ACTA LINGUISTICA LITHUANICA LIETUVIŲ KALBOTYROS KLAUSIMAI XLI (1999) Aloyzas VIDUGIRIS Lithuanian Language Institute, Vilnius LAZŪNŲ KRAŠTO VIETOSVARDIAI Place names are constant companions of human life. They are created by people. Therefore, the surviving place names are a reflection and witness of the culture of the local inhabitants, their ethnic belonging. Place names can tell a lot about the past of the region and the ethnolinguistic processes that took place here. The inhabitants of south-eastern Lithuania had long been in contact with the East Slavs and, in contact with them, began to adopt their language. Place names that sound the most beautifully on Lithuanian lips are often unrecognizably changed by Slavic speakers. On the other hand, Lithuanian speakers, when using Slavic place names, also adapt them and apply them to their language system. The place names of Lazūnai region presented below are a living example of such interaction of languages and at the same time probably one of the last monuments to the large part of the Lithuanian world that once existed at the confluence of the rivers Beržuona and Nemunas and is now silent for centuries. The Lazūnai district, which for a long time belonged to the Ašmena district of Vilnius Voivodeship (and later — the governorate), during the Polish occupation — the Valažino district of Naugardūkas Voivodeship, now belongs to the Vija district of the Grodno Oblast of the Republic of Belarus (Gudja). In the past, Vija was the centre of Lyda county, where famous markets have been held since ancient times. The current Vija district consists of the neighborhoods of Bokšto, Eigirdų, Geranainiu, Jūrėtiškiai, Lazūnai, Leliūkai, Ležnėnai, Lipniškiai, Marino (g. Moryna, r. Morino), Subatninkai, Trob and Vija. The name Vija itself has been preserved only by the old Lithuanian-- speaking inhabitants of Dievėniškiai and some of the neighbouring neighbourhoods. Lazūniškiai use the Lithuanianized forms of the Slavic variant Jvje: fyja, Jiyja or Jūja. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Lithuanian language was still used in the following villages: Ažūbelaviai, Bačkininkai, Bebrėnai, Bežemniai, Daniūnai, Dauroniai, Dervagiai, Gudenioniai, Jančiūnai, Joskūnai, Kuproniai, Mačiūliniai, Pasaliai I, II, III, Saliniai, Šeškai, Uosiagiriai, Uosiagirėliai, Valdikų, Vinkšnėnai, Zomasiy I, II, Zūboniai, Žydžiūnai, etc. In the Lithuanian press of the early 20th century, people who had not lost their Lithuanian language were still regularly mentioned in Dūdai, Geranainiai, Subatninkai, Surviliškiai, and less frequently Bokšto, Trobū, Vijos. It is believed that in Lazūnai alone there were about 6,000 people who could speak Lithuanian, although according to the data collected and anonymously processed by A. Plateris in 1890, there were 3,559 such persons (Anonim 1898: 60). From the data collected at the beginning of the 19th century through the parish priests (Vedomosti 1827) and the description of this region by the experts M. Balinskis and T. Lipiūskis (Balinski, Lipinski 1846: 251) it is clear that until the middle of the 19th century Lithuanian still prevailed almost entirely from Vilnius to the Ašmena river east of present-day Gervėčiai to the border with Lithuania. 202
— ir Bokšto ir Southeast of the Lazūnai district. The rapid decline of the Lithuanian language then began. The declaration of independence of ir Lithuania sparked the desire of the people of Lazūnai to join the Lithuanian nation. Bright memories left the bishop J. The apostolic activity of Matulaitis ir jo visitation Lazūnai. Jo worry į Lazūnus was appointed active priest Lithuanian Karolis Gumbaragis (1885-1957). Personally J. Instigated by Matulaitis į Vilnius Lithuanian (busimą Vytautas Didysis) gymnasium, the first person from Lazūnai, Juozas Maceika (1906-1991), one of the greatest supporters of his compatriots and cultural workers of South-East Lithuania, came to study. The most beautiful period of cultural life for Lazūnai was K. The 50th Anniversary of the Lazūnai Priest Gumbaragis (1920-1925). In various villages the priest regularly organized evenings and Mayfests. He was a frequent guest in Pasaliai village, surrounded by forests. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, he would often ride his horse with his musician. Young people gathered from nearby Joskūnai, Jančiūnai, Dauroniai, Uosiagiriai, Valdikai, Gudenioniai and other villages. The songs and games that had begun continued for a long time after the priest had left. Father K. Gumbaragis encouraged young people to educate themselves, and thanks to him the first Lithuanian school was opened in Lazūnai. Unfortunately, the school was soon closed by the Polish occupation authorities, and the priest fell into the disgrace of the authorities because of his Lithuanian educational activities and was forced to move out. Later, the cultural life was taken care of by pupils and students from the Lazūnai neighborhood. In the villages of Bebrėnai and Lazūnai, reading rooms were established with the care of J. Maceika. However, no one else was as successful as Lazūnai. As soon as Lithuanian educational and training institutions began to operate, they were immediately liquidated. The bureaucrats of the occupiers, sitting in Bokštas village, Valažino district and Naugarduc voivodeship, were characterized by extraordinary inhumanity. Many times people told with horror about two cases of ruthlessness of Polish officials: a poor resident of Pasalis, J. Varanelis, who had given premises to a Lithuanian school, was forced to go on foot every day for almost a year to register (beggar) in Bokšto village, which is 18-20 km away. ; K. Barauskas, a peasant from the village of Lazūnai, wishing to obtain a certificate of Lithuanian nationality for his son so that he could study at the Lithuanian gymnasium in Vilnius, went to the head of the village of Lūgamėnai, the head of the Valažino district (about 40 km) and the voivode of Naugarduckas (40 km) many times, went on foot to Warsaw to the Minister of Education (400 km) and still did not get anything. Lithuanian children in Lazūniškiai were forced to go to Polish schools. The Lithuanian language was completely removed from the Lazūnai church and was never allowed again. This ultimately undermined the roots of the Lithuanian language. Many of them had sex at one time. B. Maknickas, who was born in the village of Saliniai in 1908, recounted that until he was 16 years old, he could speak nothing but Lithuanian and had great difficulty learning both Lithuanian and Polish, while his children were already real Lithuanians, who only considered themselves Poles according to their religion. The Žaldokai (J. Žaldokas and A. Žaldokienė, born in 1902) from the village of Bebrėnai, who had spoken only Lithuanian all their lives, could 203
not learn to speak good Lithuanian anymore. In 1993 there was only one Sališkė Filomena Varanelytė-Avižičienė, born. 1925 m., well-versed in the traditional dialect of her region. Although the Lazūnai dialect has disappeared, its land has produced a number of distinguished people for Lithuania: Juozas Maceika, who came from the village of Lazūnai, engineer, agronomist and local historian Pranas Semokas (1909-1986) from Gudenioniai, writer, journalist and dictionary writer Jonas Petrauskas (1915) from Daunoriai, doctor Vlado Kemeišaitis-Gurevičienė from Uosiagiriai and many others. Many of his compatriots were helped by Juozas and Salomėja Maceikai to get an education, acquire a specialty and find shelter. The Lazūnų Lithuanian dialect belongs to the eastern Altai Vilnius dialect and is the southernmost part of it. The Lazūnai schneck was studied by E. Volter (Wolter 1899: 173— 187), J. Jablonskis (JJ 1906; 1933: 125-132). A considerable amount of Lithuanian folklore was recorded by J. Šlapelis in 1923 (Šlapelis 1927: 462-464). Around 1929, the Polish linguist W. Porzezinski visited Lazūnai, but nothing is known about the fate of the material he collected. In 1930 the dialect texts of Lazūnai district were recorded and published by Estonian P. Arumaa (Arumaa 1930: 31-40). In 1930, he joined his assistant, the Norwegian Baltist Chr. In 1938, he was replaced by J. Gerulis. They were assisted by J. Maceika and P. Semokas. In the Manuscripts Department of the Vilnius University Library there is also a text written by K. Buga called Lazūnų šnektas (KBg 1906), but whether the scholar himself ever visited Lazūnai is unknown. In the post-war years Lazūnų šnektas was studied and published by J. Senkus (Senkus 1958: 183— 194; 1959: 215-230), E. Grinaveckienė (Grinaveckienė 1960: 191-205), Moscow T. Sudnik (Sudnik 1972: 15-115). In 1985, the author of this article and J. Petrauskas compiled the “Lazūnų dialekto žodynas” (LzZ) and others. Here are presented place names of Laziiny region collected by different people. The names of places in his native village Lazūnai were collected and described by J. Maceika in his monograph “Lazūnai” (Maceika 1998). A considerable number of place names were recorded by the word collector and co-author of the “Lazūnų dialekto žodynas” J. Petrauskas. The Lazūnai region namebook was carefully studied by Mr. Semokas. He not only travelled extensively in the