Type specimens of Neuropterida (Insecta) in the Natural History Museum Vienna. I. Raphidioptera
Abstract
The Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW) possesses 1282 type specimens of 75 Raphidioptera species and subspecies. The type status of one specimen of Ophiopsis mediterranea H Aspöck, U Aspöck & Rausch, 1977, marked as type, could not be confirmed. Two types of the species Mongoloraphidia (Hissaroraphidia) karatauica H Aspöck & U Aspöck, 1995 are missing. Of the 75 species and subspecies, 68 belong to the family Raphidiidae and seven species to the family Inocelliidae. The species are listed in alphabetical order within the families. The page number of the original description, the type locality and the current name are recorded. The major part of the registered specimens belongs to species described by H Aspöck, U Aspöck and H Rausch.

Key Words Natural History Museum Vienna, Neuropterida, Raphidioptera, type catalogue, type specimens Introduction The Raphidioptera (snakeflies) is the smallest order of the Holometabola. Presently they comprise 252 valid species, 206 Raphidiidae, and 46 Inocelliidae (Aspöck H and Aspöck U 2023). After the first nomenclaturally valid description of a snakefly by Linnaeus (1758), research on Raphidioptera initially made little progress. At the end of the 19th century only 31 species were described, and are valid until today (Albarda 1891). It was not until the middle of the 20th century, with the studies of the taxonomically valuable genital segments (Principi 1960, 1961, 1966), that research on Raphidioptera really took off and led to numerous publications on snakeflies, including a comprehensive monograph of Raphidioptera (Aspöck H et al. 1991). The present state of knowledge is briefly summarized (Aspöck H and Aspöck U 2023). The Neuropterida Collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW) is composed of the main collection and the collection of Herbert Hölzel (1925– 2008), which came to the museum in 2010. The whole collection of Raphidioptera of the NHMW contains 168 species and subspecies, among which, 75 species and subspecies are represented with 1282 type specimens. The type status of Ophiopsismediterranea H Aspöck, U Aspöck & Rausch, 1977 is not confirmed and two types of Mongoloraphidia(Hissaroraphidia) karatauica H Aspöck & U Aspöck, 1995 are missing. The majority of the species are described by Horst Aspöck, Ulrike Aspöck and Hubert Rausch. This is due to decades of close cooperation between the authors and the Natural History Museum Vienna and the fact that Ulrike Aspöck was the curator of the collection from 1986–2006. From 2006 to 2007 a diploma thesis was written by the first author of this publication, in which the type material of Neuropterida of the main collection at the Natural History Museum Vienna was recorded for the first time, which was the basis for the present work (Kleewein 2007). Raphidioptera112 Materials and methods Most of the material is dried and pinned, only a few specimens are preserved in 75% ethanol, indicated in the text as {wet coll.}. The place of storage in the main collection is not indicated separately, that in the collection Hölzel as {coll. Hölzel}. Macerated genital segments are stored in glycerine in small glass vials and pinned to the corresponding specimen, in the text indicated as {gsg}, genital segments in glycerine. The species are arranged in families and listed alphabetically, as originally published, with reference to the author(s) and page number. Different labels are marked by square brackets ([]); if the labels of several type specimens of both sexes are identical, only the text of the labels of the males is given. Remarks by the authors are marked by curly brackets ({}). Handwritten text is displayed in italics. The current nomenclature follows Aspöck H et al. (1991, 2001), Aspöck H and Aspöck U (2013, 2014) and Oswald (2023).
