Dr. Fabian Kohlmann –Managing Director, Lithodat, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA Empowering FAIR Geoscience: How DataCite Enables AuScope EarthBank & Lithodat Platforms
Our Mission: Easy access to FAIR global spatial geoscience data Our Vision: Creating data driven geoscience stories on the fly Mission and Vision
Who We Are •Global geoscience data specialists based in Melbourne, Australia with subsidiaries in Hermosillo, Mexico and Dublin, Ireland. •Trusted by national government geological surveys. •Serving Tier 1 Mining companies globally. •Provider of unique powerful, cloudhosted platforms for spatial geoscience data discovery, integration, analytics and dissemination.
Bespoke Data Platform Solutions Our Current Data Platforms: Earthbank: Global academic portal for FAIR geoscience data Isotope.au: Stable isotope data platform with Australian Government: CSIRO, Geoscience Australia & ANSTO Natural Resources Canada: Custom database and model for public geochemical data LithoSpace.com: Data platform for FAIR space geochemistry data from NASA, Russian and Chinese space missions.
Data Siloes and Data Standardisation
Common Problem: Siloed & Unstructured Data
Standardising & De-Siloing Public Data data is helping to standardise and make public domain data FAIR working together with academia, industry and government organisations. Public domain and academic data Collate, Digitise, Clean, QC, Structure Integrate in ONE relational database & interactive analytics platform
Robust data models Excel or API importers Searchable consistent data Data Standardisation via Data Models
Dashboards on-the-fly for fast Data Insights

FAIR Geoscience Data
© 2 019 Lithodat. All rights reserved. Data is easily discoverable, searchable and findable spatially as well as in the data packages. IGSNs and DOIs are crucial. 18 EarthBank & FAIR data: Findable
19 EarthBank & FAIR data: Accessible EarthBank EXCEL Uploader helps simplify and accelerate the way researchers can upload and standardise geochemical data across various data models into EarthBank. Enhancing the Accessibility and Reusability of data. All data on EarthBank can easily be accessed and downloaded from anywhere in the world based on its secure cloud-infrastructure.
20 To ensure full Interoperability EarthBank provides an Open Rest API: Connectivity with any client, may it be for inbound data or for outbound data streams. Full documentation available via swagger in the help section of EarthBank for registered data contributors Museums Victoria developed a public REST API tool for connecting its EMu Collections Management System (most global Museums use this system) to EarthBank, enabling them now to upload, maintain and update their complete rock and mineral collection automatically on EarthBank. EarthBank & FAIR data: Interoperable
21 EarthBank & FAIR data: Reusable Method-Specific Expert Advisory Groups (EAGs) Assembled for individual geochemistry methodologies: ▪Agree on data reporting best practices/standards in line with established international best practices. ▪Important types of (meta-) data to be archived? ▪QA/QC (reference material analyses). By capturing and storing all associated metadata in a structured and normalised way EarthBank provides ideal reusability of all data stored in its system.
IGSN & DOI Persistent Identifier
DataCite’s REST API for minting PIDs such as IGSNs for samples or DOIs for datasets, enables Lithodat to assign unique persistent digital identifiers to samples and datasets our users create. The EarthBank, Isotopes.au and LithoSpace data platforms benefit from this service enabling them to create true “Digital Twins”. REST APIs : Minting PIDs
•IGSN = International Generic Sample Numbers •Lithodat can allocate globally unique persistent identifiers •Lithodat can allocate individual namespaces, minimizing duplicates in your databases •This minting makes samples uniquely discoverable •All IGSN’s are minted with DOIs via our DataCite/Lithodat collaboration.
