Jablonski was usually associated with standardization, so I have heard from critics that these are internal conferences devoted to a narrow subject of language, which can hardly reach an international level. However, the organizers of the conferences have proved that those who evaluate Jablonskis in this way do not know all his activities, his efforts devoted to Lithuanian science, language and social life. For example, the historian Eligijus Raila considers Jon Basanavičius, Vincas Kudirka and Jonas Jablonskis as the main creators of the ideology of modern Lithuanianness and the pillars of modern Lithuanianness, only the latter’s social and political activities have been discussed in passing (see Grigaravičius 2021). This gap has been filled by Algirdas Grigaravičius’ book “Jonas Jablonskis in Politics and Society” (2022). Undoubtedly, Jablonskis is associated with the beginning of Lithuanian pedagogy and its theoretical justification. He participated in the competition committees that dealt with the issue of the quality of Lithuanian textbooks, raised the issue of textbooks in the press, wrote their reviews. Jablonskis prepared the first official Lithuanian language program for primary school. Of course, Jablonskis is known even outside Lithuania as the creator of the Lithuanian language, its standardizer, its promoter, and its scholar. International Scientific Conference on the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of the Linguist “Jonas Jablonskis and the Centenary of the Common Lithuanian Language” covered many aspects of Jablonskis’s activities, so today this outstanding personality is viewed much more broadly, so the conferences named after him have become interdisciplinary, interesting not only for linguists. Before reviewing the specific conferences, it is necessary to say that this is a joint initiative of Vilnius University and the Lithuanian Language Institute. Initially, the conferences were organized jointly, later, when they grew into international, for the general public. Except for the 4th, all conferences were held either at Vilnius University or at the Lithuanian Language Institute and at about the same time: September, October, November.
1993 Jon Jablonskis conference “The category of the link and the use of the link” As Rita Miliūnaitė wrote in the Chronicle section of the first issue of „Gimtoji kalba“ in 1994, „[B]ecause of the joint efforts of the linguists of the Department of Lithuanian Language of Vilnius University and the Institute of Lithuanian Language, a conference by Jon Jablonskis entitled „The Category of the Verb and the Use of Verbs“ took place on October 11 at the Faculty of Philology of the University. This was planned a few years ago and was carefully prepared. It was considered what direction to choose for this event – probably one-off, how it should differ from other similar occasionally organized and probably becoming traditional conferences of Bogdan, Balčikonis, Kazlauskas and others” (Miliūnaitė 1994). The first Jablonski conference tried to harmonize grammar theory and practice, so the conference papers (13 were read) are divided into two parts. In the first part, A. Valeckienė spoke about primary and secondary functions of verbs, V. Labutis – about the asymmetry of verb forms with functions and semantic roles, A. Paulauskienė – about the exclamator as a member of the verb paradigm, J. Šukys – about the generative of negation and purpose in Donelaičio “Metai”, S. Valentas – about the category of verb in poetry, A. Vidžiūnas – about J. Jablonski’s attitude to various fluctuations of morphological forms, evaluation of similarities. In the second part of the conference, the participants listened to the presentation of P. Kniūkšta “More Special Forms of Foreign Words”, L. Grumadienė spoke about the use of adverbs in Punsko dialect, E. Valiulytė compared the use of pro and per constructions with the finalis and their relationship with the norm, and the Englishist I. Šeškauskienė compared the semantics of some English and Lithuanian adverbs. The conference was held on November 11, 1994, 20 papers were read, speakers came from Šiauliai and Kaunas (Vileikienė 1995). At the general meeting were read reports “Regarding the functions of grammatical norm” (V. Labutis), “Specificities of language culture teaching in technical profile higher education” (L. Barzdžiukienė), “What we gain and what we lose by norming language” (P. Kniūkšta), “Linguistic market” (L. Grumadienė), with the new work of the Language Culture Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute – language management information base – introduced J. Vileikienė. Two presentations were devoted to language culture abroad. These are E. Jakaitienė’s presentation “Problems of general language education in Norway” and L. Laužaitė’s “Supervision of the Danish general language”. The work was continued by two sections dedicated to practical aspects of the norm. Analysis of the allocation and expression of undefined quantity and totality (J. Švambarytė), the relationship of the constructions forget what and about what with the norm (E. Valiulytė), the influence of language contacts on the subjective style (R. Kvašytė), the use of space prepositions and their meanings in Lithuanian and English languages (I. Šeškauskienė), the names of goods and dishes in menus (A. Kupčinskaitė), the use of the verb add (D. Vainauskienė), errors of participle use in diploma thesis (V. Žilienė), errors of prepositions in technical language (V. Celiešienė). V. Garliauskas talked about the standardization and usage of local names in Suginčiai parish, V. Rimša – about the imaginary common Baltic language, A. Malakauskas – about the similarities of pronunciation in the third edition of DLKŽ, V. Vitkauskas discussed systematic issues of pronunciation, A. Vidžiūnas – about the standards of pronunciation of adverbial nouns. 