The first Lithuanian “Chemistry Encyclopedia” comprises more than 3,000 articles describing chemical elements and their compounds, chemical substances, their properties, production and uses, polymers, important medicines and pesticides, chemical reactions, various phenomena of chemical origin, branches of chemistry, and the fundamental laws of chemistry. Alongside the systematic names of chemical compounds approved by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the publication also includes non-systematic names. It is arranged alphabetically. The origins of some terms are explained, and the Latin names of chemical elements are included. Synonyms of terms are provided. Headwords in the encyclopedia are marked for stress. The appendices at the end include “Chronology of the Most Important Works in Chemistry,” “Discoverers of the Chemical Elements and Dates of Discovery,” “Nobel Prize (Chemistry) Laureates 1901–2014,” “Food Additives,” “Pauling Electronegativity Values of Chemical Elements,” and “International Abbreviations of Some Polymers.” The subject index lists headword terms and their synonyms, as well as important terms that are not explained in separate articles but are used in articles on other terms. The translation dictionary presents terms for land forces’ armaments and combat equipment used in the armed forces of Lithuania and other NATO countries. Some of the terms are taken from Lithuanian military dictionaries previously compiled by E. Kisinas and other authors. Abbreviations identifying the source dictionaries are provided alongside these terms. The publication is intended for English translators and teachers, cadets and students at military educational institutions, and officers and sergeants in the national defence system. The dictionary is based more on general lexicographic than terminographic principles and includes adjectives and verbs. It is arranged alphabetically by nested entries. English equivalents and illustrative examples in Lithuanian and English are provided alongside the Lithuanian headwords. Abbreviations indicating the part of speech, military field, or branch of science follow each headword. Irregular English verbs are marked with one asterisk, and prepositions are indicated for many of them. Historicisms and obsolete words are marked with two asterisks. The appendices contain a list of irregularly inflected English verbs and lists of historicisms, obsolete words, and phrases. Lithuanian terms are marked for stress. The publication is richly illustrated. A large part of the book is an entomological terminology dictionary. At its beginning is a list of abbreviations and Latin terms and expressions. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically. Each Lithuanian term is accompanied by a definition (often with a somewhat fuller explanation) and an English equivalent.
