LILSEYT UV IY KALBOTYROS K LA U-S' I'M A] V LIE T UV-0QO'S TS R-M O K S L Ų -A K A D E M I J A TRUMPINIMAS PRIEŠ EKSKLUZYVIŲ ILGŲJŲ BALSIŲ IR DVIBALSIŲ ie, uo TRUMPINIMAS ŽEMAIČIŲ DOUNININKŲ TARMĖJE B, ROKAITĖ I. General abbreviation laws $ 1. a) In the Žemaičių dounininkų area, whose border reaches Paluknė, Kalnalis in the west, Lieplaukė, Lauko Sodas, Tryškiai in the south and Klykolis in the east, the length of the vowels ą, ¢ (<an, en), i‘, uw and the diphthongs ie, uo (<é, a) is not equal. In other Žemaičių dialects these vowels and diphthongs are always long, and the people of the above-mentioned area have long vowels only accented with the main — ancient (always) and diphthong accent (in the second syllable from the end, if the ending is short). They are usually long and in subordinate syllables. b) Prepositional long vowels and diphthongs ie, uo are abbreviated. There are two cases of abbreviation: 1) when these vowels and diphthongs are not pronounced; 2) when they have a distracting interjection. In the second case, it is not always abbreviated. The length of the rope depends on the length of the rope. Long vowels and diphthongs ie, uo are always abbreviated when they are in the third or further syllable from the end of the word, e.g.: lidéka ~ pike, krū.malė ~ krūmaliū, pėdėlūs ~ pėdeliūs (Lc). Being in the second syllable from the end of the word and having a deductive accent, ą, ę (<an, en), i*, uw and ie, uo (<é, a) are abbreviated only if the ending is long, e.g. būris ~ būrys, žvirinū ~ žvyrynį, Zolie ~ žolė, but: būrūs ~ barius, žūolės ~ žolės (Lc). PreEspecific long vowels and diphthongs ie, uo are abbreviated when the consonant is separated from the short secondary ending, e.g.: pirdks ~ pyrdgas, plėšėks ~ plėšikas, krėslėks krėsliūkas ~ (MZ). c) Sometimes the vowels and diphthongs ie, uo of post-verbal middle syllables are also shortened, if the word has several long post-verbal syllables, e.g.: pdjęriūu ~ paémiau, baidomiios ~ baidomos „we are afraid“, vėlnonūoms ~ vilnonoms „wool“ (Trk), klaipėdūo ~ Klaipėdoje, parsėdėnau ~ pdrsodinau, prūosavėjont ~ prėsavojant, saugėjūu ~ sdugojau (MŽžč), išmiečėjūu ~ išmėčiojau (Gd), nepavėgiem ~ nepūvogėm (Pvr). The long vowels and diphthongs ie, (<é, remain unabbreviated in subjunctive syllables. uo a) 171 2. Abbreviation of single vowels (and diphthongs ie, uo) i’, § 2. The pre-E differentiaa) ls i*, w' are w abbreviated in two ways: to semilongy and to short. i, u <i’, w have more than one middle of the area mentioned —Židikai, Leckava, Laižuva, Mižaičiai, Gadūnavas, Nevarėnai, Pavirvytė (near Tryškiai), Eigirdžiai, Lauko Soda, for example. : a) Do not pronounce: lideku ~ pike, murė. nę ~ masonry (Zd), linūo ~ Iyndja, rudinu ~ mine, rupieję ~ rūpėjo (Zb), pušinėlė ~ pine trees, rikštėlę ~ rykštélé, sovinūoje ~ suvyniojo, drukt'ėsnis ~ drūktėsnis, sun'ėlis ~ sūnėlis (close: ku.zavėlis ~ kūzavėlis "such a hive", palu.kiek ~ palūkėk, Lc), patiliete ~ patylėti, ritėli ~ rytėlį, Zidiete ~ žydėti, krumė.lis ~ krūmėlis (LZ), grižiūu ~ grįždu, rilėu ~ ryliūoja "sings", rukščausis ~ rūkščiausi (MŽžč), nusigivéna ~ nusigyvėno, musėjė ~ mūsiėjai "ours" (Pvr.), virešūnūoji ~ vyresnioji, kulies ~ kūlėjas (Eig), pilūitis ~ pylūitis, pjuklielis ~ pjūklėlis (Gd), skilele ~ skylė, lupėlę = lip (Lk). b) The i, u', pronounced with a degressive accent, are also abbreviated to