1995 Jon Jablonskis Conference “Practice and Methodology of Implementation of Language Culture” The idea is consistently developed that language phenomena cannot be measured with one measure. Kniūkšta stated: “In the work on language culture, it is necessary to distinguish between the real (big) errors of the language system and codification. It is not fitting to commit mortal sins from the latter, much less to despise and insult the users of the language
because of them, as is often done” (KTTS 1995: 5). It was also discussed that in order to improve the state of the Lithuanian language, research is needed on what the language is like at the time of discussion, what determines the quality of the language (V. Labutis). Issues of meaning loanwords selection (D. Mikulėnienė), language consultation (A. Kupčinskaitė), computerization of office language data (D. Vainauskienė), implementation of language culture in Lithuanian television (I. Smetonienė), spelling of foreign names (M. Tamošiūnas) were touched. L. Grumadienė presented the English code theory, which can be applied to the Lithuanian language, J. Švambarytė proposed to look at language culture as a fashion and shape it. The attitude of the public towards linguists is an interesting and relevant topic for norm-setters (R. Miliūnaitė, L. Vaicekauskienė). A lot of attention was also paid to the teaching of the specialty language in higher schools (J. Pabrėža, Z. Alaunienė, L. Barzdžiukienė, V. Žulienė and R. Žukienė, E. Molytė, V. Liolienė, L. Pečkuvienė and V. Žilinskienė). 1996 Jono Jablonskio conference “The border of language culture and stylistics” On October 4, the 4th conference of Jono Jablonskio was held at the Rygiškių Jono Gymnasium in Marijampolė. This time the theme was “On the Border of Language Culture and Stylistics” and the conference was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the birth of J. Pikčilingis (RE 1997). The presentations were read by specialists in language culture and stylistics from higher education institutions and the Lithuanian Language Institute: K. Župerka, R. Koženiauskienė, R. Marcinkevičienė, J. Šukys, J. Barauskaitė, G. Čepaitienė, N. Linkevičienė, V. Labutis, A. Drukteinis, L. Grumadienė, A. Kupčinskaitė, P. Kniūkšta, R. Vladarskienė, V. Žilinskienė, A. Šiupienienė, language administrator of Vilnius city, and I. Smetonienė, linguist of LTV. The conference examined the problems of contemporary language, the interaction of style and culture, the relevance of language norms: the concept of style culture in the works of J. Pikčilingis (K. Župerka), the criteria for distinguishing language and style errors (A. Drukteinis), the relationship of rhetorical elocution with language culture and stylistics (R. Koženiauskienė), euphemism (R. Marcinkevičienė) and others. As Ramunė Vaskelaitė writes in the 70th issue of the journal “Language Culture”, “a large number of linguists and editors from the old university, other higher education institutions, the Lithuanian Language Institute, the Language Commission and the Language Inspection gathered in the Kazimieras Bogdas auditorium of Vilnius University to discuss the issue.” (Vaskelaitė 1997: 32) The theme chosen by the conference organizers is “Language culture: tradition and present”. Not all the presentations were focused on the intersection or opposition of tradition and the present, ideas were also shared on the subjects of teaching and supervision of language culture, and in the discussions after each presentation the issues of tradition and innovation constantly crossed (Vaskelaitė 1997). It has been said that there are many foreign words in Lithuanian language, but clear criteria for norming foreign words have not yet been formulated, so it is difficult to talk about their regulation, even the term foreignness itself is treated differently in various language norming publications (J. Girčienė). It was emphasized that a new approach is needed not only to foreign words, but also to the spoken language, there is a lack of research on the latter, textbooks and an attitude to this language variant in general (L. Vaicekauskienė). A. Ryklienės presentation was devoted mainly to the linguistic positiveness of textbooks, i.e. to the authenticity of the language data accumulated in them, which is so lacking in normative works of Lithuanian language practice, so their examples are correct, but unnatural, perhaps for this reason unacceptable to users. More specific language issues were also discussed at the conference. J. Švambarytė talked about the expansion of the meanings of international words, R. Vladarskienė – about the syntactic expression of accuracy in the language of state documents, A. Paulauskienė – about the category of denotation. Mr. Kniūkšta discussed the trends and shifts in the use of the words „national“ and „national“, „state“ and „state“. D. Mikulėnienė, Vice-Chair of the Language Commission, introduced the work and activities of the Commission, E. Mikulėnaitė,
