GeoFireGuard

L'Erario, Vito

Abstract

(EN) Born out of the need to provide increasingly up-to-date data on natural and human-induced risks driven by the climate crisis, GeoFireGuard is an open data service for monitoring and protecting areas at risk of wildfires. It leverages geospatial data made available by the Sentinel constellations of the European Union/ESA Copernicus programme; HS2 and ERA5, Landsat, EMIT, GIBS, Aqua and Terra, TRMM and GPM, IMERG, and the FIRMS service by NASA/USGS (USA). Area of interest: Vulture Alto-Bradano (Basilicata - Italy).

Citation of the creator as a source is required, but use of any plan text does not imply endorsement for new projects or proposals. 1. Project Description GeoFireGuard is an open data service for monitoring and protecting areas at risk of wildfire. It processes satellite imagery accessible through a dedicated WebGIS. Development of wildfire risk prediction models is a core aspect of the project. 2. Data Storage and Backup The data creator is solely responsible for data storage, employing monthly backups. Data are stored in formats including *.shp, *.gpkg, *.tif, and *.xml with comprehensive metadata ensuring reproducibility and interpretation. 3. Data Standards and Sharing Services Data will be shared via OGC services (WMS, WMTS) to ensure interoperable access, and published on Zenodo with a permanent DOI. 4. Data Preservation and Security Data are preserved at the SATmonitoring site for at least 10 years. Security measures include regular backups, controlled access, firewall protection, and up-to-date antivirus software to safeguard sensitive data. 5. Data Access and Sharing Policy • Data will be publicly accessible within 6 months of generation, unless restricted by technical or regulatory reasons. • Access points include Zenodo, the WebGIS, and OGC services. • For additional data or clarifications, users may contact the creator directly via email. • Third-party data incorporated retain original licenses and attribution requirements. 6. Budget and Resources for Data Management • Data management costs are borne by the creator, including: • Hardware and software infrastructure (servers, backup systems, security). • Time invested in dataset maintenance and WebGIS updates. • Publication costs on Zenodo or related services, if any. Currently, no external funding is secured; future proposals will include these considerations. 7. Data Update and Maintenance The dataset and this DMP will be reviewed and updated at least annually or upon significant changes in data or management procedures. 8. Responsibility and Governance Vito L’Erario holds sole responsibility for data management, updates, and sharing. Future collaborations will involve formal agreements defining roles and responsibilities.
