ABSTRACT
The Eu opean Uni e si ies Ini ia i e (EUI) ha was launched in 2017 ep esen s one
o he mos impo an d i e s ha boos coope a ion wi hin he Eu opean highe
educa ion sec o and signi ican ly emphasizes he implemen a ion o new eaching
o ma s as pa o an answe o he signi ican ly changing cu en wo ld. This p ac ice
pape ocuses on he mo i a ion and suppo ole o he uni e si y alliance owa ds i s
membe uni e si ies in eshaping hei app oach o educa ion. I o en b ings in o
discussion new agendas, which esul s in signi ican changes wi hin he educa ional
p ocess a pa icula uni e si ies (be i changes om abo e o om below). We
p ima ily ocus on he expe ience o he Czech Technical Uni e si y in P ague (CTU)
achie ed om i s membe ship in he Eu opean Uni e si y Eu oTeQ ha was
es ablished in 2020 wi hin he EUI. This pape highligh s how he in luence o he
Uni e si y Alliance ini ia ed signi ican changes in he app oach o he eaching
p ocess, including me hods and suppo ha imp o ed he impac and ou comes o
s uden s o a ious enginee ing ields a CTU. A e almos i e yea s o pa icipa ion
in he Eu oTeQ alliance, he main achie emen s o CTU we e he signi ican ly b oade
implemen a ion o new eaching o ma s and me hods ac oss all le els o educa ion
and he ini ia ion o in e nal suppo o eaching. Achie emen s and changes in
educa ion esul ing om CTU’s pa icipa ion in he Eu oTeQ a e men ioned and u he
discussed.
1 INTRODUCTION
The Czech Technical Uni e si y in P ague (CTU) is a esea ch-o ien ed echnical
uni e si y wi h mo e han h ee hund ed yea s o his o y. The gene al app oach o he
educa ional p ocess a CTU was his o ically mo e adi ional, based on classical
eaching o ma s wi h only limi ed implemen a ion o new ones, such as PBL o CBL
(p ojec -based lea ning and challenge-based lea ning, espec i ely). This is mainly
due o he emphasis being pu on esea ch ac i i ies and scien i ic ou pu o he
uni e si y and i s academic s a a he han eaching and educa ion, which is also
e lec ed in he ac ha majo i y o CTU’s budge goes owa ds esea ch unding.
Hence he educa ional ole o he uni e si y was sys ema ically being o e shadowed
by i s ole in esea ch, p ac ically a all le els.
CTU became a membe o he Eu opean uni e si y alliance Eu oTeQ a he end o
2020 and has been conside ably in luenced by i since hen. CTU’s pa icipa ion in he
alliance has spa ked in e nal discussions a di e en le els o he uni e si y on a
a ie y o opics ela ed o enginee ing educa ion. Eu oTeQ Enginee ing Uni e si y, as
a uni e si y alliance, comp ises mos ly echnical uni e si ies om a ious Eu opean
coun ies wi h di e en his o ical backg ounds and endo sing he common ision and
mission (Eu oTeQ 2025) he main goal o which is o implemen new lea ning o ma s
wi hin i s join lea ning en i onmen .
2 INSPIRATION, SHARING BEST PRACTICES AND IMPLEMENTATION
Pa ne uni e si ies wi hin he uni e si y alliance inspi e and suppo one ano he in
implemen ing hei join mission and goals. As he main goal o he uni e si y alliances
es ablished unde he Eu opean Uni e si ies Ini ia i e (EUI) is o es ablish a join
in e na ional campus o his pu pose (Eu opean Educa ion A ea, 2025), he
uni e si ies can es ablish a lea ning ne wo k wi hin he alliance. The i s le el on which
uni e si ies can lea n om each o he is he undamen al expe ise on imp o ing
educa ion. Indi idual membe uni e si ies can lea n om ea ly adop e s o educa ional
inno a ion who ha e al eady gained expe ience in expe imen ing wi h new eaching
o ma s such as p ojec -based o challenge-based lea ning (Fuchs e al. 2022). CTU
expe imen ed wi h new eaching o ma s on a smalle scale in he pas , bu wi h he
Eu oTeQ and i s signi ican ocus on CBL cou ses, he ini ia i es ega ding eaching
inno a ions ha e ecen ly become mo e p ominen .
