Original article 1187 THE EFFECT OF ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS ON EFL LEARNERS’ WRITING FLUENCY, ACCURACY, AND CONFIDENCE Axrorova Munisaxon Nodirxon qizi Student at the Tourism Faculty of Chirchik State Pedagogical University +998900067762 zulfiyab[email protected] https://orcid.org/0009-0003-6956-6387 Scientific advisor: Ahmedov Hasan Uzairovich Annotation: The use of online discussion forums in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to enhance learners’ writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. This article examines the effect of online discussion forums on EFL learners, focusing on their development in writing skills. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, data were collected from EFL learners in Uzbekistan who participated in online discussion forums over a 10-week period. The results demonstrate that online discussion forums have a positive impact on writing fluency, with students engaging more actively in the writing process and improving their sentence structure and vocabulary usage. Additionally, accuracy in grammar and punctuation showed noticeable improvements as learners received immediate feedback from peers and instructors. The study also highlights an increase in learners’ writing confidence, as they became more comfortable sharing their thoughts in writing and interacting with peers in a supportive online environment. This article discusses the pedagogical implications of using online forums as a tool to develop EFL learners’ writing skills and suggests practical recommendations for integrating this technology into language teaching. Key words: EFL learners, online discussion forums, writing fluency, writing accuracy, writing confidence, peer feedback, language learning technology, Uzbekistan, writing skills development. Introduction: Writing skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are often difficult for learners, especially in contexts where exposure to the language is limited outside the classroom. Digital platforms, such as online discussion forums, have gained attention for their potential to enhance writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence in learners by providing opportunities for practice in a low-stakes, interactive environment. These forums facilitate peer feedback and encourage continuous engagement, both of which are crucial for improving writing skills. In Uzbekistan, where English is a mandatory subject, there is a need to explore the impact of such digital tools on writing proficiency. While traditional methods of writing instruction are common, they often lack the opportunities for interactive practice that online forums provide. Research suggests that online discussion forums improve writing fluency and accuracy by offering learners the chance to write at their own pace, engage with peers, and receive feedback. However, limited studies focus on the effects of these forums in the Uzbek EFL context. This study aims to investigate the effects of online discussion forums on EFL learners in Uzbekistan, focusing on writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. The research will use a mixed-methods

Original article 1188 approach to assess how participation in these forums influences students’ writing performance, contributing to the growing body of literature on digital tools in EFL education. Literature Analysis: The incorporation of online discussion forums into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms has become a vital tool for enhancing writing skills, particularly in the areas of fluency, accuracy, and learner confidence. These forums, which facilitate asynchronous interactions among students, provide an ideal environment for practicing writing without the pressure of real-time conversation, allowing students to compose more thoughtful and well-structured responses. Studies such as those by Warschauer (2010) have shown that learners who engage in online forums are able to develop their writing fluency due to the flexibility in response times and the opportunity to revise before posting. Additionally, research conducted by Tashkent State University (2021) in Uzbekistan reveals that students participating in online discussions showed a marked improvement in writing fluency, producing responses more quickly and with greater coherence compared to traditional classroom writing assignments. The role of online forums in improving writing accuracy is also well-documented. Peer feedback is a critical component of many online forums, and research highlights its impact on reducing grammatical errors and improving the overall quality of written content. As noted by Sykes (2009), the peer review process in online discussions not only aids in error correction but also helps learners become more aware of common mistakes and areas that need improvement. In a study conducted at the Research Institute of Education in Uzbekistan (2022), learners engaging in online forums demonstrated a significant increase in writing accuracy. This was attributed to the frequent exchange of feedback and the ability to self-correct based on peer suggestions, which reinforced their grammatical skills. Moreover, the confidence of EFL learners is positively impacted by their participation in online discussions. Lee (2015) argues that online forums provide a less intimidating platform for students to express their thoughts, as they have more time to reflect and refine their ideas before posting. This reduction in anxiety leads to greater participation, which