SOLVITA LABANAUSKIENĖ On June 19, 2015, Asta Mitkevičienė, an employee of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, defended her doctoral dissertation on the subject of Lithuanian literary science terms in the period 1918–1940 (supervisor: Stasys Keinys, Ph.D.). The research object of the thesis consists of about 8000 different terms. The aim of the dissertation is to investigate the origin of terms, systemic semantic relationships, expression (term model), as well as change and competition in the period of independent Lithuania. The terms of Lithuanian literary science are examined by descriptive and comparative method, as well as combining formal and semantic analysis of terms, quantitative relationships of various term groups are determined. The material was collected from various sources of the period under consideration (literature theory, literature history books, books for schools and universities, terms approved by the Terminology Commission, etc.), which is important in order to objectively assess the situation. 209Terminologija | 2015 | 22 A. Mitkevičienė’s work consists of an introduction, four lectures, conclusions, lists of main sources from 1918–1940 (29 items), sources from the 19th century (30 items), sources from 1904–1918 (4 items) and literature in Lithuanian, English, Russian, Italian, French, German (190 items). The introduction indicates the reasons for the choice of the dissertation topic, the novelty and relevance, the purpose of the work, the tasks and methods, presents the research object, briefly reviews the concept and specificity of literary science terms, introduces the main sources of the dissertation. It also contains the defending statements and lists of the author’s published publications and lectures at scientific conferences on the topic of the dissertation. In the first part, the 19th-century terminology is examined in more detail, and literary science terms used in literary texts before the beginning of the investigated period (until 1918) are discussed. The second part presents the activities of the Terminology Commission at the Ministry of Education (1921–1926) related to the terms of literary science, and determines its role in the history of terminology of this science. In the third part of the thesis, the semantic groups of selected six representative literary science terms are analyzed separately. The author examines the origin of single-word terms, synonymy and other systematic semantic (hierarchical, equonymic) relationships of some terms, the origin and types of expression of two-word terms, synonymy of compound terms. to be described in more detail a) the names of literary types and works, genres and other units of classification, b) the names of content elements, c) poetry terms, d) the names of figures and tropes, e) the names of literary periods, directions, currents, movements, schools, f) the names of participants in the literary process. The fourth part of the thesis is dedicated to discussing antonyms. In the sources of terms of the investigated period, there are certain groups of antonym pairs. They consist of basic antonyms of literary science terms and other related antonyms. Terms of this semantic category help to realize systematicness, and they are not directly related to normativization, established usage of terms. Due to their position in the terminology system, the author deliberately discusses them in a separate part of the thesis. During the study it becomes clear that the main issue of the period under consideration is the competition of Lithuanian terms and borrowed terms, as well as synonymy and terminology variation. The research allows to conclude that the current traditional terminology of Lithuanian literature science began to form in 1918-1940. 210 Solvita labanauskienė | Astos Mitkevičienės doctoral dissertation Lithuanian literary science terms 1918–1940 is a well-prepared and well-considered scientific work, which extensively examines one of the essential stages of the development of Lithuanian terminology.
