Kale DOI -10.5281/zenodo.17266886 Abstract: Digital literacy has emerged as prerequisite skill for future librarians, enabling them to adapt to evolving technologies and develop the skills necessary to remain update. Librarians are increasingly expected to act as innovators and information providers by engaging in content creation, evaluation and marketing library services through digital platforms. While challenges such as limited funding, ethical concerns, digital divides, and skill gaps persist, these issues can be addressed through strategic planning, collaboration with technology partners, and the integration of cloudbased resources. Above all, continuous professional development remains vital to ensure that librarians are prepared to meet the demands of a digitally driven community. This study employs a qualitative research approach, based on review of existing secondary sources combining with selfexperiential observation to gain a comprehensive understanding of the research topic. The present study intends to understand how librarians can be digital literate to promote information while simultaneously fostering innovation in library services. Keywords: Digital Literacy, Library Innovation, Innovative Library Services, Library Transformation, Media Literacy Introduction: The rapid advancement of ICT and digital technologies have fundamentally transformed the role and functions of today’s library. Traditionally library was the physical place for reading, studying and borrowing reading materials. However, in present digital era there is drastic change in libraries functions also evolved librarian’s role from only custodian of books to digital literacy educator, innovator and facilitator of information access in an innovative way. Digital literacy is now a basic skill that every librarian should encompass in modern society. It is the ability to find, evaluate, and use digital information effectively and responsibly. Library professionals should have ability to empower users by teaching them navigating online information from different digital platforms, evaluate resources considering and understanding the ethical issues such as online privacy and misinformation. In this way, librarians contribute significantly to reducing the digital divide and promoting equitable access to information. Beyond education, librarians are progressively seen as innovators to design and deliver the library services. The librarian and library should be capable of transitioning to digital collections, online databases and virtual programs to meet the changing needs of users and technological capabilities. To meet the demands of modern libraries, library

Jadhav 65 professionals must be digitally literate and technologically competent to create digital content, to manage digital resources, understand cybersecurity and data privacy to educate users about online safety, able to use social media and online engagement to promote library services and resources virtually, capable of providing virtual assistance and designing virtual learning environments that will extend the reach of the library beyond its physical walls. This innovation ensures libraries remain relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of diverse communities. The librarian’s daily responsibilities encompass guiding users to become information literate and facilitating access to global digital resources. This research intends to understand how librarians can be digital literate to promote information while simultaneously fostering innovation in library services. Literature Review: Ranjan, J. & Patel, M. (2021) conducted a study of library users of Central University of Jharkhand and collected data related to digital literacy of tools and technologies. The study analysed awareness of various databases, e-learning tools and various types of literacy among targeted population. The study revealed there is a need of continuous training and digital literacy program for better work output. Inamdar, S. A. (2021) conducted research to identify the role of libraries in promoting digital literacy in the 21st century. Based on secondary sources of data such as articles, journals, websites, research papers and others sources, the study revealed that by providing access to technology, digital resources, and training programs, libraries can help individuals of all ages and backgrounds to develop the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently and effectively. The recommended that by serving as a hub for digital learning and exploration, libraries can help to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion for all. Digital Literacy in Librarianship: Digital literacy for librarians involves various components, including technical abilities, information literacy, analytical thinking, and ethical considerations. Librarians are tasked with overseeing digital collections, assisting users in navigating online platforms, and effectively addressing misinformation. Essential Digital Competencies: Technical & Digital Literacy: No doubt, today’s librarian must possess the computer skills, proficient in using different software tools, expert in Library Management Systems (LMS), skilled in digital archiving for digitizing and storing documents. They must know how to use search engine and academic databases effectively; retrieving and evaluating information in digital databases also to assess its credibility, reliability and must aware about bias of online information. These skills will enable librarian to empower users to critically evaluate and safely navigate information available in digital environment. Digital literacy facilitates easy access to electronic documents and commercial databases, providing users with useful information. Modernizing library services through digital literacy systems is crucial, and the librarian should communicate with users through digital means. The World Wide Web serves as a powerful medium for information publishing and access, with