representative of the Language Inspection, reviewed the mistakes made by television journalists. There was also talk about the specialty language course in colleges and higher schools – its importance and problems (V. Labutis, Z. Alaunienė, E. Molytė). 1998 Jon Jablonskis conference “New language phenomena and their evaluation” The tradition of holding conferences in early October is discontinued. This time there were 19 different presentations and interesting discussions. “Ideas were shared by linguists with extensive scientific experience, doctoral students, assistants and people concerned with language affairs” (Vileikienė 1998: 95). The speakers raised the following questions: how to raise the prestige of the language, what to do so that Lithuanian language is not understood as a second-class language, how to plan the change of the common language, how to understand the ecology of the language (D. Mikulėnienė), how to maintain the balance so that the natural tendency of language development is not violated by too strongly stopping the emergence of new things in the language (R. Miliūnaitė). The latter introduced rational and logical stages of standardization of language innovations, which are still relevant today: recording, monitoring and establishing links with similar phenomena; formulation of the problem; the decision whether to leave the phenomenon to natural selection or to try to influence its functioning; a recommendation, if codification cannot be carried out immediately, or an explicit positive or negative codification; implementation of the proposal in the user interface. “Sometimes it is necessary to advise and recommend more, not just correct,” said V. Labutis, speaking about problems when it is necessary to explain minor violations of norms. Discussions were held on terminology, foreign words and their equivalents, unchangeable words in Lithuanian language (J. Girčienė, L. Vaicekauskienė, A. Ryklienė), textbooks and automated searches in them (J. Mikelionienė), advertising language (I. Smetonienė), punctuation in poetic language (J. Abaravičius), formal and syntactic structure of documents (R. Vladarskienė), the use of the iliatives in journalism (R. Vaskelaitė). 1999 Jon Jablonskis conference “Change and use of norms” The conference included 15 presentations and a number of problematic issues were discussed. A lot of discussions were triggered by the report of the Chairperson of the Language Commission D. Mikulėnienė “Public language: norm and use”, which raised the problem of teaching pronunciation, discussed what is generally correct language, and whether correct language may not be entirely correct (Vileikienė 2000b). The conference also talked about the “Dictionary of the Common Lithuanian Language” and the problems of language standardization (variants should not be supported or rejected based on the native dialect of the linguist or other tendencies of individual usage, standards should be determined objectively, after careful examination of real usage), the significance of the dictionary and its attractive form – the electronic version (G. Naktinienė, D. Murmulaitytė). The peculiar expression of electronic language was examined, this language is very uneven both in terms of style and norm, necessary decisions, how it will be evaluated, how it is normized (A. Ryklienė). The flexibility of standardization, the possibility of variants, the principles of evaluation of language phenomena in „Language Advisor“ were discussed in R. Miliūnaitė’s report „Degrees of evaluation of language phenomena in „Language Advisor“. In his presentation, V. Labutis raised the question of what is the current language, how we should perceive it and whether everything found in texts written in Lithuanian really belongs to the Lithuanian language. Another syntax specialist J. Šukys said that the use of noun communication is disappearing, and language controllers, correctors and teachers should help to preserve it. As usual, some of the papers were devoted to specific cases of usage: the denotation of a state with a noun (P. Kniūkšta), the use of prepositions in usage with a suffix (V. M. Knabikaitė), the use of a pronoun with nouns (R. Vaskelaitė), the language of legal documents (D. Černiauskienė), the correct pronunciation in teaching professional language (V. Žilinskienė, D. Vainauskienė), the standardization of foreign words (J. Girčienė), the standardization of terms (S. Zajankauskas), the meaning and usage of quotation marks. (J. Abaravičius).
