Sciences), Vilma Kalme (Liepaja Pedagogical Academy) and Anita Ščucka (LU Institute of Latvian Language) presented a synchronous and diachronic overview of terminology in linguistics. Linda Piete (Institute of Latvian Language, University of Latvia) spoke about the development of Latvian botanical terminology. Iveta Pūtelė (Institute of Latvian Language, University of Latvia), Māris Baltiņš (Centre for Terminology and Translation) and Juris Gunārs Pommeras (Terminology Commission, Latvian Academy of Sciences) examined the influence of borrowings from other languages on Latvian terminology. Angelė Kaulakienė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) and Aušra Rimkutė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) reviewed the development of Lithuanian computer terminology. The presentation of Regina Kvašytė examined the synonymy of terms in the subjective style. Thus, in the terminology subsection of the II Latvian Congress, the presentations were read by specialists from various scientific institutions and organizations. The exchange of opinions and cooperation is one of the conditions for the successful development of terminology.