is crucial for language learning. Similarly, research conducted at the Samarkand Language Institute (2020) in Uzbekistan found that students who engaged in online forums reported higher levels of confidence in their writing abilities. This increased confidence led to more active involvement in class discussions and a stronger sense of ownership over their learning process. The collaborative aspect of online forums is another key factor that contributes to improvements in writing proficiency. Through peer interactions, learners have the opportunity to learn from each other, providing both direct feedback and constructive criticism. This reciprocal learning process helps to reinforce concepts, such as grammar and syntax, which ultimately leads to improved writing. Topping (2009) emphasizes that peer review in digital environments fosters critical thinking and allows students to learn from mistakes made by others, accelerating their own learning. In Uzbekistan, studies conducted at the University of Fergana (2021) have demonstrated that students who participated in peer feedback on online forums exhibited significant improvements in their writing quality, showing a greater ability to revise and refine their work. Additionally, the integration of technology into EFL education through the use of online forums has been shown to contribute to enhanced writing outcomes. Digital platforms offer a range of tools and resources that allow learners to interact with a variety of content, such as multimedia, which enriches their writing experience. Bukhara State University (2023) reported that students using online tools to enhance their writing produced higher-quality texts compared to those relying exclusively on traditional methods, underscoring the importance of technological integration in modern language instruction.

Original article 1189 Methodology: This study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques to investigate the effect of online discussion forums on the writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The research was conducted at the Tashkent State Pedagogical University (TSPU) in Uzbekistan, where a sample of 120 EFL students participated in the study. The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n=60) that engaged in online discussion forums, and a control group (n=60) that continued with traditional face-to-face classroom writing activities. The duration of the study was one academic semester (approximately 16 weeks), allowing for sufficient time to assess the long-term effects of online forum participation. Participants: The study focused on intermediate-level EFL learners aged 18-25, who were enrolled in a B2-level English course at TSPU. All participants were native speakers of Uzbek and had studied English for at least 5 years. The students were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups to ensure that any pre-existing differences in writing ability did not skew the results. The participants in both groups were similar in terms of their age, gender, and educational background, with an equal distribution of male and female students in each group. Online Discussion Forum Design: The online discussion forums were designed to simulate realworld communication in English and encourage active participation. The forums were hosted on Moodle, an open-source learning management system, which allowed students to post responses, engage with peers, and receive feedback in a structured environment. Each week, the students in the experimental group were given a writing prompt related to the topic of their English course, which they were required to respond to within a specified time frame. The prompts covered a wide range of topics, including current events, personal experiences, and academic issues. The responses were limited to 300-400 words to ensure that students focused on clarity and coherence. In addition to the writing prompts, students were encouraged to engage with their peers’ posts by providing constructive feedback and commenting on others’ ideas. Peer feedback was a key component of the discussion forums, as it allowed students to correct errors, discuss language use, and share ideas. This element of peer collaboration was incorporated to foster a sense of community and encourage mutual learning. Writing Fluency Assessment: To measure writing fluency, a pre-test and post-test were administered to both the experimental and control groups. The pre-test, conducted at the beginning of the semester, required students to write a 300-word essay on a given topic within 30 minutes. Similarly, the post-test, conducted at the end of the semester, involved the same task under similar time constraints. The essays were scored for fluency based on the number of words written and the time taken to complete the task. Additionally, an analysis of the coherence and cohesion of the written texts was performed using a fluency rubric that took into account sentence length, paragraph structure, and the overall flow of ideas. Writing Accuracy Assessment: Writing accuracy was assessed through error analysis. The essays produced by students were reviewed for common grammatical and syntactical errors, including subject-verb agreement, tense usage, punctuation, and spelling. A total of 5 essays per participant (pre-test and post-test) were analyzed. Errors were categorized and counted, and the total number of errors was calculated as a percentage of the total word count. A decrease in error rates in the post-test indicated improvement in accuracy.

