Ключевые слова: Навыки письма, рассказ, статья, стиль, текст, профессиональное написание черновика, Introduction English for Specific Purposes (ESP) represents a specialized area within English language teaching that aims to address the distinctive linguistic and communicative requirements of learners in defined academic, professional, or vocational settings. Originating in the 1960s in response to the swift growth of science, technology, and global commerce, ESP has progressed from a narrowly technical form of language instruction into a flexible, learner-oriented field. Initially, ESP courses concentrated mainly on teaching domain-specific terminology and grammatical patterns used in professions such as engineering, business, and medicine. Gradually, however, the notion of “specific purposes” has expanded to encompass discourse conventions, communication strategies, and pragmatic skills necessary for successful participation in authentic professional environments. In the contemporary global and highly competitive job market, professional communication competence has become a key determinant of career advancement. Employers now seek individuals who combine subject-matter knowledge with the ability to communicate clearly and appropriately across cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary boundaries. Skills such as writing formal reports, giving presentations, negotiating effectively, and collaborating internationally are viewed as fundamental professional capabilities. As a result, ESP instruction plays a crucial role in narrowing the gap between general language proficiency and the specialized communicative expectations of today’s professional world. Literature Review English for Specific Purposes (ESP) emerged in the 1960s as a response to the growing need for English proficiency in scientific, technical, and professional domains. The early works of Hutchinson and Waters (1987) and Strevens (1988) defined ESP as an approach to language teaching that is based on learner needs and contextual relevance, rather than a particular methodology. Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998) later refined this definition, emphasizing that ESP is distinguished by its focus on learners’ specific goals, the analysis of discourse in target settings, and the adaptation of materials to authentic professional situations. The evolution of ESP has seen a shift from language-centered approaches (focused mainly on specialized vocabulary and grammar) to learning-centered and communication-oriented paradigms. These newer approaches view ESP not merely as teaching the “language of a profession,” but as developing the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in professional and academic communities. The concept of communicative competence, introduced by Hymes (1972) and later elaborated by Canale and Swain (1980), underpins modern ESP pedagogy. Communicative competence extends beyond grammatical accuracy to include sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic skills that enable effective interaction in specific contexts. Within ESP, this implies that learners must not only understand Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (AJMDR) Vol. 2 Issue 8, November 2025 www.ajmdr.com IF: 9.2 278 the specialized terminology of their fields but also use it appropriately in real communicative events—such as meetings, negotiations, presentations, and written correspondence. Research by Basturkmen (2010) and Paltridge and Starfield (2013) confirms that ESP teaching must integrate the discourse conventions and communication patterns typical of the learners’ professional domain. For instance, engineers may need to report findings concisely, while tourism professionals must engage in culturally sensitive interactions with clients. Thus, ESP plays a crucial role in shaping learners’ ability to operate effectively within the communicative norms of their professional communities. The reviewed literature demonstrates that while ESP has undergone significant theoretical development, its practical implementation often remains constrained by traditional methods. There is a growing consensus among scholars that ESP must expand its focus to include professional communication competence, contextualized tasks, and interdisciplinary cooperation. This paper builds upon these insights to propose a redefined understanding of ESP as a catalyst for professional communication skills development in specialized domains. Methodology This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining both quantitative and qualitative techniques to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the role of ESP in fostering professional communication skills. The mixed design allows for triangulation of data, ensuring both the breadth of statistical evidence and the depth of interpretive insights. The research includes survey analysis to measure students’ perceptions and needs, as well as semi-structured interviews and classroom observations to explore teaching practices in more detail. The study follows a descriptive and exploratory design, as it seeks to analyze current ESP teaching conditions and explore innovative strategies for improving communicative competence within specific professional contexts. This approach is particularly suitable for educational research where both measurable outcomes and contextual understanding are crucial. The research was conducted in higher education institutions offering ESP courses across various professional specializations, including business administration, tourism management, and engineering. Participants included both ESP instructors and students enrolled in secondand third-year programs where English is taught for specific professional purposes. A total of 120 students (aged 19–23) and 15 ESP teachers participated in the study. The participants represented diverse academic backgrounds but shared the common goal of developing English communication skills relevant to their professional disciplines. The instructors involved in the study had an average of 7–10 years of teaching experience, including at least 3 years in ESP instruction. Three main instruments were used to collect data: Questionnaire: A structured questionnaire was administered to students to gather quantitative data on their perceptions of ESP courses, their communicative challenges, and the extent to which current ESP instruction supports their Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (AJMDR) Vol. 2 Issue 8, November 2025 www.ajmdr.com IF: 9.2 279 professional communication development. The questionnaire included both closed and open-ended items. Semi-structured Interviews: Interviews were conducted with ESP teachers to gain qualitative insights into their teaching approaches, materials used, and understanding of professional communication needs. The open-ended nature of the interviews allowed participants to elaborate on their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improving ESP curricula. Classroom Observations: Selected ESP classes were observed to assess the degree to which communicative activities, authentic materials, and real-world professional contexts were integrated into instruction. Observations focused on teacher–student interaction patterns, task types, and feedback practices. Quantitative data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies, means, and