Informatics and computer equipment: Explanatory English-Lithuanian Dictionary of Language Terms /Sud. V. Dagys, A. Klupšaitė, A. Žandaris. V.: [Baltic Amadeus- ], 1993. T72>* pi This booklet, beautifully published by Baltic Amadeus company as a gift to the members of the Lithuanian Computerists' Union, who participated in the sixth "Computerists' Days" conference, came unexpectedly! provided an opportunity to discuss the glossary and terms in the field in general. in Lithuania has been interested in this subject for a long time. A quarter of a century ago, in 1969, the Republic Institute of Scientific and Technical Information and Propaganda published A. Trečiokaitė’s “Informatics Terms Dictionary- ”. A couple of years later, in 1971, the publishing house Minties published a significant “Russian—Lithuanian—- English Dictionary of Computing Technology Terms” by engineers V. Kairys, A. Kaminskas, Z. Kudirka, R. Kundrotienė, M. Lipšicas, A. Mačernius, J. Norkauskas, J. Riaubūnas, J. Stanaitis, B. Stulpinas and A. Sliavas of the Vilnius Calculation Machine Factory and the Special Bureau for the Construction of Calculation Machines. This is the normative Dictionary, which was supposed to “help form and unify” Lithuanian technical terms (p. 3). Several years later, the Chief Editor of the Encyclopedias published the normative explanatory translation “Dictionary of Terms of Scientific and Technical Information” (V., 1983) compiled by A. Trečiokaitė at the Lithuanian Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Information and Technical Economic Analysis. Finally, in 1993, the Lithuanian Information Institute published a continuation of this dictionary – the Information Terms Dictionary (compiled by A. Trečiokaitė). Therefore, the English-Lithuanian Explanatory Dictionary of Informatics and Computer Equipment Terms, not even mentioning various Lithuanian publications in this field and terms explained in Lithuanian encyclopedias, which have entered the general explanatory and translation dictionaries, was not prepared in an empty place. In recent decades, there has been a tradition of creating, managing and using these terms. It is important to bear in mind that this tradition has been connected with the standardization of language from the very beginning — the aforementioned Dictionaries are the work of linguists, especially K. Gaivenis, who have proposed and corrected many of the terms included in these dictionaries. However, the practitioners do not use these Zodyns very much, they create their own jargon from foreign languages. Because of the fact that sometimes some computer scientists (and there is no shortage of them now) who are not properly familiar with English, Russian, or even the Lithuanian language, begin to declare that the Lithuanian translations are not accurate. that available deadlines have failed; unbelieving, false or so on, one can only feel sorry that 203 not very learned People start to communicate with those "intelligent machines". Replacing terms suspected of being Russian with English ones is neither a real nor a serious terminological work. It is not politics, the honour of the language, but its terminology arrangement, exemplarity, that should determine what is worth to continue to rely on in creating and organizing our terms. And it is not appropriate to blindly follow any language. In particular, it is not appropriate to imitate the expression of other language terms. The Lithuanian terminology in each field must have Lithuanian roots. The one and the other thought about its terminological relationship with terms of other languages is not applicable to the spoken dictionary or its compilers. It can be useful both for extensive users of terms, for translators of technical literature, and for editors of dictionaries of all kinds, who alone, without linguists, are usually unable to do so. Because to do terminology work (which is first and foremost language work) and to prepare dictionaries, you need to know how to do it, just like any other work. The glossary of “Informatics and computer equipment” prepared by V. Dagis, A. Klupšaitė and A. Žandaris shows that users of terms in this field will find themselves at a crossroads. When I looked at how much the glossary adheres to the terms previously provided (compared with the terms of the first 9 pages), it became clear that there are quite a lot of differences. Not all variables indicate an improvement in the term system. For example, the English adjective alphanumeric has been replaced by the word fékstinis (so far the usual equivalent is alphabetic- -numeric, by the way, in the new A. Trečiokaitės dictionary the word simbėlinis is somehow considered better), although the content of that word is quite different. It is difficult to understand why the only character equivalent is considered to be a symbol —if only one equivalent of that multi-meaning English word is provided, as can be seen from the interpretation (“a separate element of the computer or language alphabet”), the equivalent provided in earlier dictionaries is much more appropriate. Zénklas. The dictionary is primarily intended for Lithuanian readers of English literature — it presents English terms (more than 450) with Lithuanian equivalents and Lithuanian interpretations. The authors say that they particularly want to get rid of many English terms that are blindly used by computer scientists (p. 4). Thus, the aim was to clean up, Lithuanianize Lithuanian computer science terms. Such endeavours are to be supported and commended, but first of all it would be necessary to blind the users of terms to use already published Lithuanian dictionaries. However, some new synonyms have been added to the glossary, e.g.: interval and section “range”, reference and call “call”, default and default, account and sub-account “account”, all and full parameters “absolute pathname”, global variable and global variable, etc. The meaning of these synonyms is unclear. As promised, a number of new Lithuanian terms have been added to the dictionary (not all of them are new ones and not all of them replace borrowed ones). Many interpretations of glossary terms are vague and ar inaccurate. The opacity of the meaning of terms, the ambiguity of their external meaning relations with the designated concept creates the impression that there are some artificial terms, not based on the meanings of their own language. In general, the interpretations of the terms have various defects, some of them are confusing and language errors occur, e.g.: multiprogram system 82, multimodule programs 17, computer technology 29, “not quite correct” 28, meaning transfer 24, text preparation for printing 59, etc. The glossary in question shows that there are many things to consider in that terminology.