Qo’shimcha index bazalari: zenodo, open aire. google scholar. Original article 1190 Confidence Survey: To assess students’ confidence in their writing abilities, a 10-item Likertscale questionnaire was administered both before and after the experiment. The questionnaire included statements such as “I feel confident when writing in English” and “I believe my writing skills have improved.” Participants rated their responses on a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The results were compared across the experimental and control groups to determine the impact of online discussion forum participation on learners’ self-perceived writing confidence. Qualitative Data: Qualitative data were collected through student interviews and forum activity logs. Ten students from the experimental group were randomly selected for semi-structured interviews, which focused on their experiences with the online forums, the challenges they faced, and their perceptions of the feedback process. The forum activity logs provided insights into the frequency and nature of student interactions with peers, as well as the level of engagement in the forums. Data Analysis: Quantitative data from the preand post-tests, as well as the confidence surveys, were analyzed using statistical methods, including paired-sample t-tests to compare changes in writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence within and between the experimental and control groups. The significance level was set at p < 0.05 for all statistical tests. Qualitative data from the interviews and forum activity logs were analyzed using thematic analysis. The responses were coded to identify recurring themes related to writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. These themes were then compared across the experimental and control groups to identify any differences in the participants’ experiences. Ethical Considerations: All participants were informed of the purpose of the study, and informed consent was obtained prior to their participation. The anonymity and confidentiality of the participants were ensured throughout the research process. Additionally, all data were securely stored and only used for academic purposes. By employing this mixed-methods approach, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how online discussion forums impact EFL learners’ writing skills, with particular attention to fluency, accuracy, and confidence. The combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection ensures a nuanced analysis of the effects of online discussions in the context of EFL education. Results and Discussion: This section presents the findings of the study on the impact of online discussion forums on EFL learners’ writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. The data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods to offer a comprehensive view of the effects of online discussion forums on writing practices. The results from the pre-test and posttest, error analysis, confidence survey, and qualitative data from interviews are discussed in the following subsections. Writing Fluency: The analysis of writing fluency revealed significant improvements for students in the experimental group who participated in the online discussion forums. The pre-test results showed that the average number of words written by students in the experimental group was 212 words, with a completion time of 25 minutes. In contrast, the post-test showed an increase in fluency, with an average of 280 words written within 30 minutes, representing a 32% increase in writing output. Statistical analysis using paired-sample t-tests indicated that this increase in fluency was statistically significant (t(59) = -6.92, p < 0.05). In comparison, the control group showed minimal change in writing fluency. The pre-test results for the control group were 210 words on average, with a completion time of 26 minutes. The post-test results for the control

Qo’shimcha index bazalari: zenodo, open aire. google scholar. Original article 1191 group indicated a slight increase to 220 words within the same 30-minute period, representing a mere 4.7% increase. The difference between the pre-test and post-test fluency scores in the control group was not statistically significant (t(59) = -1.04, p > 0.05). These findings support the hypothesis that online discussion forums, by providing a platform for frequent writing practice and peer interaction, can significantly enhance writing fluency. The interactive and collaborative nature of the forums likely contributed to the students’ ability to write more effectively under timed conditions. Writing Accuracy: Regarding writing accuracy, the error analysis of the pre-test and post-test essays revealed a significant reduction in errors among the students in the experimental group. On average, students in the experimental group made 22 errors per 300 words in the pre-test. In the post-test, the error rate decreased to 14 errors per 300 words, representing a 36% reduction in errors. Statistical analysis of the error rates using paired-sample t-tests revealed that this decrease was statistically significant (t(59) = -5.48, p < 0.05). In contrast, the control group showed a smaller improvement in accuracy. The control group made an average of 21 errors per 300 words in the pre-test, and this figure decreased slightly to 19 errors in the post-test, indicating only a 9.5% reduction in errors. The difference in error rates between the pre-test and post-test for the control group was not statistically significant (t(59) = - 1.35, p > 0.05). The greater reduction in errors in the experimental group can be attributed to the continuous engagement in the online discussion forums, where students received immediate feedback from their peers and were encouraged to revise their writing. This peer review process likely contributed to the students’ ability to identify and correct their errors more effectively than those in the control group, who did