The peculiarities of the expression of these domains and the semantic functions of the main domain are explained, as well as the choice of the participant of different expression, the question of the terminology of names. Names are discussed in separate groups, which are distinguished according to the type (non-active or active) and the form of expression (ordinary or noun) of the dependent elements. The dominant expression type of these chromosomes is Dlvnvk ← Dktvliga, and the subtype is Dlvnvk(ppr) ← Dktvliga. The most characteristic names of the subjective shade – the main focus of the disease usually performs the function of the subject. Most names are not terms because they do not name concepts, their dependent accent denotes a temporal property. KEY WORDS: medicine, two-word compound name, term, main focus, dependent focus, participant, semantic function. ABSTRACT The article analyses two-word composite names with liga as the head element and dependent elements expressed by participles, which were used in the medical texts of the late 19th century – early 20th century written in a popular scithe head element liga and addresses the question of the choice of the entific style (books, booklets, newspaper and calendar articles). It explains the specific features of expression of those elements and the semantic functions of participles of different expression and the attribution of the names under analysis to terms. The names are discussed in the framework of different groups formed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This article continues the analysis of two-word compound names (hereinafter abbreviated

The dominant type of their expression is Dlvnvk ← Dktvliga, and the dominant subtype is Dlvnvk(ppr) ← Dktvliga. The names with the shade of the subject are most widespread: the head element liga usually plays the function of the subject. Most names are not terms, as they do not specify concepts, and their dependent element denotes a temporary quality. KEYWORDS: medicine, two-word composite name, term, head element, dependent element, participle, semantic function. as name) with the main focus on disease. This time we will discuss titles of popular medical literature of the Mojo period – books, booklets, newspapers and calendar articles (see “List of sources”). It should be recalled that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries there were many non-periodical and periodical publications, in which medical and health knowledge was popularly taught not only by doctors, but also by priklausomieji dėmenys reiškiami dalyviais1. Medžiaga surinkta iš kalbarepresentatives of other professions. They lively reacted to the realities of the health situation at the time, i.e. they wrote on such issues as were the most sensitive at the time. One of them is the high morbidity of people. Thus, it is understandable that the topic of diseases was probably the most popular and in demand. Therefore, the names of diseases in those prints are indeed abundant and they are varied both in terms of meaning and expression. The object of study, compared with names with the main element disease and dependent elements expressed by an adjective, is sparse. In these sources, 43 names were found (variants2 are not counted), the dependent elements of which are expressed by participants. The aim of the article is to determine the semantic and expression characteristics of these names. To achieve this, the following tasks are posed: 1) to collect two-word compound names with the main element disease and the adverbs expressed by the participant1 About the two-word compound names from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century with the main element disease and the dependent elements expressed by the adjective, see 2010: 233–257. 2 Variants are names with different graphical forms of the dependent elements, e.g. infekčiama / apkrecziama liga, limpančioji / limpanczioji liga, užkrečiama / użkrečema / użkrečiama liga, užsilenkusi / użsilenkusi liga.

Paabbreviation of the source, year of publication, number (if periodical) and page. Names are written in italics and their dependent elements are marked in bold. In the material, as already mentioned, there are variants, then they are presented after the slash, but only a few cases of variation of such spots have been found. Illustrative sentences in the text are written in smaller font. Quantitative data are presented in the table. Inserted fragments of texts containing the names in question. TWO-LETTER COMPOUND NAME WITH A PRINCIPAL DAMAGES DISEASES WITH DEPENDENT DAMAGES These names (compositions of words) belong to the subtype of descriptive (descriptive) attributive compounds. According to the prevailing semantic characteristics, these are combinations of words of the active description (Bunevičiūtė 1998: 34). The possessor of the attribute (the main object) is represented by an abstract noun, and the dependent object by a participle. The main meaning of such names is attributive, but due to the verb nature of the dependent part, additional subjective and objective shades appear in their depth, which are highlighted by changing the noun construction into a verb (see: LKG III 229; Bunevičiūtė 1998: 34; Bučienė 2007: 20), cf.: kimbama liga and liga kimba, limpama liga and liga limpa (subjective shade), išgydoma liga and išgydo ligą, užsėta liga and užsėdina ligą (objective shade). In such names, the main semantic load falls on the dependent accent (defining component). It distinguishes the significant features of the denotation expressed by the main focus (defining component) (see Пуя 2012: 75).

The first two types of expression are further divided into subtypes, depending on the form of expression of the dependent object, i.e. whether the dependent object is the ordinary or the noun participant (see Table 1). There is one name that has circumstantial relationships between its elements, for example, sleep sickness DMS 1912 85 (a disease that causes sleep, which manifests itself as drowsiness). These names, like the ones discussed earlier, are divided into two types liga, kurių priklausomieji dėmenys reiškiami veikiamosios rūšies dalyviais according to the expression of the dependent element (18 such names were found). There are different names atsikartoti – recurring disease NamG 1907