New eaching o ma s implemen a ion
As he main goal o he Eu oTeQ uni e si y alliance is he inno a ion o educa ion by
implemen ing new eaching o ma s, CTU s a ed o ocus mo e on hese and has
in oduced hem in a ious s udy p og ammes a di e en le els o s udy. The alliance-
wide ini ia i es mapping he implemen a ion o new eaching o ma s ha we e s a ed
by he Eu oTeQ uni e si y alliance (Voll 2023) p o ided he ini ial mo i a ion o ocus
mo e on hese ac i i ies and ha e signi ican ly enhanced hei ecogni ion a he
manage ial le el o he uni e si y as well as he gene al willingness o adop hem.
Du ing he i s phase o implemen ing new eaching o ma s a CTU, he leading
ini ia i e was he de elopmen o he Eu oTeQ Collide , which in oduced new
challenges o CTU’s eaching and suppo s a . In essence, Collide , a join CBL
ini ia i e o he Eu oTeQ alliance (Eu oTeQ 2025), b ings oge he eams o s uden s
om a ious backg ounds and ields in sol ing eal-li e challenges and c ea ing a mo e
sus ainable u u e. A CTU, Collide ep esen s one o he i s uni e si y-wide
implemen a ions o CBL, and as a ela i ely new eaching o ma i also b ings a lo o
challenges o bo h eache s and s uden s and aises ques ions abou he eal o ma ,
imeline, and he essen ial suppo needed o i s success ul implemen a ion. This
ini ia i e could be used as an example o good eaching inno a ion p ac ice ha is
sha ed wi hin he uni e si y alliance. As e iden in he Eu oTeQ Collide compa a i e
s udy (Helke e al. 2023), a he beginning o i s de elopmen in 2020, he expe ience
o indi idual pa ne uni e si ies wi h CBL cou ses and hei implemen a ion was
signi ican ly di e en wi h espec o eaching skills, suppo , in as uc u e as well as
coope a ion wi h ex e nal s akeholde s.
The collabo a i e en i onmen wi hin he uni e si y alliance hen p o ides a ious
esou ces and good p ac ices on how o o e come speci ic challenges and obs acles.
The CO-CREATION – A Roadmap Towa ds Socially Responsible Enginee ing
Educa ion (Voll e al. 2024) ha was w i en by au ho s om a ious Eu oTeQ
uni e si ies could de ini ely se e as an example.
Teaching quali y and suppo
As p e iously s a ed, his o ically he educa ional ole o he uni e si y seems o ha e
been o e shadowed by he p edominan ocus on esea ch. The ocus on quali y o
eaching a CTU was limi ed, and he e was a gene al lack o sys emic suppo .
A emp s o in oduce new eaching o ma s a CTU on a wide scale ha e spa ked
in e nal discussions a a ious uni e si y le els abou essen ial eaching suppo .
These discussions we e also d i en by bo om-up ini ia i es ad oca ing o eaching
suppo , usually led by ea ly-ca ee eache s such as doc o al candida es who lack
men o ing, me hodological guidance, and o he esou ces. The in e nal discussions
ega ding quali y assu ance o eaching ha e been spa ked by hese ac i i ies a
a ious le els o he CTU and u he in luenced by he changes o na ional legisla ion
in Czechia (e.g. Highe Educa ion Ac ) du ing pas yea s. The quali y assu ance o
educa ion is now becoming an in eg al pa o he in e nal e alua ion pe o med unde
he supe ision o he In e nal E alua ion Boa d (CTU 2025). C ucially, he need o
ins i u ionalized eache suppo is now ecognized a a manage ial le el wi hin he
uni e si y. Ini ial s eps o se i up and hus ollow he example o o he Eu oTeQ
uni e si ies ha e al eady been aken; s eps such as submi ing a p oposal o ex e nal
g an unding, alloca ing human esou ces, ga he ing suppo i e ma e ials and ools
e c.
3 RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Collide and beyond
The Eu oTeQ Collide , a lagship CBL ini ia i e de eloped wi hin he Eu oTeQ
uni e si y alliance, ep esen s he i s uni e si y-wide CBL cou se a CTU
implemen ing new eaching o ma s. The suppo and exchange o bes p ac ices
among he Eu oTeQ pa ne uni e si ies pa icipa ing in Collide ac i i ies we e
essen ial o i s success ul implemen a ion, despi e some unexpec ed obs acles
caused by he pandemic es ic ions ha a ec ed he i s wo ounds o he Collide .