2000 Jon Jablonskis conference “Comparison of language norms and usage” In the review prepared by Janina Vileikiene for the “News” section of “Gimtoji kalba”, it is written: “Continuing the discussion of last year’s conference on common spoken language, senior research associate Rita Miliūnaitė of the Language Culture Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute described common spoken language in terms of various phenomena that function in it – foreign words, dialects, jargons, etc. The current common spoken language is very heterogeneous compared to the written language, and it has recently become more and more close to the so-called street language. Language specialists’ recommendations are more followed in written language, but they cannot always be applied to spoken language. It is necessary to encourage the users of the common language to seek their own means of expression of the common spoken language” (Vileikienė 2000a: 15). The conference also discussed the specificity of style norms (K. Župerka), variants of stylistic terms (V. M. Knabikaitė), deviations of advertising language from the norm (D. Blažinskaitė), foreignness in sentence and written usage (J. Girčienė, A. Ryklienė), reasons for dialectal language diversification (L. Grumadienė), issues of semantic construction and value (A. Kaulakienė), names of the inhabitants of states (D. Liutkevičienė), collisions of phonetic theory and practice (R. Petkevičienė), curses in youth language (R. Apanavičius). Issues of the “Common Lithuanian Language Dictionary” were raised: what criteria should be used for selecting words, how should the scientific vocabulary be presented (G. Naktinienė and D. Svetikienė, L. Puzinienė). Several reports are devoted to the practice of language norms: the use of localis to indicate the field of activity (P. Kniūkšta), the combination of homonymous factors and dialect in documents (R. Vladarskienė), the use of functional synonyms (J. Vaskelienė). 2001 Jonas Jablonskis conference “Language Use and Management” In her keynote speech, R. Koženiauskienė spoke about elite language. The speaker emphasized that the normative aspect is not sufficient for elite language, it requires communicative and ethical aspects. The report lists the characteristics of elite language and concludes that its future depends on the attitude and responsibility of the media. Other reports discussed the actual use of common language, the breaking of norms, the erosion of the boundary between private and public language (L. Grumadienė, J. Girčienė, A. Ryklienė). Mr. Kniūkšta pointed out that language arrangements are becoming more and more administrative, squeezed into frames and bureaucratized, but from another report it becomes clear that the simple language arrangements are also not without shortcomings (E. Rimkutė). R. Miliūnaitė informed how the usage tendency will be shown in the “Language Practice Tips”, and explained what is the norm in general. Several reports showed that there are uncodified language phenomena related to foreign influences: pertarai (G. Akelaitis), acronyms (R. Marcinkevičienė), foreign words (V. Zubaitienė). Among other language phenomena, attributively used adjectives (L. Vaičiulytė-Semėnienė) and the concept of style order in J. Pikčilingio’s “Lithuanian language stylistics” (V. Knabikaitė) were discussed. As Ramunė Vaskelaitė summed up the conference, “new areas and variants of usage, new phenomena not only activate the work of language management, but also force us to rethink the concept of norm and common language, to redefine the boundaries of normative language” (Vaskelaitė 2001: 113). It is also important that the participants in the conference expressed concern about the translation of European Union documents and decided to publish an appeal to the authorities and the public. The petition proposes to involve qualified language specialists in the drafting and translation of documents, since current documents are not always in normative language, which affects public usage. It must be acknowledged that the demands of linguists were heard after some time and language editors began to work in the institutions of the European Union. 2002 Jon Jablonskis conference “Boundaries of the Common Language” Traditionally, overview and problematic reports were read. Some of them covered theoretical questions, others specific assessments of language phenomena, thirds language management matters,
