Psychometric Examination of the Body, Eating, and Exercise Comparison Orientation Measure (BEECOM) among Spanish Adolescents and Young Adults

Abstract

The Body, Eating, and Exercise Comparison Orientation Measure (BEECOM) has been frequently used within the context of research on eating disorders (ED). Although both long (BEECOM-L) and short (BEECOM-S) versions of the instrument exist, their psychometric properties have not yet been concurrently investigated across different populations in terms of age and gender. The present study aimed to compare the psychometric properties of both the BEECOM-L and the BEECOM-S among Spanish male and female non-clinical adolescents and young adults. Data from 4 samples including 1213 middle school and college students enrolled in 10 education centers from southern Spain (age ranging from 12 to 35 years, Mage = 17.796, SDage = 4.796, 53% females) were analyzed using factorial, correlation, and regression analysis techniques. Results provided evidence that support the reliability, measurement invariance according to age and gender, and convergent/incremental validity for the scores from both the BEECOM-L and BEECOM-S. Concerning factorial validity, marginally acceptable and adequate goodness-of-fit indices were obtained for the BEECOM-L and BEECOM-S, respectively. The BEECOM-S proves to be a psychometrically sound instrument with potential value for assessing social comparisons focused on body, eating, and exercise in non-clinical adolescents and young adults from Spain.