Wi h o e i e yea s o de elopmen and ou comple ed ounds, and a i h cu en ly
in p og ess, he Collide can be ega ded a success, o e ing aluable insigh s and
expe ience, e.g., de elopmen o a sus ainable ne wo k o coope a ing indus ial
pa ne s in long- e m con ex . The Collide -based expe ience a CTU p omp ed a
eassessmen o he uni e si y class a angemen o CBL and he implemen a ion o
essen ial eaching suppo based on Collide e alua ion wi hin Eu oTeQ (Helke 2023)
o his pa icula cou se.
Wide implemen a ion o his new eaching o ma a CTU is cu en ly eaching i s limi s
due o he a ailabili y o esou ces, such as eaching and suppo s a , budge ,
legisla ion, and o he s. The in e nal cos analysis o CBL cou ses in compa ison o
adi ional ones was pe o med a CTU in 2023, and i s esul s showed ha a
signi ican ly wide implemen a ion o CBL is cu en ly o e he eaching budge as CBL
cou ses a e se e al imes mo e cos ly. Due o hese easons, he ebuilding o he
cu icula is likely o ake longe han p e iously expec ed. Ne e heless, he di ec ion
has al eady been es ablished a CTU.
The Collide and o he CBL cou ses o ganised in he las ew yea s a CTU, and which
we e included in he e alua ion and esea ch ac i i ies pe o med by he Eu oTeQ
expe eams (Voll e Al. 2023 and Helke e al. 2023), con inue o gene a e new
knowledge and skills on which CTU can u he base i s wide implemen a ion o new
eaching o ma s. The uni e si y alliance also p o ides mo e sophis ica ed
me hodology and inno a i e ools o e alua ion o cou ses ha a e using new
eaching o ma s, such as he CBL compass ( an den Beem e al., 2022), ha was
used o he mapping and e alua ion o se e al CBL cou ses a CTU. Mo eo e ,
sha ed knowledge and bes p ac ices wi hin he Eu oTeQ alliance p o ide
a s imula ing en i onmen o i . The e alua ion o a ious CBL cou ses a CTU (see
Fig. 1) du ing he pas ew yea s indica es ha eaching suppo is mos ly missing and
is one o he limi ing ac o s o wide CBL implemen a ion a CTU; among o he s a e
o example me hodology suppo , echnical suppo and sui able eaching spaces.
Wide implemen a ion o new eaching o ma s a CTU is u he limi ed by i s ela i e
cos s in compa ison o mo e adi ional o ms o eaching, which has been p o en by
he e alua ed cou ses and Eu oTeQ Collide . As he “pilo ” implemen a ion o new
eaching o ma s p o ed i s bene i s and impac o s uden s, he cu en inancial
limi a ions slowed down he p ocess a li le bi and swi ched he ocus mo e on quali y
han quan i y.

The Teache s’ club and Teaching suppo
A no iceable new endea ou in he ield o pedagogy and eache aining o PhD
candida es and o he academic wo ke s is he ecen ly es ablished Teache s’ Club a
he Facul y o Elec ical Enginee ing. Despi e pedagogical ac i i ies no being
obliga o y anymo e o PhD candida es a CTU, i is a he common o many o hem
o each unde g adua e cou ses ela ed o hei ield o esea ch and expe ise.
Mo eo e , one o he goals o PhD s udies in gene al is o p epa e one o hei u u e
ca ee in academia, o which eaching cons i u es an in eg al pa . A he momen ,
CTU has no dedica ed ins i u ional suppo and aining o uni e si y eache s and
lec u e s. In his con ex he Teache s’ Club has been o med in 2024 as a join e o
o se e al PhD candida es and p o esso s.
