649 INTEGRATING MACHINE TRANSLATION INTO INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION: THE UZBEK CONTEXT M.Ya.Bakhtiyarov PhD, Associate Professor Head of the Department of English applied Translation, UzSWLU E.V.Gafiyatova Doctor of Philology, Professor Institute of Philology and International Communication, Kazan Annotation: This article examines the integration of machine translation (MT) tools into intercultural communication practices in Uzbekistan. The study highlights the benefits and limitations of MT in multilingual interaction, emphasizing its role in fostering linguistic accessibility, reducing communication barriers, and supporting educational and professional exchange. Special attention is given to the cultural, linguistic, and pragmatic challenges that arise when MT systems process Uzbek and other regional languages. The research draws on contemporary approaches in translation studies, computational linguistics, and communication theory, referencing both international and Uzbek academic discourse. The findings suggest that MT can significantly enhance intercultural communication when combined with human expertise, cultural competence, and continuous technological improvement. Keywords: machine translation, intercultural communication, Uzbek language, digital linguistics, translation technologies. Annotatsiya: Ushbu maqolada O‘zbekiston sharoitida mashina tarjimasi (MT) vositalarini madaniyatlararo muloqot jarayonlariga integratsiya qilish masalasi yoritiladi. Tadqiqotda MTning ko‘p tilli muloqotdagi afzalliklari va cheklovlari, xususan, tilga kirish imkoniyatini kengaytirish, muloqotdagi to‘siqlarni kamaytirish hamda ta’lim va professional hamkorlikni qo‘llab-quvvatlashdagi o‘rni tahlil qilingan. Shuningdek, MT tizimlarining o‘zbek va mintaqaviy tillarni qayta ishlashda duch keladigan madaniy, lingvistik va pragmatik muammolariga alohida e’tibor qaratiladi. Xulosalar shuni ko‘rsatadiki, MT madaniyatlararo muloqotni sezilarli darajada kuchaytirishi mumkin, biroq bu jarayonda inson omili, madaniy kompetensiya va texnologik takomillashtirish muhim ahamiyat kasb etadi. Kalit so‘zlar: mashina tarjimasi, madaniyatlararo muloqot, o‘zbek tili, raqamli lingvistika, tarjima texnologiyalari. In the era of globalization, intercultural communication has become a central component of social, academic, and economic integration. The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine translation (MT) technologies has significantly transformed multilingual communication practices worldwide. For countries like Uzbekistan - characterized by linguistic diversity and expanding international cooperation - integrating MT into everyday communication presents both opportunities and challenges. Researchers such as Nida 1 emphasize that communication across cultures requires not only lexical equivalence but also cultural and pragmatic alignment. Meanwhile, contemporary scholars argue that MT is increasingly capable of mediating communication, although cultural nuances often remain difficult to process automatically 2 . This article investigates how MT can support intercultural communication in Uzbekistan, focusing on linguistic, cultural, and technological factors. Machine translation is defined as the automated transfer of text from one language to another using computational algorithms 3 . Neural MT systems, such as Google Translate, Yandex Translate, and emerging Uzbek-language models, rely on deep learning and large datasets. Intercultural communication refers to interaction between individuals from different cultural backgrounds, requiring mutual understanding, cultural awareness, and pragmatic competence 4 . MT tools attempt to mediate these processes but cannot fully interpret cultural metaphors, idioms, and contextual meaning. 1 E. Nida, Toward a Science of Translating. Brill., 1964 2 M. Anchor Press., 1976 651 The Uzbek language, belonging to the Turkic language family, features agglutinative morphology, vowel harmony, and flexible word order. These characteristics present challenges for MT systems that are primarily trained on IndoEuropean languages. As S. Karimov 5 notes, “the morphological complexity of Uzbek requires tailored computational solutions for effective translation.” Let’s talk about usage of MT in Uzbekistan. MT is increasingly used in: - higher education (international programs, academic mobility), - government multilingual communication, - tourism and service industries, - online business and customer service, - diplomatic and cultural exchange initiatives. However, reliance on MT alone often results in semantic loss, literal translation of idioms, and misinterpretation of culturally loaded expressions. The advantages of using MT: - Accessibility: MT allows immediate communication across languages. - Speed: Facilitates rapid information exchange. - Inclusivity: Helps individuals with limited foreign language proficiency. - Educational Support: Enhances language learning through parallel texts. Limitations: - Cultural Mismatch: MT struggles with metaphors, proverbs, humor, and etiquette norms. - Pragmatic Errors: Politeness forms and speech acts may be mistranslated. - Bias and Data Gaps: Limited Uzbek-language datasets lead to inaccuracies. Hall 6 argues that culture is embedded in communication; therefore, MT must be paired with cultural competence. Here some recommendations for Effective Integration. 1. Develop Uzbek-specific MT datasets (parallel corpora, terminology bases). 2. Train MT models on culturally rich texts, including folklore, idioms, and discourse markers. 3. Promote AI literacy among students, translators, and public institutions. 4. Use hybrid approaches combining MT with human editing. 5. Enhance collaboration between linguists, AI specialists, and policymakers. Machine translation can substantially support intercultural communication in Uzbekistan, extending linguistic access and facilitating global engagement. However, 5 S. Karimov. Integrating MT with human expertise, cultural awareness, and advances in AI will ensure more accurate and meaningful cross-cultural interaction. REFERENCES: 1. M.