These compounds represent significant relationships with a shade of subjective meaning (LKG III 229). The research material confirms this statement – the absolute majority of such names are subjective word combinations, i.e. their main focus is the subject disease. Compound names with a primary focus on disease and dependent focuses representing named participants of the target species. This type of names is not typical – two subjective word combinations were found in the researched sources, the main focus of which is the subject disease. League (subject) may:
246 Palmira Zemlevičiūtė end of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th dinimai su pagrindiniu dėmeniu liga ir dalyviu reiškiamais priklausomaisiais dėmenimis century biword compounds pavalipti – lėtinė liga KD 1895 32, Svk 1910 4 1, LietK 1917 69 / limpanan czioji liga LAK 1885 52, V 1899 12 184 (liga limpa), užsisenėti – użsisenėjusi liga DMS 1912 49 / užsisenėjusi liga SK 1901 3 (the disease has become obsolete). Summarizing what has been said in the first and second sections of the article, it can be said that the names prevail in which the main focus of the disease performs the function of the subject. The disease can perform an infinite number of different actions – infect, repeat, invade, become rooted, take root, spread, stick, destroy, (not) climb, (not) infect, block, (weaken), finish, become obsolete, remember, attack, become inflamed, get old, but most often the disease can spread, climb, infect. Names in which the main focus of the disease performs the function of an object, it can be said, uncharacteristic. The disease can be cured, (not) cured, counted, allowed, filled. Rare cases where circumstantial (causal) relationships are formed between the name elements. 3. Two-word compound names with the main element disease, the dependent elements of which are expressed by the subordinate members of the suffix -tin of necessity A separate type consists of names, the dependent elements of which are expressed by the subordinate members of the suffix -tin of necessity (see table 1). The participants of the necessity usually indicate the characteristics arising from the action to be performed, but there are also derivatives of the aforementioned adverb that do not have the meaning of the action to be performed, they simply indicate characteristics related to the often performed, continuous or possible action (LKG II 347). The objective is to achieve a high level of quality, usually with a high level of quality control (CQC). Three names could be included in this category, e.g.: fatal disease Svk 1914 3 10, abhorrent disease DMS 1912 31, horrible disease DMS disease in terms of the choice of the 1912 34. 4. Dvižodžių sudėtinių pavadinimų su pagrindiniu participant of different expression, going through the dependent domain This section discusses cases where the dependent elements of the names compete with each other, represented by the participants of the active and non-active species, e.g.: exuding disease and exuding disease, climbing disease and climbing disease, limping disease and limping disease, non-limping disease and non-limping disease, and
247Terminology | 2021 | 28 with the participants of the simple and noun forms, e.g.: exuding disease and exuding disease, lymphatic disease and lymphatic disease, lymphatic disease and lymphatic disease, non-lymphatic disease and non-lymphatic disease, infectious disease and infectious disease. As can be seen from the examples presented, the expression of the dependent elements of the names of infectious diseases varied in the most frequently studied sources. Why did the authors of the texts choose to use participants of different expressions, even though the concept was the same? There are several reasons why this question is not worth raising. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the most important objective of the authors of popularised medical and health writings was educational – to convey subject knowledge. The authors, apparently, did not deliberately choose which participant to use. Most of the time they wrote as they could, maybe even looking at the texts of other authors. One thing that was particularly important to them was to write in a language understandable to the ordinary reader, i.e. in Lithuanian, and they hardly cared about linguistic subtleties. The authors most likely chose the participle of the active or passive kind, the simple or noun form spontaneously. This is evidenced, for example, by the fact that even in one publication the same author used participants of different expression when writing about the same disease (see figures 1, 2 and 3). Figure 1. Fragment with the names of infectious diseases limpamos ligos, limpamosios ligos (Kol 1915 3) Fig. 2. Fragments with the names of infectious diseases infectious disease, infectious disease (Art 1910 19 69) Figure 3. Fragments with the names of infectious diseases lėtinė liga, limpanti liga (LietK 1917 69, 70) Thus, at least some consistency or tendency here would be difficult to see. On the other hand, there are not many cases of such use by competing participants in the study material.

TWO-WORD COMpOSITE NAMES OF LATE 19Th – EARLY 20Th CENTuRY WITh liga AS hEAD ELEMENT AND DEpENDENT ELEMENTS ExpRESSED bY pARTICIpLES Summary The article analyses two-word composite names with liga as the head element and dependent elements expressed by participles, which were used in the medical texts of the late 19th century – early 20th century written in a popular scientific style (books, booklets, newspaper and calendar articles). It was found that the dependent elements of those names are expressed by passive and active participles, as well as the adjectivized participles of necessity with the suffix -tinas, but the latter form of expression is not very common. The participles of both types are expressed by simple and pronominal forms. Dependent elements expressed by simple passive or active participles prevail.
255Terminology | 2021 | 28 Three types of expression of dependent elements were singled out: Dlvnvk ← Dktvliga, Dlvvk ← Dktvliga, Dlvrk ← Dktvliga. The dominant type is Dlvnvk ← Dktvliga. Four subtypes of expression were distinguished within the first two types: Dlvnvk(ppr) ← Dktvliga, Dlvnvk(įvardž) ← Dktvliga, Dlvvk(ppr) ← Dktvliga, Dlvnvk(įvardž) ← Dktvliga. The dominant subtype is Dlvnvk(ppr) ← Dktvliga. It was ascertained that the head element liga plays three semantic – subject, object and adverbial modifier – functions. The word phrases with the shade of the subject prevail. In other words, the head element liga usually plays the function of the subject, i.e., it takes an active position. After we transform the noun constructions under analysis into verbal ones, we can see that liga is used in combination with twenty intransitive verbs; climb and infect are most common. Cases where the abovementioned element plays the function of the object or adverbial modifier are individual only. The analysis of the names with the participles of different expression (active and passive voice, simple and pronominal form) as their dependent elements presupposes that the authors of the texts in question chose specific participles spontaneously rather than consciously; they usually wrote as they knew or saw in the texts of other authors. Their principal aim was to render subject-specific knowledge to an ordinary reader in the understandable language or, in other words, they were more preoccupied with the content rather than form related linguistic subtleties. As regards the attribution of names to terms, two groups of names stand out. The names of the first group can be considered proper terms, as they denote medical concepts and their dependent element expresses a distinctive specific quality. The phrases with the dependent elements expressed by active participles used in the medical texts of the period under analysis can be attributed to terms as well. The terms comprising the second group are improper terms; they have no connection with the medical concept, whereas their dependent element denotes a temporary quality, which is only relevant in a specific text.