short and pronounced with a short suffix, if the final syllable is long and the degressive accent is in the second syllable from the end. In addition, they are shortened to short whenever the deductive consonant is in the next syllable, e.g.: tilūoms ~ tylomis, būris || bit.ris = būrys, grūdū ~ grūdai (Lc), grinūos ~ grynos, rūšū ~ rūšiū (LZ), givatės ~ snaitės, kilė ~ kyliai, ritūo ~ rytėj, rišis ~ ryšys, skilie ~ skylė, drūktū ~ drūktai, rūsė ~ rūsiai, trūktėnū ~ trūktinai (Mžė), kūlie ~ kūlė, sūnūus ~ sinaiis (Gd), givūos ~ gyvės, piplis ~ pyplys "such a fish, such a vijūnas" (Lks). § 3. a) The shortness of the i, w (<i', w’) pronounced with a deductive accent would suggest that the pre-accent i', w', a possible object, will have been shortened even before receiving the main accent and thus remained short (see also e, 9 <ie, uo<é, a in the same case). This is also shown by examples with short i, u (<i', uw') and ę, 9 (<ie, uo), when the consonant is broken off from the short secondary ending (see pirėks ~ pie, plėšėks ~ robber). The abbreviation of long vowels will occur at the same time, i.e. the deductive consonant will find the long vowels (and the diphthongs ie, uo) already abbreviated in both cases, because the deduction of the consonant from the short secondary ending, as Zinoma!, coincides with the deduction of the consonant from the long ending to the long syllable. b) i., u. <i, w occurs more in the western and eastern part of the area (Paluknė, Ylakiai, Kalnalis, Klykoliai), although a very strict boundary between short and semi-short i, u< i*, w (pronouns) cannot be drawn, because they are often mixed (e.g., in Tirkšliai it is said i., u., but e, 9 <ie, uo). b) yes, uo ~ ė, 0 $ 4. LK. ė, and the Žemaičiai pronounce it as ie, uo, The mentioned area of the Dounininkai shortens these ie, uo in the same cases as i", u'. The most contradictory ie, uo (<é, a), as well as i', u', are shortened by the middle of the area —Židikai, Leckava, Laižuva, Tirkšliai, Mižaičiai, Gadūnavas, Pavirvytė, Nevarėnai, Želvaičiai (Telšių r.), Eigirdžiai, Lauko Soda. Here ie, uo are consonant and pronounced ę, 9, e.g.:! See V. Grinaveckis, North-western mud dialects, „Lietuvių kalbotyros klausimai“, Vilnius, 2001. t. 1, Vilnius, 1957 p. 114. 172 a) Do not pronounce: ~ melėnę méléné ‘blueberry, Vaccinium Myrtillus’, ~ protioks intelligent (Zd), nėklėlęs ~ sėklėlės, romėlė ~ romėliai „frames“, skolioks ~ skolingas (Žb), ret'élis ~ rėtėlis, nedroviekęs ~ nedrovékis, pocienę ~ Pocienė (Le), kręslėlę ~ krėslėlio, perėmūos ~ pėrimos „perėjimasis“, poré.lis ~ porėlis „porelė“ (L2), lelaéu ~ Léldiciy (k.), letėnė ~ Lėtėniai (k.), džovėn ~ džiovina (Trk.), megiSp ~ meginsiu, notiend ~ Noténai (k., Mžč), veZdute ~ véZduti, motinéle ~ motynélé (Gd), nemokiejau ~ nemokéjau, vokitéjes ~ Vokytijos (Pvr), tevinę ~ tévyné, lovéle lovėlė ~ (Eig), sediete ~ to sit, klojė.ma ~ laying (LCS). b) To kirri with a deductive adjective: vėžis || vi¢Zis ~ vėžys, kokdi || k*gkéi ~ kokiė (Zd), tėvą ~ tévij, bloga ~ blogai, špokū ~ špokai (Zb), sėklėlės ~ séklelés, vėdarū ~ védarai, vėbėla ~ obulai (Lc), bégli ~ bėglių, kroklis ~ krokljs,,réksnys“ (LZ), bétédiinti ~ besédanti, pédiios ~ pėdos, palpvie ~ palovéjé (Trk), klėbis ~ klébys, vėla ~ vėlai, 29plis ~ žioplys, žmėgūus ~ žmogaūs (MZE), mélénés ~ valénés, vovérie ~ voverė (Eig), gréblis ~ gréblys, trobiio ~ trobojé (Lks). § 5. a) e, 0 <ie, uo (<é, a), pronounced with a degressive accent, are short, and the shortness of ¢, 9 indicates that they will have received the main accent already abbreviated. If ie, uo, still unabbreviated, had received the main (degressive) accent, then they could not have been abbreviated, as they could not have been pronounced with the main-ancient accent. b) Next to ¢, 9 < ie, uo, forms with barely audible i, u ('e, *o) are spoken, such as: vėžis || vėžis ~ vėžys (Žd), raudtonūoji ~ raudonoji (Trk). It is often used as an abbreviated form of the name. Such 'ę, "o have the eastern and western borders of the area (Viekšniai, Ylakiai, partly Paluknė), although in the very western and eastern borders of the area the consonants ie, uo (<é, @) are not abbreviated, and only in separate words they are consonantized and pronounced e, 9, e.g.: motejduskis ~ Motiejauskis (pvd.), vęsokėsnu ~ visokių, drobėnė ~ drobiniai (Plk), dėbėlgina ~ dobiliena (Kal, Ms), jeraté ~ ėrdičiai, jonienę ~ Jonienė, voverikštę ~ voveryksté ‘rainbow’ (KIk). Thus, the strongest shortening occurs in the middle of the area (see § 4), and the shortening weakens to the east and west. The diphthongs 'ę, *p next to ę, 9, perhaps, would indicate that the abbreviation of the prepositional ie, uo has not yet ended. § 6. ie, <é, uo abbreviation a (sediete ~ sit, trobęlę ~ trobęła) best shows the time of vowel shortening. The short g, 9 could only have come from the already narrowed é, da. Thus, the abbreviation of contralateral vowels in the Dounians dialects must be greater than a, é> uo, ie. If the consonants had begun to shorten before the narrowing of a, é, then ir 4, ė would have been ir abbreviated su to short as a, e, in some eastern highland dialects. § 7. Prefixes i*, u' ir ie, are uo abbreviated in borrowed ir words, e.g.: silūos sylės, skupdute ~ ~ skūpduti „to squeeze”, trubėlės ~ trūbėliais „tubes”, bednistie in poverty, cekūunęs ciekaiinios „small”, merdusem ~ mierūosiam ~ ~ "we will measure", ~ SveZé. Siu šviežėsnių, ~ bagotiesnis bagotėsnis, ~ šmotieli šmotėlį „gabaliuką“. )o,e~ae § 8. Abbreviated ir as g<an, en. 9, Diphthongs ou, ei<an, en minétame plote (Mosédis, Skuodas, Klykoliai) it is permissible to assume that these diphthongs already existed during the shortening period. Prepositional 9, g<an, usually en turned into very short ones; sometimes they are semi-oblong, e.g. : (a) Do not shout: drought. Snis 173 || druslesnis ~ drąsesnis ~ į grožį ~. grąžina, kosnéle «me kaqsnélio, Zusitis ~ Zqsytis, Zosinlelis ~ Zqsinelis, gręžė ~ greZéi, tevésngs ~ tevésnés,laibesnés®, tęsė ~ teséi (greta (Trk): ku.snielis ~ kąsnelis, Zo.séle ~ žąsėlė, ti.vibe tevybé ~ ,laibumas®, tisis tesys ~ ‘continue’). b) Turn with a degressive accent: drūšū ~ drąsiau, žūsū || žėsū ~ Zqsij, 29sénélus ~ žąsineliūs, 20séis ~ 2qsiés, tėvū ~ tevai, tėvūoms ~ tavomis, laibomis*. § 9. As we have seen, the greatest tendency to shorten the long vowels and ie, uo (<é, d) occurs in the middle of the area mentioned —Židikai, Leckava, Mažeikiai, Laižuva, Seda, Nevarėnai, Telšiai, Eigirdžiai, Lauko Soda. It is like a center from which the shortening decreases. The area of abbreviation of long vowels largely coincides with the area of regressive assimilation of vowels; it is possible that there is some connection between abbreviation and vowel assimilation.
