LITHUANIAN LINGUISTICAL QUESTIONS, XXXII (1993) STUDIES IN BALTIC ONOMASTICS VYTAUTAS VITKAUSKAS ABOUT ONE OF THE JEMAITIS OIKONIMI The village in Veiviržėnai district of Klaipėda district is officially called Liepaičiai (see Lithuanian SSR Administrative—Territorial Division Handbook, II d., p. 160). This form is widely used in writings and scientific research. For example, in V. Toporov's work "Ilpyccxuū Asx" Caoseape. L." M., 1990, p. 199 Liepaičiai place name, the only one in Lithuania, has entered into a large nest of Prussian root analysis. The name of the village is pronounced in the local dialect of Veiviržėnai, Judrėnai. [é-pa-t é (that is what even the mudmen of Švėkšnos — the southern Samogitians — say). The long e cannot have originated from ie, but only from es (perhaps here the ai, ei are most monophonic), because only from the diphthong ei the long vowel e is present in this speech before long syllables (in speech before long syllables the basic ancient accent a, e can be pronounced only briefly: mama“, rata-, kat enou ~ katinuo, s "kėpatė-~ sképatai, d r! ébon't is ~ drébantys and so on). Therefore, the available form is Leipaičiai, and Liepaiéiai appeared only after the difficult phonetics of the Žemaičių place name was transposed into common language. It may be: H: 1) Substrate from currant (see; Vvr, Jdr: gr'ėp't'e ~ greibti "to grasp", p'l é-kt ėis ~ pleikties "to neighbour, to neighbour", & 71 e ~ eižti "to neighbour, to neighbour", p'r' e-kū.ls ~ preikalas "a curtain", p'r' &m'in'ie ~ preimenė, cf. neighbouring priekuliškių p' &-# /is ~ peitvis "south" and others (cf. Z. Zinkevičius. "Lietuvių kalbos istorija" II t., p. 21). There was there (Vyr, Jdr, Grg and others) and the opposite phenomenon: šv čis'te m šviesti -"to light"1:41/8 čilas batus~3viétas batus, pas'ek' eit es ~ pasikičtęs "changed", # éips ~ žiebas "lightning", cf. žč.ips (Uzv, Krš). The assimilation of dialect or the confusion of language laws? Vaižgantas was the first to speak about Lėpūčiai, even writing Lėpačio kalnas. This is what Prof. Dr. Hearing. and 2) May be related to the surname Leipus (?), see ("Lietuvių pavardžių žodynas", L-Z, p. 47), although in the northern and southern Žemaitijos spoken area such a surname is not now (and was not previously registered). Thus, faulty transposition only brings additional trouble and uncertainty to science. When publishing researches or dictionaries, in doubtful cases, the authentic term of the word schnekt should also be written; then only the history of the placename could emerge, because not always well-heard form or non-artistic transposition can lead even famous scientists to nowhere. Especially authentic dialectal forms would be suitable for the multi-volume dictionary of place names planned to be compiled at the Lithuanian Language Institute. And Letpaičiai could be a direct legacy of the Cushitic language family closest to the western Balts, a substrate word 238 ———o——
