BITS - Terminologies in Earth System Science
Abstract
The BITS Project (BluePrints for the Integration of Terminology Services in Earth System Sciences) aims to address the inadequate implementation of encoding semantics by establishing a Terminology Service that may serve the whole Earth System Science Community on national, European and international level. It will be developed based on the existing Terminology Service of the TIB, supplemented by an ESS Collection that already contains relevant terminologies for Earth and Environmental Sciences and to which further relevant terminologies will be added. The implementation of this TS within two data repositories (World Data Center for Climate at the German Climate Computing Center and a Data Collection at Senckenberg - Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research) will showcase the benefits regarding e.g. enhanced and improved discoverability of research products. The experience gained will be used to create blueprints that can later serve to link other Earth System Science repositories to the TS, in close collaboration with infrastructure providers on national, european and international level. By providing a reliable and user-friendly tool, the Terminology Service will contribute significantly to the promotion of open science and effective information exchange within the scientific community. We aim to foster national cooperation both on infrastructure level (TS4NFDI, NFDI4Earth) and on project level (e.g. CLICCS). However, as climate change does not stop at borders, European and international cooperation is needed to increase the role of standardised terminology services in enhancing data-driven research across ESS. At the EUDAT Conference we would like to present the benefits of Terminologies in ESS to a highly competent audience on one side and learn from other infrastructure providers on the other side.
