R008 On June 25, 2009, Palmira Zemlevičiūtė, an employee of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on the development of Lithuanian medical terminology in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. The aim of the dissertation is to investigate the composition, scope, semantics, origin and change of medical terms in the late 19th — early 20th centuries by descriptive and comparative methods. It discusses what medical concepts are named by terms, Terms are divided by origin, determined by Lithuanian. the ratio of borrowed and mixed-origin terms. The author of the dissertation also considers the reasons for the non-acquisition of some terms in the current medical language. The thesis consists of introduction, two main parts and conclusions. At the end of it are abbreviations, lists of main sources (383 positions), additional sources (59 positions) and literature (267 positions). The introduction explains the reasons for the choice of the period and the topic, the object of research, the purpose of the work, the tasks and methods, and briefly reviews the research of Lithuanian medical terminology. It introduces some of the terminology concepts used in the dissertation — term, medical term, synonym, variant, nomenclature unit and hybrid. The introduction also contains the defending statements and a list of the author’s published publications on the topic of the dissertation. The first part of “The Origins of Lithuanian Medical Terminology until the Mid-19th Century” consists of two chapters and eight sub-chapters. In the first chapter, Relations of folk medicine terms with scientific medical terminology, the author writes about the role of folk language in Lithuanian terminology. the importance of folk medicine terms for Lithuanian medical terminology and the use of folk language vocabulary in scientific medical terminology. In the second chapter, From medical lexicon in Lithuanian writing up to the middle of the 19th century, the medical lexicon in Lithuanian writing of the 16th-17th and 18th-19th centuries is reviewed. The medical vocabulary in Lithuanian Prussian government orders on health matters is examined in more detail. The second part consists of two chapters and ten sub-chapters. In the first chapter Lithuanian press and medicine are discussed books, booklets and newspapers from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which contain printed materials on health and medical matters. The second chapter examines the semantics and origin of medical terms. According to the meaning, the author distinguished eight semantic groups: body parts and organs and fluids produced by them; diseases and their signs and morbid states; treatment measures; persons; treatment and other facilities and premises; actions, processes; states; characteristics; the names of medical disciplines and related sciences. By origin, medical terms are divided into Lithuanian, borrowed and mixed origin. This section also discusses synonymous and variant expressions of medical terms. Zemlevičiūtė’s dissertation complements the researches on the history of Lithuanian terminology and is useful for Lithuanian medical history researchers, bibliographical work editors and Lithuanian lexicography. The collected medical terms will be able to supplement the Lithuanian language dictionary with new Diana Šilobritaitė words or terminological (medical) meanings of already existing words.
