Objectives The aim of the BIO-SUSHY project is to replace PFAS components in various case studies, including textiles. Indeed, PFAS are used in the textile industry to provide functional properties such as water and/or oil repellence, stain resistance, soil protection to textile products, including home textiles. This deliverable D2.3’s objective is to provide one or several PFAs-free hybrid water-based coatings with high organic content for water and oil repellent properties in textile applications. The formulations and ultimately the coated samples should meet several requirements to be acceptable and competitive on every aspect of the value chain. The main objective associated with the BIO-SUSHY project is to reach both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties while refraining from using any fluorinated compound which includes PFAS. The textile industry presents very specific requirements to the development of such a finishing formulation. Indeed, given the global state of textile production in Europe and its competition with regions such as Asia, the industrial stakeholders rely on proven finishing processes and don’t intend or have the means to invest on new machinery. The dip-pad-dry-cure method of finishing is the most common one in textile finishing, hence the BIOSUSHY formulation needs to be applicable using this process. This method in particular leads to a certain number of specifications that make it worth considering by the industry. First and foremost, the solvent used in large amounts is water, as dipping is done in an open bath and unwanted vapours could harm nearby workers. For the same reasons and to also protect the end users and environment from potential release, the formulations has avoid Carcinogenic, Mutagnic and reprotoxic (CMR) chemicals and metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd…). A study using the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework done by ITENE can provide data on the safety of a formulation. To enhance the benefits of to this formulation, we aim for a dry matter content that exceed that 25% bio-based. Finally, the textile field has its own requirements for the final product once the formulation is applied. It should not affect the fabric’s colour and touch and it should withstand around 10 washing cycles (depending on the nature of the product) without modifying any property (hydro/oleophobicity, colour, touch, dimension). IFTH has developed 2 formulations (namely Depersol and Depersol-Green) and Applus Rescoll has developed one (Pearlisol) that meet several of the characteristics mentioned and will present them in the following document. Most of these requirements can be summed up in the following table. 9 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content Table 1: Textile case study specifications BIO-SUSHY Coating material % Biobased Ratio inorganic/organic Solvent Application process Hybrid waterbased coating Formulation content: up to 30% Up to 25/75 ratio Water Padding, fast curing; 3-5 min at 100-195°C 2. Description 2.1. General characteristics of the demonstrators 2.1.1. Applus Rescoll formulation BIO-SUSHY aims to develop 3 PFAS-free coating materials, partially or fully bio-based, to be validated in 3 case studies (textile, food trays, glass packaging). Regarding the textile case study, the demonstrator is based on hybrid water-based sol-gel technology with high organic content. This demonstrator includes two elements: • Liquid part, a two components repellent solution (Pearlisol), • Solid part, a polyester fabric coated with this solution The liquid parts are stored in sealed glass containers (inert) and remain usable for at least 4 hours once all the different parts have been incorporated. The second part of this demonstrator consists of a polyester textile fabric of A4 size (21cm x 29.7cm) coated with one layer of Pearlisol (the water and oil-repellent solution). 2.1.2. IFTH formulations Two demonstrators (Depersol and Depersol-Green) are presented here as one shows slightly better hydrophobicity results and the other fulfils the bio-based requirement. These demonstrators are made of two elements provided in the same way as described in Applus Rescoll’s part: o A two-component (2K) liquid solution providing water repellency stored in separate glass bottles and usable for a few hours once mixed o A woven polyester substrate of A4 dimensions (21x29.7cm) coated with the activated solution 16 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content Figure 8: Spray test score on Pearlisol coated polyester fabrics with ageing 2.3.2. IFTH formulations 2.3.2.1. General information Both coatings are applied using the industrially common dip-pad-dry-cure technique as described in Figure 10. Figure 9: IFTH's dip-pad-dry-cure semi-industrial process The main steps of this process are, as its name suggests: - Dipping of the fabric for a few seconds in a bath of the coating formulation - Application with a roll padder having a pressure between 2 and 4 bars - Drying/curing in drying tenter above 120°C for up to 3 minutes The processing parameters are similar for both Depersol and Depersol-Green. 0 1 2 3 4 5 0W 1W 2W 5W 10W Spray test score (/5) Pearlisol t0 Pearlisol after 7month Pearlisol after 8month Pearlisol after 9month 17 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content The sample’s mass was monitored throughout every step of the application. This allowed us to determine the pick-up rate of the fabric after padding and the dry matter content left after curing. Figure 10: Polyester fabric with/without Depersol coating 18 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content Figure 11: Polyester fabric with/without Depersol-Green coating 2.3.2.2. Performances The best way to assess water repellency performances in a textile setting is through standard ISO4920, also referred to as “spray test”. This standard uses the device presented in Figure 12. A known amount of water is spread evenly on the textile and the resulting water pattern on the fabric is visually assessed and compared to a standardized table, resulting in a 0 to 5 grade, 5 being no water left at all and 0 being a completely soaked textile on each side. Figure 12: ISO4920 Spray test device 19 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content Washing resistance being crucial for commercial purposes, all samples were tested after up to 10 washing cycles referred to as 0W to 10W performed using standard ISO6330 (1h, 40°C programme). The spray test results are shown in the following figures (Figure 13 and Figure 14) Figure 13: Depersol spray test from 0 to 10 washing cycles Figure 14: Depersol-Green spray test from 0 to 10 washing cycles These results show that coatings perform better when washed once, bringing even Depersol-Green from a score of 0 to a score of 2,5. For both formulations, spray scores fluctuate from 2 to 3 throughout 1 to 10 washing cycles, displaying a remarkable stability. 