percentages) to identify general trends in students’ perceptions and needs. Qualitative data from interviews and classroom observations were analyzed using thematic coding, which involved identifying recurring patterns, themes, and categories related to communicative competence development and instructional practices. By triangulating the results of these methods, the study ensured greater validity and reliability of findings. The integration of multiple data sources provided a nuanced understanding of both learner experiences and teacher perspectives in ESP instruction. Interviews with ESP instructors highlighted several challenges in delivering communication-oriented ESP instruction. Most teachers acknowledged that the curriculum and textbooks they use remain grammarand vocabulary-focused, offering few activities aimed at developing interactive communication. While instructors understood the importance of authentic materials and task-based learning, many cited institutional constraints, such as limited contact hours, lack of training, and rigid assessment systems, as major barriers. Teachers also emphasized the absence of collaboration with subject specialists, which prevents them from aligning linguistic tasks with the real communicative practices of specific professions. This finding echoes the observations made by Belcher (2012) and Hyland (2018), who argue that effective ESP teaching requires interdisciplinary cooperation between language instructors and content-area experts. Classroom observations provided further evidence of the limited integration of authentic communicative practices in ESP courses. Lessons generally followed a textbook-based structure emphasizing vocabulary drills, translation, and grammar exercises. Communicative activities such as discussions, problem-solving tasks, or role-plays were rare and often implemented superficially. Instructors tended to dominate classroom talk, leaving students with few opportunities for spontaneous language production. Nevertheless, in the few classes where teachers employed project-based learning or simulation tasks, student engagement and communicative output significantly increased. Learners demonstrated improved confidence, collaboration, and fluency when performing role-plays such as business meetings, technical presentations, or Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (AJMDR) Vol. 2 Issue 8, November 2025 www.ajmdr.com IF: 9.2 280 client interactions. These observations suggest that incorporating authentic and task-oriented activities can significantly enhance communicative competence in ESP contexts. The findings collectively indicate that while ESP is widely recognized as essential for professional skill development, its potential remains underutilized due to traditional pedagogical approaches. The overemphasis on linguistic form at the expense of communicative function limits students’ readiness for real-world interaction. This reflects what Hutchinson and Waters (1987) describe as the “linguistic fallacy” in ESP — the mistaken assumption that mastery of technical vocabulary alone ensures communicative success. In reality, professional communication involves situational awareness, genre-specific conventions, and pragmatic adaptability, which require integrated instruction beyond language form. The study also highlights the growing relevance of task-based language teaching (TBLT) and project-based learning (PBL) frameworks within ESP. These methodologies, supported by Basturkmen (2010) and Ellis (2018), promote authentic language use and mirror the problem-solving nature of professional communication. Moreover, the data underscore the importance of ongoing needs analysis, ensuring that ESP syllabi remain aligned with evolving workplace demands. This study set out to reconsider and redefine the role of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the development of professional communication skills across various academic disciplines. Drawing upon data from surveys, interviews, and classroom observations, the research revealed a significant discrepancy between the theoretical objectives of ESP and its practical implementation in higher education institutions. While both teachers and students recognize ESP as a crucial component of professional readiness, the current instructional practices remain heavily oriented toward terminology, grammar, and reading comprehension, with limited focus on the communicative, interactive, and pragmatic aspects of language use in professional environments. Consequently, ESP courses often fail to prepare learners for the complex communicative tasks required in real workplace settings—such as teamwork, negotiations, report writing, and cross-cultural communication. Based on the analysis, the following recommendations are proposed to enhance the role of ESP in developing professional communication skills: 1. Integrate Task-Based Learning (TBL): ESP programs should incorporate communicative tasks that reflect real professional scenarios, such as client meetings, project briefings, report writing, and presentations. 2. Use Authentic Materials and Contexts: Teachers should utilize genuine workplace materials — business emails, case studies, technical documents, and industry-specific reports — to expose learners to real communication patterns. Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (AJMDR) Vol. 2 Issue 8, November 2025 www.ajmdr.com IF: 9.2 281 3. Enhance Teacher Training and Collaboration: Continuous professional development in ESP methodology and collaboration with subject-matter experts are essential for designing contextually relevant materials and assessments. 4. Promote Interdisciplinary and Digital Competence: ESP instruction should integrate elements of digital literacy, intercultural communication, and teamwork, aligning with the demands of the modern, technology-driven workplace. 5. Institutional Support and Curriculum Flexibility: Universities and language centers should revise their curricula to allow flexible, project-oriented learning frameworks that prioritize communicative competence over rote linguistic knowledge. Future studies could expand upon this research by: Conducting longitudinal studies to assess how communicative ESP training influences graduates’ workplace performance. Investigating discipline-specific communication practices (e.g., engineering, medicine, tourism) to develop tailored ESP frameworks. Exploring the impact of digital and blended learning tools in enhancing professional communication within ESP contexts. Such investigations would deepen our understanding of how ESP can evolve to meet the ever-changing linguistic and communicative demands of professional life in the 21st century. In conclusion, ESP must be re-envisioned not merely as a specialized branch of English teaching but as a strategic means of empowering learners for professional success. By prioritizing authentic communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and reflective teaching practices, ESP can effectively bridge the gap between classroom learning and the realities of the global workplace. This transformation will ensure that ESP fulfills its original promise — to equip learners not only with linguistic knowledge but with the communicative competence and confidence to thrive in their chosen professions.