Lazūnai area, collecting people’s names, surnames, nicknames and place names, but also searched the archives. He wrote articles on names of Lazūniškiai (Semokas 1984: 62-72) and surnames and nicknames (Semokas 1989: 108-121). In addition, P. Semokas left three considerable manuscript studies about the Lazūnai region, which are kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences Library. A great advantage is that he wrote many of the place names in two or three languages, i.e. in Lithuanian, Gudi and often in Polish. A few place names were recorded by dialect researchers E. Volteris, J. Jablonskis, J. Senkus, E. Grinaveckienė, A. Balašaitis, T. Sudnik and others. In 1957, the author of this article, collecting local names, cycled around many villages in Lazūnai area. Many Lazūnai area place names 204
vo will be collected during 1976 ir 1988 m. expeditions ir other longer shorter ar trips. Below is an alphabetical list of local names used in Lazūnai region. Any examination of the jų division has ir been abandoned. Many of jų them are not different from all other local names in the Lithuanian language area. It is possible to draw attention only to the “substantive” place names typical of Lazūnai, which are formed, following the example of the Slavic languages, from the surname or nickname’s origin and the noun endings -(j)is, -ji, e.g. : Breivoji (i. e. Breivos) pv., Buikoji (i. e. Būikos) pv., Buikojis or Būrtikosis kalnas, Skrūdžioji (part of Bebrėnai k., where lived the Skrudžiai called bebrėniškiai), Miisios (i. e. our) Zbištės pv. Due to the forgetting of their native language and the influence of Slavic languages, there are duplicates, Slavic translations. This is particularly true for microtoponimy. The authentic forms of place names were best preserved by the old people who spoke Lithuanian all the time. Even when they spoke Slavic, they retained the Lithuanian root, and often the whole form, e.g. : Ažūdaržis, Dvarnėčlis, Pirmieji, Platieji, Varykla or Liūnas —p. Liūn, Laukėliai - slv. Laukėlis, Trakėliai —sl. Tracey. Where bilingualism has lasted for a long time and Lithuanian language is almost forgotten, various verbs take hold, e.g. : Ažūkluonis —p. "Silva, S.A.". Zaharodnica, Longieji —g. 2nd ed., 2nd ed., 3rd ed., 4th ed., 5th ed., 6th ed., 7th ed., 8th ed., 9th ed., 10th ed., 11th ed., 12th ed., 13th ed., 14th ed., 15th ed., 16th ed., 17th ed., 18th ed., 19th ed., 20th ed., 21st ed., 22nd ed., 23rd ed., 24th ed., 25th ed., 26th ed., 27th ed., 28th ed., 29th ed., 30th ed., 31st ed., 32nd ed., 33rd ed., 34th ed., 35th ed., 36th ed., 37th ed., 38th ed., 39th ed., 40th ed., 41st ed., 42nd ed., 43rd ed. "Vincent (Vincent, Vincent, Vincent)" (in French). Vyhan and so on. Some of the local name verbs sometimes have different stems, for example: nom. pl. Dauroniai, Dervagiai, Gerandiniai, Zūboniai, but acc. pl. Dauronis, Petronis, Zūbonis, ines. pl. Dauronysa, Dervagysa, Gerandinysa, Zūbkonysa. The list of names of places of residence, in addition to the villages of Lazūnai district, also includes the names of further villages, towns, cities and several other countries and their capitals. All the names mentioned in the list are closely related to the lives of the people of Lazūnai or people close to them. It is part of their life and world. The list shows the place name in alphabetical order, followed in brackets by its pronunciation and its Slavic, mostly Gudish, equivalent, and after a dash — data about the object named by the place name and its location. The location of some of the villages may not be quite accurate, because it was not always possible to determine it. 1. Names of places of residence Alenavas (2) || Alienavas (2) (g. Galėnava, r. IM AREA VON LAZUNAI Summary In the old Lithuanian ethnic territory, presently in the eastern part of the Vija district, Grodno county, Belarusian Republic, not far from the junction of the Berzuona (Berézina) with the Memel (Nemunas), there was an area, until recently relatively densely populated by Lithuanians, known under the name of the village and former manor — now the town and municipal centre — Laziinai (Lazdiiny). Laziinai is a settlement inhabited by Lithuanians, which is located in the south-west of Vilnius at the farthest (ca. 120-130 km). It is one of the most archaic and distinctive East-Austrian dialects of Vilnius. Unfortunately, it is now completely extinct. This article lists the toponyms (place names, river names and microtoponyms) used by the ancient inhabitants of Lazunai when they paid for their lives, their work and their travels. They are part of their world and their lives. 222