fourth language users' preferences. The reports of the introductory session (V. Labutis, J. Klimavičius) are devoted to the understanding of the common language and its boundaries, the report of L. Grumadiene raises the idea of changing language policy, how it will be affected by future membership in the European Union. Later reports raise more problems and questions: the origin and development trends of Lithuanian common language pronunciation (R. Petkevičienė), the relationship between common language norms and functional styles (K. Župerka), parallels between Lithuanian and Latvian stylistics (R. Kvašytė), the necessity of text typology (A. Bitinienė), language pluralism in the electronic medium (A. Ryklienė), the realities of accepting or rejecting borrowings (J. Girčienė), the legalization of the preposition above in common language (P. Kniūkšta), the penetration of the iliative from administrative language into other official styles (R. Vladarskienė), metaphors and occasional constructs in advertising texts (I. Smetonienė), the expression of the relationship between the addressee and the recipient in one of Father Stanislovo sermons (G. Čepaitienė). The functioning of language in society was also discussed. R. Miliūnaitė emphasized that the evaluation of language phenomena is not only twofold – either norm or error – the limits of norm and error are not always easily defined, so it is important for normers to clearly distinguish norm from error and to evaluate intermediate variants more flexibly. E. Zaikauskas drew attention to the permeation of jargon and its existence alongside common language, R. Koženiauskienė – to the use of such words as authority, fame, fame, knowledge, etc. in a distorted meaning, G. Akelaitis discussed the concept of language fashion, D. Smalinskas and D. In the reports of Mrs Kanišauskaitė. 2003 Jono Jablonskio conference “Common Lithuanian language and borrowed words” Already at the very beginning of the conference attention was drawn to the fact that the terms borrowing, foreignness, foreign word may not be quite clear, and it was requested to use them more responsibly and to define them more specifically (Rudzevičius 2003). It is suggested that the List of New Non-Useful Aliens approved in 1997 is not so perfect, rather problematic. Debt rating, selection, evaluation criteria and their application in recommendations, debt rating principles were discussed (R. Miliūnaitė, D. Mikulėnienė, L. Vaicekauskienė, R. Urnėžiūtė). L. Grumadienė showed the nature of the borrowing of Lithuanian language in the context of world languages, from the presentations it became clear that not only borrowings are spreading, but also common international words are used with meanings not typical for us (J. Klimavičius, R. Vladarskienė, P. Kniūkšta), musical directions are even named in scientific works with foreign words (V. Černiutė), there is delay in abandoning borrowings in dictionaries (A. Malakauskas), especially noticeable competition between borrowings and their equivalents in oratory language (J. Girčienė). The conference presented many concrete examples of the use of foreign words and discussed what their possible equivalents are. As P. Kniūkšta emphasized in his introductory speech, modernization is understood very broadly, it includes not only the formation of new words, but also new language phenomena, new language processes and tendencies in general (Blažinskaitė 2004: 201). The conference reports discussed the cognitive model of the reasons for lexical borrowing (L. Vaicekauskienė), the methods of creation of new words and the purpose of their use (J. Girčienė, P. Rudzevičius), the re-creation of terms (J. Klimavičius), the writing of food product names (P. Kniūkšta). R. Vladarskienė drew attention to the influence of the language of European Union documents on the Lithuanian administrative language: international words, cumbersome names, noun constructions have increased, obscuring the verb expression characteristic of the Lithuanian language. R. Koženiauskienė examined the necessary limitation of rhetorical ornaments in subjective texts, D. Blažinskaitė – the use of terminological and stylistic innovations in advertising, I. Smetonienė – the stylistic separation of advertising. R. Miliūnaitė’s report examines text pressure as a prerequisite for the emergence of new
linguistic tendencies. In her presentation, A. Ryklienė dealt with contextual abbreviations in electronic language, E. Bondzinskienė – with journalists’ incorrect spelling. In 2005, the conference of Jon Jablonski “Common Language and Society” became international for the first time. 18 presentations were read, 7 of them by guests from abroad (Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia). The topic of the conference was broad, covering both language policy and language planning issues, as well as in-depth studies of usage or speakers’ attitudes, so “it allowed not only to raise and discuss problems of interest to Lithuanian linguists, but also to share experience and discuss with scholars from other, especially neighboring, countries” (Blažinskaitė 2005: 275). In addition to Lithuanian language policy in a changing society, new versions of the Language Act are being prepared (I. Smetonienė), the conference