The main aim o he Teache s’ Club (2024) is o c ea e a communi y o eache s om
a ound he uni e si y o sha e expe iences, bes p ac ices, and insigh s in o he
educa ion p ocess. The main ac i i y o he Club a e mode a ed discussions usually
ocused on a speci ic eaching- ela ed opic, such as gi ing and ecei ing eedback o
AI in educa ion. Wi hin hese discussions he pa icipan s sha e hei expe iences,
exchange iews and discuss he bes p ac ices and po en ial poin s o imp o emen
in hei eaching wo k. The Club’s websi e also includes a cu a ed lis o o eign
educa ional e en s a ailable o anyone who is in e es ed and would like o pa icipa e.
The websi e also se es as a no ebook o mee ing no es and miscellaneous
knowledge ela ed o he opic o eaching. Las yea , he Teache s’ Club o ganised
11 discussion sessions and a ac ed a ound 40 indi idual pa icipan s om he anks
o PhD candida es and o he academic wo ke s such as associa ed p o esso s and
p o esso s. In 2025, on op o he semi- egula discussion mee ings, he o ganise s o
he Club a e planning on implemen ing a mu ual eache obse a ion p og amme o
p o ide eache s eedback om hei colleagues o supe iso s. The Club also seeks
o augmen he da abase o ma e ials and knowledge accessible a hei websi e.
The Teache s’ Club ini ia i e, s emming p ima ily om he need o PhD candida es,
who pa icipa ed in eaching unde g adua e cou ses, has e ol ed om a p e iously
in o mal g ouping “Technical Socie y o Teaching” which has in u n been inspi ed by
a simila p io ini ia i e “Dej Vice Uceni” (in ansla ion “Gi e mo e o eaching”). Tha
he e ha e been se e al such ac i is g oups ocused on he de elopmen and
imp o emen o eaching p ac ices, poin s o he ac ha he e has been a consis en
call o any such suppo o a ew yea s now. This is also exempli ied by he esul s
o a ecen ques ionnai e dis ibu ed among all PhD candida es a he Facul y o
Elec ical Enginee ing a CTU in P ague, in which almos 60% o s uden s ha e no ed
ha hey would welcome some o m o suppo in hei eaching ac i i ies, be i
cou ses, lea ning/ eaching ma e ials, wo kshops, e c.
The CTU membe ship in he Eu oTeQ alliance allows he uni e si y and i s s uden s
o ha e access o he ma e ials and p ac ices sha ed by o he pa icipan uni e si ies,
a many o which eache suppo and de elopmen is much mo e well-es ablished.
While he Teache s’ Club is s ill o e whelmingly un on he olun a y le el, i is
ecognised by he leade ship o he Facul y o Elec ical Enginee ing who a e cu en ly
se ing up a plan o mo e wide-sp ead o ganised suppo inspi ed by he examples o
o he uni e si ies wi hin he Eu oTeQ alliance.
A CTU, some good examples o eaching suppo can al eady be ound in ecen
his o y. The uni e si y-wide echnical suppo o online and hyb id eaching ha
s a ed spon aneously in a e y sho pe iod du ing he pandemic being one o hem.
These p ac ice-p o ed suppo ac i i ies (e.g., eco ding o lec u es) ha e con inued
o be used despi e he end o pandemic es ic ions and ha e signi ican ly imp o ed
he quali y o hyb id and online cou ses a CTU. Among o he mo e p ominen and
impac ul ini ia i es is o example he opening o a eache s’ oom in he uni e si y
campus in Dej ice.
4 CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS
The p o ided examples o he ecen de elopmen a CTU in P ague indica e ha
being pa o he uni e si y alliance can signi ican ly con ibu e o and mo i a e he
c ucial changes in eaching p ocesses ha e lec cu en ends in pedagogy and
indus y a each membe uni e si y. The CTU bene i ed mos wi hin he i s yea s o
he uni e si y alliance o ma ion om using bes p ac ices and examples om he o he
membe uni e si ies on how o success ully implemen he new eaching o ma s like
CBL and see he eal-li e bene i s o es ablished eaching suppo a he uni e si y.
The join mission and goals, sha ing o bes p ac ices and me hodology wi hin he
alliance, could signi ican ly shape and suppo u he de elopmen o enginee ing
educa ion a echnical uni e si ies o hei s uden s’ bene i . The us wo hy
en i onmen wi hin he uni e si y alliance is essen ial o success in he u u e and
ep esen s a key added alue o he e ec i e in e na ional coope a ion a a ious