A clea example o such a popula ion would be adolescen gi ls and boys unde 17 ( he minimum age o indi iduals on which he psychome ic p ope ies o he BEECOM ha e been es ed so a [ 17 ]), who ep esen an impo an a ge g oup o ED p e en ion e o s [ 19 ]. Ma e ials and Me hods 2.1. Sample Size Calcula ion The sample size o he s udy was d awn using wo di e en p ocedu es. Fi s ly, a Mon e Ca lo simula ion was conduc ed in Mplus e sion 7 (h p://www.s a model.com/ index.sh ml, accessed on 21 Decembe 2022) [ 25 ] o de e mine he sample size needed o ob ain eliable es ima ions o he pa ame e s in ol ed in he con i ma o y ac o analyses (CFA) [ 26 ]. This simula ion was conduc ed aking in o accoun he main ea u es o he mos complex model (i.e., he one co esponding o he BECCOM-L) in e ms o he num- be o ac o s/indica o s, he mean alues expec ed o ac o loadings, and he possible absence o no mali y o he da a. The esul s o his simula ion sugges ed ha , assuming a missing da a alue o 1%, a sample size o 250 pa icipan s pe g oup was su icien o p o ide 80% s a is ical powe in he es ima ion o he model pa ame e s. Secondly, a powe analysis using G*Powe e sion 3.1 (Hein ich Heine Uni e si y Düsseldo , Düsseldo , Ge many) [ 27 ] was conduc ed o de e mine he sample size needed o conduc he eg es- sion analyses. Pa icipan s A o al o 1297 high school, middle school, and college s uden s en olled in 10 di e en educa ion cen e s om sou he n Spain we e in i ed o pa icipa e in he s udy using a non-p obabilis ic sampling echnique. The ollowing inclusion c i e ia we e applied: (i) o he olde age g oup, ha ing a simila age o ha o he pa icipan s included in he s udies in which he BEECOM-L and he BEECOM-S we e p oposed (i.e., be ween 17 and 35 yea s old) [ 16 , 17 ]; (ii) o he younge age g oup, being aged be ween 12 and 16 yea s old; and (iii) o bo h age g oups, o p o ide in o med consen o pa icipa e in he esea ch, which was addi ionally eques ed om pa en s o legal gua dians o indi iduals aged unde 18 yea s old. Failu e o p o ide in o med consen ei he by hemsel es (n= 18) o by pa en s o legal gua dians (n= 29) led o he exclusion o 47 po en ial pa icipan s. Da a we e excluded om he analyses when he pa icipan s (i) epo ed ha ing a clinical diagnosis in e ms o ED (n= 10); (ii) iden i ied hemsel es as non-bina y in e ms o gende (n= 14); o (iii) ailed he embedded alidi y check ques ion (n= 13). Thus, da a om 1213 pa ici- pan s who mos ly iden i ied hemsel es in e ms o e hnici y as Whi e/Caucasian (96%) we e analyzed conside ing he ollowing ou subg oups: (i) younge emales (n= 287; M age = 14.066, SD age = 1.262); (ii) olde emales (n= 360; M age = 21.369, SD age = 3.490); (iii) younge males (n= 295; M age = 14.190, SD age = 1.127); and (i ) olde males (n= 271; Mage = 20.926, SDage = 3.845). The 18 i ems comp ising he ins umen a e a ed on a 7-poin scale om 1 (ne e ) o 7 (always). The i ems a e g ouped in o 3 ac o s consis ing o 6 i ems (long e sion) o 3 i ems (sho e sion) ha assess body compa isons (e.g., “I compa e my body shape o ha o my pee s”), ea ing compa isons (e.g., “Du ing meals, I compa e wha I am ea ing o wha o he s a e ea ing”), and exe cise compa isons (e.g., “I pay close a en ion when I hea pee s alking abou exe cise in o de o de e mine i I am exe cising as much as hey a e”). Physical Appea ance Compa ison Scale-Re ised (PACS-R) We used a Spanish ansla ion [ 10 ] o he PACS-R [ 28 ]. Ea ing Diso de Examina ion—Ques ionnai e Sho (EDE-QS) We used a Spanish ansla ion [ 29 , 30 ] o he EDE-Q [ 31 ], which inco po a ed he wo main modi ica ions p oposed in he sho e sion o he ins umen (i.e., a ecall pe iod on 7 ins ead o 28 days and 4 ins ead o 7 esponse ca ego ies) [ 32 ]. The 12 i ems comp ising he ins umen (e.g., “Ha e you been delibe a ely ying o limi he amoun o ood you ea o in luence you weigh o shape [whe he o no you ha e succeeded]”), a e a ed on a 4-poin scale om 0 (0 days o No a all) o 3 (6–7 days o Ma kedly) and co e essen ial symp oms o ano exia ne osa, bulimia ne osa, and binge ea ing diso de [ 32 ]. Acco ding o he pu poses o he p esen s udy, and consis en wi h p e ious esea ch, h ee di e en sco es de i ed om he ins umen we e used: (i) a sco e e lec ing o e all ED symp oma ology [ 14 , 16 – 18 ]; (ii) an agg ega e sco e o i ems co e ing die a y es ain symp oms (i.e., I ems 1 and 2) [ 13 , 16 , 18 ]; and (iii) an agg ega e sco e o i ems co e ing weigh and shape conce ns (i.e., I ems 4, 5, and 6) [ 13 , 17 , 23 , 33 ]. Values ≥ 0.864 ( α ) and 0.932 ( ρ ) we e ound o he o al sco es o he EDE-QS in he p esen s udy (see Table 1 o de ails). Nu ien s 2023,15, 626 5 o 18 2.3.4. As model i indices, alues ≥ 0.95 o ≥ 0.90 o he compa a i e i index (CFI), and ≤ 0.06 o ≤ 0.08 o bo h he oo -mean-squa e e o o app oxima ion (RMSEA) and he s anda dized oo -mean-squa e esidual (SRMR), espec i ely, a e conside ed as excellen o ma ginally accep able [ 37 ]. Po en ial sou ces o model misspeci ica ion we e iden i ied by examining modi ica ion indices (MI) [37]. Resul s de i ed om he CFA we e employed o compu ing composi e eliabili y [ 38 ], which—along wi h he in e nal consis ency alues—se ed o p o ide e idence on eliabili y o bo h e sions o he BEECOM. Secondly, examina ion o he measu emen in a iance o he BEECOM sco es ac oss he popula ion subg oups was conduc ed using mul ig oup CFA ollowing he p ocedu e desc ibed elsewhe e [ 21 ]. When calcula ing hese di e ences, he pooled s an- da d de ia ion was ob ained by weigh ing he speci ic sample size o he di e en g oups in ol ed in he compa isons [ 41 ]. The magni udes o he esul ing e ec sizes we e in e - p e ed as i ial (d= 0.00 o 0.20), small (d= 0.20 o 0.50), in e media e (d= 0.50 o 0.80), o la ge (d> 0.80) [40]. Thi dly, e idence o con e gen alidi y was ob ained by compu ing ze o-o de co e- la ions ( ) be ween he BEECOM sco es and sco es on (i) physical appea ance compa isons and (ii) h ee di e en ED ou comes (i.e., o e all ED symp oms, weigh and shape conce ns, and die a y es ain ). Finally, possible di e ences in he s eng h o he mul i a ia e ela ionships be ween he BEECOM sco es and he ED ou comes ac oss popula ions subg oups we e examining using Model 1 o PROCESS mac o o SPPS ollowing he p ocedu e desc ibed elsewhe e [ 42 ]. This mean in oducing wo new g oups o independen a iables in o he eg ession models desc ibed in his pa a- g aph. The i s such g oup consis ed o a mul i-ca ego ical mode a ing a iable in ol ing he ou s udy popula ion subg oups. This a iable was indica o -coded in PROCESS wi h he younge emale g oup as he e e ence g oup, yielding h ee dummy a iables (younge males s. younge emales [D 1 ], olde emales s. younge emales [D 2 ], and olde males s. younge emales [D 3 ]). The second o hese g oups consis ed o he p oduc e ms be ween he p edic o a iable and he mode a o (i.e., BEECOM sco es x D 1–3 ). This p ocedu e es ed he in e ac ions in ol ing each o he candida e p edic o s (i.e., each o he speci ic BEECOM sco es) in sepa a e models. As a esul o his p ocedu e, condi ional s anda dized e ec s o BEECOM sco es on he h ee ED ou comes unde conside a ion (i.e., simple slopes) o each o he ou popula ion subg oups we e ob ained. In o de o deal wi h e en ual iola ions o some o he assump ions inhe en in he applica ion o eg ession echniques (e.g., homoscedas ici y o a iance o esidual no mali y), he las wo se s o analyses desc ibed in his pa ag aph we e conduc ed by applying a bias-co ec ed and accele a ed boo s apping echnique o 5000 esamples [ 22 ]. Missing da a (0.72%) we e handled using ull in o ma ion impu a ion me hods implemen ed in Mplus e sion 7 (h p://www.s a model.com/index.sh ml, accessed on 21 Decembe 2022).
