Research Data Management and Tools in NFDI4Energy – An Introduction for Early-Career Researchers
Abstract
This presentation provides an introduction to Research Data Management (RDM) in the context of the NFDI4Energy consortium. It is aimed at Master’s students and PhD researchers in the energy domain and highlights the importance of FAIR and open data for transparent, reproducible science. The talk gives an overview of RDM principles and presents selected tools developed within NFDI4Energy, including the Open Energy Platform (OEP), the Open Energy Database (OED), the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), and the Terminology Service.

What is Research Data Management (RDM)? •Definition •RDM includes all activities to organize, document, store, and share research data across the entire research process. •Goals •Make data findable & understandable •Increase quality, transparency & reproducibility •Enable reuse & collaboration •Fulfill funders’ & journals’ requirements 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 6
Reusable Research Artifacts •Principles to make research artifacts reusable by Wilkinson et al. NFDI4Energy Service Portfolio •Leibniz Data Manager •Terminology Service •Simulation-as-a-Service Hub •Research Data Management Course •Open Research Knowledge Graph •Open Energy Platform •Open Energy Database •Open Energy Databus •Open Energy Factsheets 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 17
Terminology Service •Conceptual representation of knowledge with relationships between concepts in lists of standard terms (classifications), and lexical tools that facilitate the search for terms. •Single point of access to terminologies from domains such as architecture, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics •Browse ontologies through the website or use its API to retrieve terminological information to use it in technical services 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 18
Domain Ontology Represents knowledge in the energy systems domain. Establishes groundwork for the other NFDI4Energy ontologies. Socio-Political Ontology Represents energy-relevant social and political policy factors. Energy Simulation Software Ontology Represents software for energy systems modeling & simulation. Simulation Scenario Ontology Represents energy systems modeling & simulation scenarios (including laboratory and hardware-in-the-loop testing) Long-Term Scenario Ontology Represents long-term energy system scenarios; standardizes scenario structure to simplify comparisons. Ontology Scope and Applications 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 19
Existing Ontology Investigation: Collection An NFDI4Energy Terminology Service collection now contains several existing energy ontologies. 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 20
Open Energy Platform •Open infrastructure to make energy system modelling transparent, reproducible, and collaborative. •Key purpose: share data, scenarios, models; provide tools and standards for openness. •Supports community engagement: uploading data, using open licenses, contributing ontology & scenario bundles. Database Upload, browse, download datasets under open license. Scenario Bundles Combine datasets, models, metadata to describe energy system scenarios. Ontology (Open Energy Ontology, OEO) Shared vocabulary & relationships to annotate and connect data. Academy Tutorials, courses, documentation to teach how to use OEP / OEF tools. 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 21
Open Energy Database •Purpose: •Central repository within OEP for structured, version-controlled, and validated energy datasets. •Supports both human and machine-readable data access via API. •Designed to ensure reproducibility and long-term availability of energy data. •Key Features: • FAIR-compliant metadata (schema.org, DCAT, etc.) • Version control for datasets • REST API access for integration with models and scripts • Data validation and quality checks • Open licensing 13.10.2025 NFDI4Energy 22
Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) •The ORKG is a digital infrastructure that represents scientific knowledge in a machine-readable, structured way. •Instead of just storing papers as text, it captures their core contributions (e.g., problem, method, results) as interlinked data. •Developed by the TIB Hannover, it is part of the NFDI4Energy ecosystem to enhance research transparency and comparability.
