How to express obligation in English. SDGE of the Egramint project

Garcia-Pastor, Maria Dolores

Abstract

This didactic sequence, designed for 4º ESO students of English as a foreign language, focuses on developing communicative competence in expressing obligation, advice, prohibition, and warnings. Using modal verbs and imperatives, students learn to perform these functions within everyday contexts related to travel and transport. The sequence unfolds in three phases: (1) Observation, where learners analyze authentic examples and identify communicative intentions; (2) Investigation, where they contrast forms such as must, have to, should, can’t, mustn’t and imperatives, exploring differences in force and comparing English with Spanish; and (3) Reflection and Production, where students consolidate knowledge by scripting dialogues, classifying language forms, and collaboratively creating a TikTok video that demonstrates appropriate use of the target structures. Through contextualized tasks, multimodal resources, and cross-linguistic reflection, the sequence promotes accuracy, metalinguistic awareness, learner autonomy, and creativity in foreign language learning.

Out of loneliness and despair, he dehibernates a female passenger, Aurora. Both fall in love, and enjoy the spaceship talking to the robot Arthur.
