CHRONICLE OF THE LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE 1999 Struktūra The Institute operated 7 departments: The Great Dictionary of Lithuanian Language (headed by Vytautas Vitkauskas, PhD), General Language Dictionary (headed by Gertrūda Naktiniene, PhD), Vocabulary (headed by Vitalija Maciejauskienė, PhD), Grammar (headed by Vytautas Ambrazas, PhD), Language Culture (headed by Pranas Kniūkšta, PhD), Terminology (headed by Kazimieras Gaivenis, PhD), Language History and Dialectology (headed by Kazys Morkūnas, PhD); publishing house (manager — Audronė Stanislovaitienė). Director of the Institute —prof. habil. dr. Algirdas Sabaliauskas. Deputy Directors —Dr. Kazys Morkūnas (for scientific affairs), Kęstutis Jurkūnas (for general affairs). Scientific secretary — Irena Andriukaitienė. At the end of 1999 the Institute had 140 employees, of whom 93 were researchers (39 scientists: 3 PhD professors, 1 PhD associate professor, 6 PhD associate professors, 4 PhD associate professors, 25 PhDs). On 1 October, Audronė Gužauskaitė and Ilona Norvilaitė were admitted to the joint doctoral program of Vytautas Magnus University and the Institute of Lithuanian Language in the field of philology, financed by the Institute. The following are the main activities of the Institute, which were established by the Decree No. 825 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 02 July 1998 “On the most important activities of state research institutes”: 1) research on lexicology, lexicography and grammatical structure of the Lithuanian language; 2) studies of the history of the Lithuanian language, dialects and language relations; 3) research on the functioning of Lithuanian language in society and terminology. The most important decisions of the Institute Council Chairman of the Council — Prof. habil. dr. Vytautas Ambrazas, Vice-Chairman —habil. Dr. Nijolė Sližienė, secretary — dr. Gertrude Nightingale. In total, 6 Council meetings took place. At the meeting on 29 January, it was decided: to approve the publication of external linguistic studies in a separate publication; to propose to the editor-in-chief of the publication, Dr. Giedrius Subačius, to coordinate the funding issues with the Directorate of the Institute; to adopt the 1998 report on the Institute's scientific 22 activities and the 1999 work plan; to approve the printing of the following publications: Lithuanian language dictionary 19 (editor Vytautas Vitkauskas); 227

On May 11-14, Swiss scientists Jan Peter Locher, Markus Roduner, Simonas Christenas, PhD student Edmundas Trumpa collected language data in the surroundings of Dūkštas, Leipalingis, Reškutėnai, Veisiejai. 11 informants were interviewed, hour-long texts were recorded. 6 of June 25 — July 5 d. Asta Leskauskaitė (leader), Ona Aleknavičienė, Rima Bacevičiūtė, Ričardas Petkevičius participated in dialectological expedition in Seirijų neighborhood (Lazdijų r.). Together took place Students of Vilnius Pedagogical to University carrying out dialectological practice. July 19-30 d. dialectological expedition in the vicinity of Grybėnai (Ignalina district) participated doc. dr. Laima Grumadienė (leader) with a group of Vilnius Pedagogical University students. On March 2-3, St. Petersburg State University hosted the 28th Scientific and Methodological Conference of Higher Education Teachers and Postgraduate Students on the Problems of Phonetics and Accentology of Baltic Languages. The papers were read by the Institute’s doctoral students: Daiva Atkočaitytė (Abbreviation of unpronounced syllables in the Southern Samogitian Raseiniškių dialect), Vilija Lazauskaitė (Regarding the oxytonization of 0-stem nouns in the Eastern Highlands Vilnius and Southern Highlands dialects), Asta Leskauskaitė (Vowel end vocalism in the Southwestern Southern Highlands), Edmundas Trumpa (Vowel quality of alveolar consonants in the Pelesa dialect). On March 9, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Lithuanian Studies was marked by the scientific conference Lithuanian Studies: Traditions, Present, Perspectives. At the conference organized by the three institutes —Lithuanian Language, Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, Lithuanian History—presentations were read by: Prof. habil. dr. On March 25, Pranas Skardžius, a general language theoretician and educator, presented at a seminar organized by the State Lithuanian Language Commission at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. On April 17, at the seminar organized by the Council of the Lithuanian Language Society, Dr. Jonas Klimavičius (Russification of Phraseology in Independent Lithuania), Dr. Danguolė Mikulėnienė (Strangers in the local press). On April 23, the Centre for Dialectology of the Faculty of Humanities of Šiauliai University hosted a scientific seminar on Dialects: the work of young linguists. Presentations were given by Vilija Lazauskaitė (On the presentation of pronunciation variants in dialect dictionaries), Asta Leskauskaitė (A couple of remarks on the localities of the Southern Highlands). At the conference Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuanian Society and Science Change 1989—1999, held in Kaunas on April 28, habil. dr. Simas Karaliūnas read the presentation Onomastics and Lithuanian ethnogenesis studies. On April 29, 2017, at the conference held at Vytautas Magnus University, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the linguist Alfredo Senno, Prof. Dr. Algirdas Sabaliauskas read the presentation A scientist who loved Lithuania. At the scientific conference Relics of Western Baltic Language and Culture (3) held at Klaipėda University on May 14, habil. dr. Saulius Ambrazas read the presentation Several isoglosses of Lithuanian and Prussian languages. On May 20, 2017, at the Scientific Conference of Šiauliai Pedagogical University, doc. dr.