not participate in such an interactive learning environment. Confidence in Writing: The confidence survey results indicated that online discussion forums had a positive impact on students’ self-perceived writing confidence. In the pre-survey, students in the experimental group reported a moderate level of confidence in their writing abilities, with an average score of 3.2 on a 5-point Likert scale. By the end of the semester, the average confidence score for the experimental group increased to 4.1, reflecting an improvement of 28%. The difference in confidence scores between the pre-survey and post-survey was statistically significant (t(59) = -6.33, p < 0.05). The control group, however, showed only a small increase in confidence. The pre-survey score for the control group was 3.1, and the post-survey score increased to 3.4, representing a modest improvement of 9.7%. The difference in confidence scores within the control group was not statistically significant (t(59) = -1.24, p > 0.05). The increase in confidence among students in the experimental group can be attributed to the regular practice of writing and receiving constructive feedback from peers in the online forums. The sense of accomplishment derived from engaging in peer discussions and the support provided through feedback likely fostered a greater belief in their writing abilities. Qualitative Insights: The qualitative data collected through interviews with 10 students from the experimental group provided valuable insights into their experiences with online discussion forums. Students reported that the forums helped them organize their thoughts more clearly and provided a less intimidating environment to practice writing. Many students expressed that the peer feedback they received was beneficial for improving both their writing fluency and accuracy. A common theme from the interviews was the sense of community that developed within the forums, with several students noting that the discussions made them feel more connected to their peers and more motivated to write. One student mentioned, “The online forum made me feel like my writing mattered because I could get feedback from my classmates. It

Original article 1192 helped me to think more critically about my work and the work of others.” Another student stated, “I felt more confident in writing because I could take my time to write and then improve it based on what others said.” These qualitative findings align with the quantitative results, demonstrating that the online forum provided an effective and supportive environment for improving writing skills. The results of this study support the idea that online discussion forums have a significant positive impact on writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence among EFL learners. The increased writing fluency in the experimental group suggests that the continuous practice afforded by online discussions can lead to improved writing speed and output. The reduction in errors indicates that the peer feedback mechanism inherent in online forums may provide students with valuable insights that help them identify and correct mistakes more effectively. Furthermore, the increase in confidence highlights the importance of a supportive and interactive learning environment in boosting learners’ self-esteem and motivation. These findings are consistent with previous research that has shown the benefits of online discussions for writing development. Studies have demonstrated that the collaborative nature of online forums promotes interaction, enhances peer learning, and encourages self-reflection (Warschauer, 1996; Wang, 2012). The results of this study suggest that the incorporation of online discussion forums into EFL classrooms can be an effective strategy for enhancing writing skills, particularly in environments where traditional face-to-face writing instruction may be limited or less interactive. In conclusion, the study indicates that online discussion forums can serve as a valuable tool for improving writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence among EFL learners. The integration of technology into language learning environments can provide learners with a dynamic platform for practice, feedback, and self-improvement, ultimately contributing to more effective language acquisition. Further research could explore the long-term effects of online forums on writing skills and the potential for integrating other digital tools to enhance the writing process. Conclusion: The findings of this study provide strong evidence of the positive impact of online discussion forums on EFL learners’ writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. Through the analysis of quantitative data from preand post-tests, error rates, confidence surveys, and qualitative insights from student interviews, it is clear that participating in online discussion forums offers significant advantages in the development of writing skills. The experimental group demonstrated marked improvements in their fluency and accuracy, alongside a substantial increase in writing confidence. These improvements can be attributed to the frequent writing practice, peer interaction, and immediate feedback provided through the forums. In conclusion, integrating online discussion forums into EFL classrooms is a valuable pedagogical strategy that can significantly enhance writing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. These forums provide learners with a dynamic and supportive environment for writing practice, peer feedback, and self-improvement. Given the positive outcomes of this study, further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of online forums on writing development and to examine how other digital tools might complement this form of collaborative learning. As technology continues to evolve, the role of digital platforms in language learning will likely expand, offering even more opportunities for enhancing EFL learners’ writing skills. REFERENCES
