They have been associated with several adverse health effects. To overcome the use of PFAS coatings in food packaging, the BIO-SUSHY project aims to replace them with bio-based alternatives comprising of safer polymers and bio-additives. To guarantee a safe and sustainable development of novel thermoplastic powder coatings for the packaging sector, detailed assessments of the toxicological and exposure analysis are conducted. Materials and Methods Results and Discussion Powder-coated paper substrates using PBS (above) and modified lignin (below). The first results on the contact angle measurements and KIT rating (grease resistance) of the coated papers using BIOSUSHY thermoplastic powder coatings are promising for food packaging applications. Membrane interactions of thermoplastic polymers (PBS and PHAs) and lignin and modified lignin analyzed using model membrane screening system. PBS and PHBV exhibited no significant membrane interactions and no essential difference in membrane interaction of lignin and modified lignin is observed. 1 3 2 PHAs and PBS are combined with green additives targeting grease resistance and water repellence of the papers. Four different grafting functions, carboxylic acid, phosphonic acid, Alkoxysilane, and Amine, were used for the chemical modification of lignin. •Contact angle measurements • Grease resistance (KIT rating according to ISO 16532-2 ) •Cobb tests Rapid coating and formulation screening using electrochemical membrane screening platform 0 25 50 75 100 125 Contact angle[ °] Water 0 3 6 9 12 KIT rating [Grease resistance] Paper substrate Modified Lignin PHBV PBS PHBH Lignin Hot forming Spray coating technology
