We build global capacity in essential data and computational skills for conducting efficient, open, and reproducible research. The Carpentries has a strong track record of introducing fundamental concepts and skills to those with no previous experience of computational approaches, but we cannot hope to meet all of the training needs of every community we engage with. Community members have been tackling this problem for many years, using the open source infrastructure we provide to build their own lessons teaching RSEng and other skills. The community is creating these lessons together in The Carpentries Incubator (egg logo above), which contains ~200 lesson projects. But these lessons still cover only a fraction of the whole space of RSEng training needs. Target Audience About the Training Learning Outcomes After attending Collaborative Lesson Development Training, participants will be able to collaboratively develop and publish open source lessons identify and characterise the target audience for a lesson define SMART learning objectives explain the pedagogical value of authentic tasks create exercises for formative assessment explain how considerations of cognitive load can influence lesson design configure and maintain lesson repositories that are open to collaboration identify and correct accessibility issues in a Carpentries lesson update and improve lesson material guided by feedback and reflection after teaching review and provide constructive feedback on lessons The Carpentries Instructor Training teaches people how to teach effectively. Many of the principles taught in Instructor Training are considerably easier to apply with the availability of well-designed curriculum. Collaborative Lesson Development Training equips community members with knowledge and skills to complement their Instructor Training. It is grounded in principles derived from research into how people learn and what makes curriculum effective. It teaches practical approaches to designing and developing a lesson, with an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility to support the positive learning environment that is so important in a workshop. The process of iterative backward design promoted by Collaborative Lesson Development Training. Participants are guided through the phases of this process: producing a complete outline for a lesson, developing some of the content, publishing it online, gathering feedback from teaching, and planning for further development and collaboration. The training takes place in two parts, separated by an extended break during which participants prepare for an deliver a trial run of some of their new lesson content.
