Navigating and Improving the PID Landscape: A Call to Action for IHDEA Dr. Rebecca Ringuette Heliophysics Digital Resource Library at NASA Goddard PIDs PIDs Introduction for Persistent Identifiers "A digital identifier that is globally unique, persistent, machine resolvable and processable, and has an associated metadata schema." When to create a Persistent Identifier (PID)? ● Accurate and persistent citation or reference. ● Interlink between resources, people, or organizations. ● Automated tracking services. ● Give attribution to the correct authors. Needed to support FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) How to choose the correct identifier? International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) PIDs PID Landscape Datasets Software Instruments Platforms* Documents Physical Objects Research Projects And more… Grants Journal Articles Subsets Granules Snapshots People Organizations Facilities Funders Publishers International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) Plasmids Organisms Antibodies Generic Instruments When it all works together… Automated metadata population, Automated contribution tracking, Automated interlinking, Even when others lead! A Selection of Work for PID International Standards Research Data Alliance ● Metadata mappings between Schema.org and DataCite ● Complex Citation Objects - handling large numbers of citations ● Data repository best practices Earth Science Informatics Partners (ESIP) ● Guidelines for describing research datasets on Schema.org ● Connection to the Coalition on Publishing Data in the Earth and Space Sciences (COPDESS.org) FORCE11 ● Dataset citations with versions ● The citation challenge of dataset reference papers ● Accurate attribution Nothing in Heliophysics! https://www.rd-alliance.org/ https://www.esipfed.org/ https://force11.org/ What does Heliophysics need? ● Collaboration ○ Increase connection with existing efforts on data and metadata standards. ○ Purposeful interconnection with infrastructure for other types of PIDs, including detecting citation of those PIDs in peer-reviewed publications. ○ Contribution to existing infrastructure to improve existing gaps. ● Availability (FAIR) ○ Metadata that is richly interoperable with existing PIDs, their schema, and other existing international infrastructure. ○ Modernized dataset landing pages with embedded metadata to assist AI discovery tools. ● Reproducibility ○ Metadata mappings between SPASE and PID metadata implemented in open source software. ● Transparency ○ Open governance process to select the recommended PID(s) for various types of objects. YOU! PIDs PID Landscape Thank You Persistent Identifiers in the FAIR Guidelines ● The FAIR guidelines are for data and their metadata, can be generalized. ● Globally unique - no other item in the world uses the same identifier. ● Persistent - actively maintained by an organization long term. ● Included in the item’s metadata for user confirmation. ● Provide access to the item, typically on the landing page the PID directs to.
