Open Research Data at Helmholtz

Schrader, Antonia

Abstract

This presentation focused on open research data — data that can be used, reused and redistributed freely by anyone — as a key aspect of open science practices. The benefits of making data openly accessible and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) for researchers and the scientific community will be discussed. The Helmholtz Association actively supports this cultural shift towards open and FAIR data by providing robust FAIR data infrastructures (via HMC and strategic support to NFDI) and clear research data policies. This makes it easier for valuable datasets created by Helmholtz researchers to be shared and combined within the global scientific community, maximising their impact.

Open Science consistently employs digitization to make all components of the scientific process (publications, research data, research software, etc.) ○ open, ○ traceable, ○ reusable, and ○ accessible to everyone. UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science https://doi.org/10.54677/MNMH8546 https://os.helmholtz.de 5 Context Research Data Management Research Data Management (RDM) [def] covers how research data can be stored, described and reused. RDM is the prerequisite for Open Research Data. Open Research Data Open Research Data, is a desired outcome (an output) of the RDM process and a central element of Open Science. “Open data refers to data that is openly accessible on the internet and may be used (or reused) by third parties.” forschungsdaten.info https://os.helmholtz.de 6 FAIR Source https://forschungsdaten.info/themen/veroeffentlichen-und-archivieren/faire-daten/. Adhering to the FAIR principles enables the validation of research results. b. Strengthens scientific integrity and public trust in research findings ●Efficiency and Acceleration: a. Avoid unnecessary duplication of effort in data collection b. Speed up the research processes ●Interoperability and Data Synergy: a. The Use of a common semantic language enhanced the combination of different datasets. https://os.helmholtz.de 9 Benefits: Boosting Researcher Recognition and Collaboration ●Citation and Attribution: a. Datasets receive persistent identifiers (e.g., DOIs), which make them citable and an independent research output b. Enable unambiguous attribution ●Collaboration and Reuse: a. Openly licensed data removes legal barriers b. build upon existing work, fostering new collaborations and accelerating collective knowledge generation ●Meeting Requirements: a. of research funding organizers and publishers https://os.helmholtz.de 16 Policies Policies of the Helmholtz Centers •Example: HZDR •Overview: In July 2025, 17 out of 18 Centers have their own research data policy. https://os.helmholtz.de 17 Core Topic Open Research Data Policies HIDS Data-Infrastruct ures Support Incentives Networks Persistent Identifiers https://os.helmholtz.de 18 Core Topic Open Research Data Policies HIDS Data-Infrastruct ures Support Incentives Networks Persistent Identifiers https://os.helmholtz.de 19 Open Research Data NFDI Participation •Numerous consortia of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) are being implemented with substantial Helmholtz participation. •All Helmholtz Centers are members of the NFDI. https://os.helmholtz.de/en/open-research-data/helmholtz-in-the-nfdi/ https://os.helmholtz.de 20 Open Research Data EOSC Participation •The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) has been started in 2015 as a project of the European Commission to make it easier for European researchers to access scientific data, platforms, and services for data processing. •Participation of Helmholtz Centers in 6 ongoing EOSC projects (Sept. 2025): EVERSE: HZDR O.S.C.A.R.S: DESY, FZJ AquaINFRA: Hereon, KIT Blue-Cloud 2026: AWI EOSC-Beyond: DESY, FZJ, KIT EOSC data commons: FZJ https://os.helmholtz.de 21 Research Data Repositories and Portals at Helmholtz •re3data – Registry of Research Data Repositories is an internationally recognized verification tool for research data repositories •The Helmholtz Open Science Office is a co-founder of the service. •In July 2025, re3data lists over 3400 research data repositories. •The Helmholtz Centers operate 138 data infrastructures in the Association in which unique and valuable digital research data is curated (status 05/2025). https://os.helmholtz.de/en/open-research-data/research-data-repositories Open Research Data https://os.helmholtz.de 22 Core Topic Open Research Data Policies HIDS Data-Infrastruct ures Support Incentives Networks Persistent Identifiers https://os.helmholtz.de 23 Core Topic Open Research Data Policies HIDS Data-Infrastruct ures Support Incentives Networks Persistent Identifiers https://os.helmholtz.de 24 ●PID4NFDI is currently funded in the integration phase as part of Base4NFDI. ● Objective: consolidate and evolve PID service landscape within NFDI at all levels: technical, organisational, methodological, and in communication ○ integrate existing PID infrastructures ○ improve metadata quality and mapping ○ training & outreach ○ support PID integration in consortia according to needs ○ align with national and international PID strategies and policies ● Close cooperation between PID4NFDI and the PID Network Germany PID4NFDI Basic Services for NFDI https://os.helmholtz.de 25 PID Network Deutschland DFG Project Objective: Establishment of a network of existing and new actors in science and culture to promote and consolidate the application, implementation, standardization and international networking of PID systems at local, national and international level and development of a national PID roadmap.