participants were introduced to Norwegian language policy and language standardization (R. V. Fjeld), Swedish language policy (B. Lindgren), public attitude to standardization in Italy (S. M. Lanza), consultations provided by the Estonian Language Institute (S. Mäearu), Estonian anthroponymy and toponymy management (P. Päll), a new type of Estonian language dictionary (T. Leemets and M. Raadik), stylistically marked Latvian and Russian verbs (S. Polkovnikova) and an experiment with the unique world view of trilinguals (M. Zavjalova). Current issues of the Lithuanian language were also discussed: the relationship of public notices with other variations of notices (P. Kniūkšta), the relationship of codification and usage in the current Lithuanian language (R. Miliūnaitė), how consumers understand the concept of common language and how they evaluate the language itself (L. Grumadienė, M. Ramonienė), the influence of English on television advertisements (L. Vaicekauskienė), children’s language (L. Kamandulytė, I. Savickienė) and even the use of quotes (R. Marcinkevičienė). L. Muriniene’s presentation was dedicated to language consultations, more precisely to the VLKK electronic consultation bank. 2006 Jon Jablonskis Conference “Common Language and Other Language Variations” The subjects of the conference covered a fairly wide spectrum: from the origins of the common language to the present, the common language and dialects were discussed, the functional spread of the common language (Rudzevičius 2006: 291). Z. Zinkevičius presented a fairly detailed history of the written and spoken Lithuanian common language, it was stated that the origins of the common language should be sought in the middle of the 13th century, in the time of King Mindaugas, P. V. Subačius examined the polytext of „Anykščių šilelio“, V. Zubaitienė – how much and what semantic information about Lithuanian words is contained in old dictionaries. R. Koženiauskienė pointed out that the concept of language culture has a broader meaning, teaching language culture should not be confined to theoretical considerations. The relationship between common language and dialect (the case of Joniškėlis) (M. Ramonienė), Kazlų Rūda dialect (A. Pupkis), dialect and common language conflict (I. Balčiūnienė), quasi-standard problem (D. Aliūkaitė) were discussed, the topic was supplemented by A. Gritėnienė's report on plant names in dialects and R. Miliūnaitė's discussion of feather names through the eyes of students. In the sub-theme “Functional Spread of the Common Language” reports were read on international lexicon in terminology (A. Čižikaitė), phenomena of the boundary of norms in administrative language (P. Kniūkšta, R. Vladarskienė), the intersection of functional styles in the press (A. Leonavičienė), learning Lithuanian as a foreign language (L. Čubajevaitė). 2007 Jonas Jablonskis conference “New borrowings and their standardization” This conference was dedicated to “perhaps the most dynamic layer of lexicon at the moment (2007 – aut. past.) – new borrowings and the language policy that regulates them” (Bertašavičiūtė 2007: 192). A number of relevant questions were discussed and presented. One of them is the influence of foreign languages and its control (P. Kniūkšta), when faced with different realities of life: the attitude to Russians was a form of the nation’s
self-healing, and the new debts from the West spread freely, because they are not related to violence. Z. Babickienė reviewed the topics of norming in linguistic literature, L. Nevinskaitė – language norming and the dissemination of recommendations from the point of view of communication theory, and L. Vaicekauskienė raised the issues of norming in her presentation “Conservatism and modernity in the policy of norming debts”. In response to questions raised by previous conferences, the conference discussed administrative language (R. Vladarskienė), translations of European Commission texts (J. Morkus and E. Zaikauskas), new loanwords in radio and television programs (R. Kanišauskaitė). In the third session, specific cases of use of new debt words were examined: old debt words in the present context (L. Kalėdienė), debt words naming cheeses (D. Liutkevičienė), the technovartosena and norm of words with accent (J. Mikelionienė), the use of debt words in discussion forums (G. Tamaševičius). During the conference, a discussion was held on “Language standardization in Lithuania: needs, means, provisions”, which discussed the reasons for the discrepancy between the standardization of borrowed words and the actual usage, variantity, cases of unsuccessful codification, the problem of adaptation of foreign words, specific words of new culture, their usage and norm (I. Smetonienė, N. Kardelis, S. Drazdauskas, S. Žukas). 