Date format: DD/MM/YYYY, S1W1 = Study 1 Wave 1 (all other study waves are abbreviated analogously). S1W1 TIMELINE On March 8, 2020, German Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn officially suggested to cancel all public events with more than 1,000 people. Furthermore, the first German death case related to the coronavirus was registered on this date1. Thus, March 8, 2020 can reasonably be labelled as the “beginning” of greater public realization of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Note. ESM report = completed ESM (i.e., state) survey, S1W1 = Study 1 Wave 1. NOTES ON THE DATA SETS The trait data set of S1W1 subsumes trait measures administered in S1W1 only. Thus, each row corresponds to a unique participant. The state data set of S1W1 subsumes state and trait measures administered in S1W1. Thus, data is provided in long format (i.e., with one row of data per ESM report). We excluded data from the trait and state data set in the cases of (a) disagreement with conditions of participation, (b) missing data on all relevant variables, (c) participants under minimum required age, (d) test users, (e) duplicates. Moreover, we applied three additional exclusion criteria uniquely to the state data set, namely (f) incomplete state surveys, (g) state surveys completed too close to each other, and (h) state surveys sent out during the night on January 14, 2020, due to a technical error. For details on data exclusion, please refer to Section 2.4.2 of our data paper (Ryvkina et al., 20222). Moreover, from the trait and state data set shared on OSF, we removed the following variables for the sake of data anonymization: code, gender, gender_specification, age, higher_ed_semester, higher_ed_field. However, except for code, all excluded variables can be explicitly requested. 1 Tagesschau (2020, April 17). Ihr EMOTIONS-Team Dear participant, Welcome to the EMOTIONS study! Thank you very much for choosing to participate in our study. With the help of the EMOTIONS study we would like to investigate social experiences in everyday life. To investigate this question, you will complete a short questionnaire in the EMOTIONS app several times a day for two weeks. Immediately following the study and at its conclusion after two weeks, you will also complete a questionnaire on attitudes and selfdescriptions. If you complete at least 50% of the questionnaires sent in, you will receive 6 test person hours. There is also a bonus for regular completion: If you complete more than 80% of the questionnaires sent in, you will receive 4 additional test person hours (10 test person hours in total), and you will be entered in the prize draw for 25 Amazon vouchers worth 50 euros each. After completion of the study, all participants will receive comprehensive feedback on their emotional well-being in everyday social life. If you have any questions or problems, please do not hesitate to send us an email at emotion[email protected]. We appreciate your interest and support. On the following pages we ask you to answer general questions about attitudes and self-descriptions. There are no right and wrong answers, what is of relevance are your personal evaluations. Please find below a list of all measures assessed at T2 after the introduction. Their respective items (labelled with an additional “_t2” suffix to signify the time of assessment) can be found in the codebook sections for T1 above. 1. IAL 2. NARQ 3. RSES 4. Thank you very much for your successful participation! Your EMOTIONS team DATA QUALITY CONTROL In addition to data exclusion, we performed data quality checks to scrutinize the trait and state data set for conspicuous responding. In particular, we identified outliers10 on various data quality metrics, namely intraindividual response variability (IRV), longstring, trait and state survey completion time, and responses to variables with open answer format. The variables associated with each data quality check (e.g., the data quality metric itself and a variable flagging outliers on the respective data quality metric) are listed in the following. For further details on data quality control, see Section 2.6 and Table S4 in the Supplemtental Material of Ryvkina et al. (2022). Participant-oriented data quality control on trait measures IRV, longstring, trait survey completion time irv_ial_t1 IRV on the IAL at T1 10 Whenever we speak of outliers in the context of the data quality checks, we mean potential outliers only.