Jadhav 66 various sources available for education and research Digital Communication and Digital Marketing Skills: Using email for communication, virtual reference services for assisting patrons through chat, email, or video and mastering digital collaboration tools for teamwork, outreach, and community engagement are crucial for librarians in order to effectively guide and support users. The use of social media in libraries presents a number of opportunities for professional communication. On the other hand, social media gives considerable prospects for promoting and marketing library services, events, and resources; nevertheless, it also necessitates careful consideration of the privacy of users and the everchanging nature of digital communication (Panda & Sati, 2024). Ethical & Legal Awareness: These are the basic skills that every librarian must possess. They need to be very well aware of the plagiarism, proper copyright issue, digital rights management and proper citation practices. With the citing digital sources, maintaining digital privacy i.e. protecting user data and confidentiality is equally important. Digital Content Creation and Curation: To serve the modern society users, producing multimedia tutorials, digital exhibits, and maintaining rich online collections has become an essential task of the librarian. Selecting, organizing and creating quality digital content, evaluating and filtering content for relevance, sharing curated content through various channels are the fundamental skills required of librarian when creating of digital content. Adaptability & Continuous Learning: Digital literacy is the vital for today’s librarian. Staying current with emerging technologies, updating knowledge, exploring AI tools, e-learning platforms, automation and following trends in digital tools are also significant for librarian to excel as digital literacy educator and innovator. Webinars, online courses and training sessions are the key sources for professional development. Libraries will continue to be a crucial institution for encouraging digital literacy in the years to come as technology plays an ever-more important role in education, the workforce, and daily life ( Nasir & Jana, 2024). Innovation in the 21st Century Libraries: Library is no longer a physical space for readers; it is a place beyond physical wall available 24*7 virtually anywhere and anytime. By exposing the digital literacy tools and method, the creativity and learning might be more creative and interesting. (Saubari & Baharuddin, 2016). Innovation drives the transformation of library services from passive information dissemination to active knowledge management and community engagement. Examples include: Creation of Digital Repositories and Content Management Systems: Implementation of digital institutional repositories with the digital collection like ebooks, digitization of manuscripts, research and publication works of institution and other audio /video resources for online access. Creation and Maintenance of Library Websites: Library website is valuable tool to deliver innovative library services. It handles significant duties of staff by addressing most of the user queries. A

Jadhav 67 quality and effective library website will cover the essential components such as access to OPAC, databases, information such as opening hours, contact details, event announcements, and reference services, with the features like search tools, user accounts, and online renewals or reservations. It serves as a digital gateway to the library's resources, services, and collections. RFID Based System: RFID technology is increasingly used in libraries to enhance operational efficiency and improve user experience. Use of RFID technology integrated with basic Library Management System will enhance the library services with auto issue/ return of books, stock verification and also for data analytics which will help librarian to make decision, improve services and to measure impact. RFID tags, embedded in books and other materials, enable automated inventory management, theft prevention, and easy tracking of misplaced items. Use of Social Media and Online Platforms: Social media platforms like YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Twitter are the key source to extend services through comprehensive digital content. For example YouTube is a popular media serves as a powerful platform where libraries can host longer instructional videos or recorded events. Libraries can create channels dedicated to various topics such as reading programs, author interviews, or educational tutorials. Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI-based services are transforming libraries by enhancing information access, user support, and operational efficiency. Through implementation of AI powered chatbots and virtual assistants, libraries can provide 24/7 reference services, provides voice-based information retrieval and user assistance. AI also supports personalised recommendations, intelligent search, and content curation by analysing user behavior and preferences. By integrating AI, libraries can better satisfy the evolving needs of users in the digital era while minimizing inhouse workflows. Use of online services such as instant messaging, virtual helpdesk for outreach and instant answers to FAQs. Challenges in Preparing Librarians for the Future: Adapting to the digital age presents several barriers for librarians: Funding Constraints: High costs and limited resources for advance technological upgradation and staff training. Resistance to Change: Adapting legacy mindsets and workflows can be difficult Digital Divide: There can be a digital divide for those who have limited technological access and digital literacy. Skill Gaps: Bridging competencies for rapid adoption of new technologies, technical skills and collaboration among staff. Data Privacy and Ethical Concern: For instance, AI generated data can be of copyright and privacy concern. There are ongoing debates about fair use and ethical use of user data by these tools. Navigating Challenges: Ongoing professional development is essential for librarians to stay updated and upskilling in digital literacy with

Institutional support for innovative pilot projects, digital outreach, and mentorship. Conclusion: In conclusion, the transformation of libraries in the digital age is not just a shift in formatit is a profound reimagining the library world. Digital literacy is a fundamental need for future librarians. They need to be ready to adapt new technology and develop digital skills to remain competent in the modern world. As an innovator and information provider, content creation, editing, evaluation, ethical understandings, use of online platforms for promoting and marketing of library services has become the valuable task of library professionals in order to provide innovative and effective library services to patrons. Adapting to new technological tools and techniques presents challenges like lack of funds availability, ethical issues, digital divide due to limited resources, skill gap among professionals. However, these challenges can be overcome with proper planning, collaborating with tech firms for sharing cloud-based resources.