2008 Jon Jablonskis Conference “Sociolinguistic Studies of the Lithuanian Language” This is already the 16th conference of Jon Jablonskis. According to Erika Jasionytė’s review (2008), the lectures aimed to stimulate sociolinguistic research on Lithuanian language, to interest young academics in sociolinguistic topics, and to reveal various aspects of sociolinguistic research methodology. This time only 7 reports were read, at the end there was a debate. In the first presentation (M. Ramonienė) the conference participants were introduced to an international project aimed at analyzing the relationship between languages spoken in large Lithuanian cities, other language variants and national identity. Other presentations were aimed at highlighting certain characteristics of the various language variants. We examined the language of blogs (R. Miliūnaitė), the possibilities of manipulation of phraseologisms, language games and the resulting need for linguistic expertise (R. Koženiauskienė), the vocabulary characteristic of spoken language, its use and relationship with Lithuanian language dictionaries, the possible inclusion of spoken language words and their meanings in the “Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian Language” (G. Tamaševičius), the provisions of dialectal speaking (D. Aliūkaitė), the differences between male and female language (L. Simonavičienė), sign language (D. Mantrimas). “At the end of the conference, opinions and advice on how to conduct sociolinguistic research were shared” (Zubaitienė 2008: 322). 2009 Jon Jablonskis Conference “Language Variability and Linguistic Attitudes” At the 17th conference, considerable attention was again devoted to sociolinguistics, and the latest research and results of this branch of science were presented (Aleksandravičiūtė 2009: 351). The first part presents a joint Lithuanian-Latvian project “Baltic sociolinguistics: linguistic self-consciousness of society in Lithuania and Latvia” (L. Vaicekauskienė, I. Druviete, L. Lauze, J. Girčienė, L. Nevinskaitė, R. Vladarskienė). Another project – “Language Use and National Identity in Lithuanian Cities” (M. Ramonienė, K. Geben, L. Kalėdienė, A. Lichačiova) was presented at the second meeting. Researchers from Latvia presented the system of evaluation of language competences used in Latvia (R. Zauere), discussed correlations of addressing forms used in Latvian general education institutions and sociolinguistic factors (A. Blūmane). Not only dialectal codes were discussed (D. Aliūkaitė and E. Merkytė), but also linguistic attitudes of hearing and hearing impaired community members (B. Sušinskaitė), expressions of everyday style in public speech and public records, in speeches of politicians (R. Koženiauskienė, G. Tamaševičius), touched and non-touched female surnames (R. Miliūnaitė).
2010 International Conference “Jonas Jablonskis and the Centenary of the Common Lithuanian Language” The conference is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jonas Jablonskis – to give meaning to the memory, to discuss the peculiarities of the formation and development of common languages, to examine the current problems of standardization and future prospects (Aleksandravičiūtė 2010). Among the participants – 7 speakers from abroad. In the first part, the book of letters and memoirs “Konstancija and Jonas Jablonskiai” (J. Jablonski’s grandmother E. Lukėnaitė-Griciuvienė), J. Looking back to 1993, we can see how from a collegial exchange of ideas about linguistics and research, we have gone on to large international conferences, where theoretical works and practical research of importance to the world linguistics are discussed, and participants in the presentations are received from distant countries of the world. At the beginning of the plenary session of the 25th Jablonski Conference I said that “today Jablonski has travelled to many countries of the world, he probably did not expect such recognition while he was alive”. Now I say – he has travelled to many countries of the world and his name is known to world scientists, I doubt not to students and to the wider public. Undoubtedly, the fact that articles prepared on the basis of the reports were published in „Kalbos kultūra“, later — in „Bendrinė kalba“, in the electronic scientific journal „Lietuvių kalba“ and elsewhere, contributed to the dissemination of information. In 2025, the Cambridge Scholars Publishing published a collection of articles entitled „Language Variation, Change and Standardisation“ (edited by G. Judžentytė-Šinkūnienė). 30 conferences is not the end, researchers of the General Language Research Center of the Institute of Lithuanian Language and the Department of Lithuanian Language of the Institute of Applied Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University are determined to continue organizing J. Jablonskis conferences, to amaze every year with the variety of topics and interesting researches.
