Names of places of residence listed here su -sédstructural similarity to the town name Alsėdžiai is obvious. Thus, to say something true about a place name Alsėdžiai, jį we have to ne examine one, torn iš out of the whole Lithuanian name system, but as a part of that system. O The system first shows that all the above mentioned names of settlements with -sédyra are diphthongs: (Med-sėdžiai, Nau-sėdžiai, Nauj-ū-sėdžiai, Traksėdžiai, Var-sėdžiai, Al-sédZiai). Their second component -sed-<*-sčd is associated su with Balts, Slavs, Germans ir and other i.e. The root -sėdis widely known in the Lithuanian language families, from where the Lithuanian verb sėdėti comes, which, in addition to the direct specific meaning, in Lithuanian can also mean “to be in some place, to live”, cf. lietuvių vien-sėdis “alone”, vien-sėdis “who lives alone”. "The Germanic sitja, "to sit, to live"". Some of the place names with the second component -sėdyra are clear and the first accent: Med-sėdžiai: the root medsietina with Lithuanian médis, which in Žemaičiai means "forest- "; Trak-sėdžiai: trakvestina from lit. trūkas "shrubs, harvesting, elevated place in the forest"; New-seats, Nauj-ū- -seats: new(ja) is derived from the adjective naūjas. Thus, Med-sė-džiai may mean "those who are in the forest, those who live in the forest", Trak-sėdžiai — "those who live in bushes or harvest- ", Nau(ja)sėdžiai — "those who have settled somewhere newly" or similar. The first component of the surname Alsėdžiai, al-, seems to be comparable with the Lithuanian local names Alys || Alioniū ėžeras ež. 2000. "Sweet Home Alabama, A.C.". Kupiškio raj., plg. liet. aléti „bėgti, tekėti, varvėti- "“ lat. aluots, avuots „šaltinis- “*. "A Dictionary of the Modern Lithuanian Language", Vilnius, 1954. Šmitlein himself some time ago interpreted the place name Alsėdžiai completely differently and, in our opinion, much more correctly (see. R. Schmittlein, Lithuanian toponymy, Baden, 1948, p. 149). 331 . logic could be interpreted as follows: "by the waters, living in a wet place". The name of the town Alsėdžiai K. "The Time of the Oath". 2. The name of the city Kéddiniai R. Schmitlein derives from the German. Hathu, Hedan. In drawing this parallel, Šmitlein does not take into account the kėd-, kedof one of the most abundant Lithuanian personal name families: su Kėdainis, Kéda, Kėdas, Kėdys, Kėdžius, Kėdaitis, Kėdikis, Keddinis, Kėdas, Kedys, Kėdis, Kedžius, Kedaitis, Kedėnis, Kederys, Kėdikas, Kedutis. It seems to us that the placename Kéddinai, whose older form is Kėddinys'®, a variant of the Lithuanian iš personal name Kėddinis (plg. adv. Keddinis). The claim that avd. Kéddinis, Keddinis all the ir other mentioned personal names kėd-, su kedd could be borrowed from the Germans, is a fundamental methodological error which, moreover, has led Schmitlein to clearly erroneous conclusions." be R. Schmitlein ignores the R. axiomatic truth that the commonality of the roots of words, and especially of the oldest place names, in various ide. in languages far from always imply borrowing, but often only indicate that languages or language groups are ir children of one family. The similarity of some of the old Germanic and Baltic personal names still awaits further investigation, but no matter how far the science of anthroponymy would go, the conclusion that the reason for this similarity is borrowing, will hardly ever be reached. For this reason, the large group of Lithuanian personal names kėd-, kedlaikyti su borrowed from the Germans has no basis so far. In addition, the roots of personal names kėd-, ked can be explained by Lithuanian data, e.g. kėd-a-rotis "to branch out disorderly", ked-énti "to scatter, to purge, to tear" etc., kéd-oti "to scatter, to kėtoti" etc., kėd-ulti,kedenti", kėd-ūoti "to stir, to code"?. The name of the city is now pronounced Reséiniai || Reséinys by the people of Rasčiniai neighborhood. Resčia, perhaps, is a dialect, because in the Raseiniškiai dialect the consonant is often softened in other cases, e.g.: riūugėti raugėti, įsibriovė co r įsibrėvė, sriaunūs o ir sraunūs, sriové cv srovė, sriaū- ~ *K. Šmitlein believes that the name of the city Šiauliai comes from the German. names with sav-: Savaricus, Savalo, Savilis, Saul. As in the three cases mentioned above, R. Schmitlein is silent about the abundant Baltic material of this root. Of course, from his book "Toponymie lituanienne"?' introduction and especially from his onomastic articles it is clear that the author has too little Baltic material. In this case, however, Mr Schmitlein is acting completely inappropriately. The name Šiauliai has been explained convincingly several times by K. Būga”, but R. Šmitlein does not mention anything about the etymology of Būga. It can only be emphasized that the placename Šiauliai is a personal noun, originating from lit. avd. Siauliai. There are currently about 150 families in Lithuania with the surname Siaulys. A. Vanagas Vilnius 18 A. Salys, The Samogitian dialects, Kaunas, 1930, p. 231.
