D9.3 Page 2 of 5 D9.3 Recommendations to strengthen the LEAPS co-creation process Work package 9 - “CO-CREATION - Innovation by Cocreation towards Global Challenges“ Lead Beneficiary: ULUND Objectives The objectives of this WP, as stated in the DoA are: The LEAPS-INNOV-Co-creation programme aims to extend the existing collaborations of the LEAPS partners towards areas of excellent science as applied to innovation and societal needs. New communities will engage as partners in science innovation, creating programmes, methods and technologies at LEAPS facilities. The needs of large European research initiatives such as European Partnerships will move research at LEAPS facilities closer to the end user, thus allowing addressing more directly the societal challenges, HE missions, creating innovation, and sustainability. The LEAPS consortium is predestined as a partner for European clusters addressing grand challenges, industry R&D needs and curiosity driven basic research. LEAPS-INNOV aims to establish co-creation structures allowing for joint development of key technologies, typically transversal to several scientific applications and missions, and continuous promotion and development of the user community, including joint development of novel science instruments. In order to meet these objectives, WP9 will • Establish a network of high-impact science consortia in Europe to identify new-areas for cocreation, develop a cocreation advisory forum and create a whitepaper “co-creation strategy” for LEAPS • Launch a small number of co-creation implementation studies addressing technology challenges collaboratively • Organise events addressing emergent science fields and addressing co-creation opportunities in these fields. Implementation Approach WP9’s activities have been structured using a systematic three-step methodology to achieve its objectives: 1. Workshops with Facility Representatives Initial workshops were organized with representatives from various LEAPS facilities to: o Explore research areas related to health, energy, and the environment. o Identify recurring user support requests and determine how these drive the need for further technical development. Deliverable no. D9.3 Page 3 of 5 o Map active user communities and networks relevant to all LEAPS facilities. 2. Co-Creation Workshops with Stakeholder Networks Co-creation workshops were held with external networks, including initiatives such as Treesearch, Battery2030+, and representatives from Volvo and Northvolt. These discussions focused on: o Addressing the primary challenges within these networks, spanning scientific topics and infrastructure needs (e.g., access to synchrotron facilities). 3. Topic-Focused Co-Creation Forums Specialized forums addressed pressing topics such as battery research and microscopy development. These events: o Facilitated collaborations between facility representatives, user communities, and industry partners. o Produced actionable roadmaps and defined next steps for addressing societal challenges collaboratively. Achievements The structured approach adopted by WP9 has proven effective in fostering co-creation activities on a LEAPS-wide scale. Notable achievements include: • Battery Research Advancements Progress in energy-related research began with workshops on energy topics, culminating in co-creation forums. These forums produced roadmaps for clean energy transitions, developed collaboratively with LEAPS facilities, user communities, and industry representatives. • Quantum Technology Momentum By leveraging LEAPS initiatives and pilot studies, WP9 created significant momentum within the quantum technology community. This effort led to the preparation of funding proposals and the realization of novel access models. • Microscopy Development Workshops revealed a strong demand for further development in microscopy techniques, particularly for health and environmental research. Strategic interest in this area, endorsed by the Innovation Advisory Board (IAB) and the Research Development Board (RDB), has positioned microscopy as a priority for LEAPS-scale initiatives. Deliverable no. D9.3 Page 4 of 5 Strategic Recommendations To amplify the impact of the LEAPS co-creation process and address societal challenges holistically, WP9 recommends extending this structured approach to additional research fields. The following strategies are proposed: 1. Holistic Collaboration Ensure all key players, including academia, industry, and research facilities, are engaged in addressing societal challenges on a European scale. 2. Scalable Methodologies Expand the co-creation methodology to emerging research topics, leveraging the collaborative frameworks established in WP9. 3. Long-Term Impact Institutionalize co-creation structures to sustain collaborations beyond the project’s duration, ensuring enduring societal and scientific benefits.