0 1 2 3 4 5 Polyester Spray score (/5) 0W 1W 2W 5W 10W 0 1 2 3 4 5 Polyester Spray score (/5) 0W 1W 2W 5W 10W 20 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content The following figures show water beads on 10 times washed Depersol and Depersol-Green coated polyesters. Toxicity testing Every component used in the different formulations was assessed by ITENE according to the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) European framework (Figure 17) Figure 17: SSbD detailed approach 21 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content 3.1. Applus Rescoll formulation A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) was edited, and revealed an absence of hazard classifications, risk phrases, or warning pictograms (SDS available in appendix of this document). First step of SSbD approach focused on intrinsic hazard characterization, classified the Pearlisol formulation as level 2 (medium risk), indicating that compositional optimization of select components would enhance safety profile. Second evaluation parameters examining occupational health safety considerations demonstrated that 50% of constituents within the Pearlisol solution were classified at level 2 (medium risk). It should be noted that this categorization exhibits dependence on process-related hazard assessment outcomes, which could potentially induce a reclassification to level 3 (low risk). 3.2. IFTH formulations The results for the first two steps are satisfactory, as only one component used in very low amounts is flagged as needing to be substituted if possible in step 1, the same chemical is the only one listed as “medium risk” in step 2. Cytotoxicity studies were performed on the Depersol formulation by ITENE and shown in the table 8. Table 8: Cytotoxicity values for Depersol formulation These results show no toxicity on the selected set of cells and can be compared and added to the testing done by the University of Leeds on their custom membrane reacting to chemicals. The following table shows the peak suppression (PS) percentage, which is dependent on the reactivity of their membrane with potentially harmful chemicals. Table 9: University of Leeds' membrane reactivity on Depersol coated polyester Cell viability Sample EC50 A549 Depersol >100 ppm CaCo-2 Depersol >100 ppm HaCaT Depersol >100 ppm Substrate pH Temperature (°C) Time (h) Coating PS (%) Control PS (%) Depersol coated polyester 11 60 24 1,05 3,7 20 24 11,7 5,6 60 2 6,87 3,7 20 2 5,2 3,7 22 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content These results show that the Depersol coating doesn’t seem harmful and can be considered safe for now. Should this formulation be the final one of the BIO-SUSHY project, further testing will be required. 4. Conclusion 4.1. Applus Rescoll A partially bio-based hybrid sol-gel coating (28% according to standard EN 16785-1), the Pearlisol solution, free from PFAS has been developed. This coating demonstrates promising hydrophobic properties, as quantified by goniometer measurements and evaluated through spray testing according to ISO 4920 standard, as well as oleophobic properties measured through contact angle measurements using domestic oily products. The investigation was extended to additional textiles to assess the performance capabilities of the coating. Polyester/cotton blend and cotton-based fabrics exhibited hydrophobic and oleophobic properties following padding with the Pearlisol solution, achieving contact angles of approximately 130° and oil repellency properties. The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) approach enabled the formulation of a composition free from eternal pollutant and hazard pictograms, while simultaneously accounting for the product's life cycle assessment, which is currently in progress. The subsequent phase of the project aims to evaluate the scalability of this coating technology through optimization of coating adhesion to textile substrates and enhancement of solution stability. 4.2. IFTH Two water-based hybrid sol-gel formulations without fluorinated compounds, Depersol and Depersol-Green, applicable on polyester using the industrially common dip-pad-dry-cure technique, were successfully developed. The hydrophobic properties were characterized using ISO4920 and displayed promising results and good resistance to laundering. The change of one precursor to a bio-based one synthesized by SiKEMIA allowed to double the biobased content from 23% (Depersol) to 46% (Depersol-Green) according to standard EN 16785-1. These solutions are simultaneously tested on different fabrics (cotton and a polyester/cotton blend) in order to determine if the formulations can accommodate a broader range of applications. For now, the results indicate better performance on polyester substrates. As mentioned by Rescoll, the SSbD analysis is still ongoing for all our formulations as well as a life cycle analysis. Following this formulation development, a semi-industrial scale is targeted, meaning work will be done on the process and formulation optimization. 23 of 23 Sustainable surface protection by glass-like hybrid and biomaterials coatings D.2.3: One hybrid water-based coating with high organic content 5.
