Abstract

This Practice Abstract n.2 - Second Set - focuses on the technological package developed by EWA-BELT, which promotes early seedbed preparation with vigorous draft animals and makes more and better-quality manure available at household level. Consequently, it promotes early sowing and enhances the resilience of farming systems to climatic variability.

However, they suffer weight losses of up to 8% due to feed shortages. As a result, they are unable to effectively carry out farming operations at the beginning of the rainy season or to produce sufficient manure for household needs. Through the EWA-BELT project, we developed storage systems for cereal residues and optimised their use by preparing feed rations for draught animals, especially during periods of feed shortages. The technology package included the provision of supplementary rations of chopped sorghum stalks, seed cakes and licking stones to draft animals kept in enclosures overnight. This feeding regime improves the body weight of the draft animals by 11 % and enables them to carry out tillage operations at the start of the rainy season. In addition, it increases manure production by 37% contributing to soil amendment and the rehabilitation of degraded soils. The technological package developed by EWABELT promotes early seedbed preparation with vigorous draft animals and makes more and better-quality manure available at household level. Consequently, it promotes early sowing and enhances the resilience of farming systems to climatic variability.
