decisions abou hei educa ion, a any le el. Ou s uden s b ing a di e en
pe spec i e - one ha we, as eache s, may no always see - which can lead o
aluable insigh s and imp o emen s ha enhance bo h eaching and lea ning.
S uden pa icipa ion can be designed on cou se, cu iculum and ins i u ional le el,
and can ake many o ms. S uden s can ake oles as eaching assis an s, guiding
wo kshops and classes (cou se le el), o pee u o s suppo ing new s uden s. They
can o ganize ac i i ies ha b ing s uden s and eache s oge he o discuss
educa ion and co-c ea ed educa ion oge he (cu iculum le el). Sel -managed
s uden eams can help o he s uden s de elop skills in in e disciplina y a eas like
ma hema ics, p og amming o p o essional de elopmen (ins i u ional le el).
Building s uden - eache pa ne ships a TIS
In ecen yea s, he Facul y o Technology, Inno a ion and Socie y (TIS) a The
Hague Uni e si y o Applied Sciences (THUAS) has success ully implemen ed
se e al o ms o s uden pa icipa ion. In 2022, he s udy p og amme Indus ieel
P oduc On we pen (Indus ial P oduc Design, IPO in sho ) became pa o he
p ojec Pa ne Up, led by THUAS esea ch g oups Inclusi e Educa ion and Global
Ci izenship.
Fo yea s he esponse a e o cou se e alua ions a IPO had been low, and he
p og amme commi ee did no ha e s uden membe s. S a ing small, a g oup o i e
s uden s and wo eache s was o med o hink abou ways o se up s uden - eache
pa ne ships and in ol e mo e s uden s in imp o ing educa ion a IPO. I ook qui e
some ime, abou a yea , o he s uden s and eache s in his g oup o ge used o
hei new oles. Slowly, he s uden s ook he lead: hey ook on mo e asks and
showed mo e ini ia i e, while he eache s le go o hei ole as leade s o he g oup.
As a eache , his equi es pa ience and a conscious e o o c ea e oom o
s uden s o ake owne ship.
In h ee yea s, he s uden - eache pa ne ship a IPO has g own om a adi ional
ela ionship in o an equal pa ne ship whe e s uden s a e aking esponsibili ies and
eel encou aged o sha e hei ideas. S uden s ake he ole o eaching assis an s,
no only guiding wo kshops and s uden s, bu also ac i ely using hei pe spec i e o
imp o e design educa ion. O he g oups o s uden s o ganize cu iculum eedback
sessions (Fig. 1) and pa icipa ion quizzes, p epa ing ques ions o engage a la ge
g oup o s uden s in e hinking educa ion a IPO (while enjoying pizza).

The slowly g owing Pa ne Up mo emen inspi ed o he s udy p og ammes a TIS o
o m s uden - eache pa ne ships and s a co-c ea ing educa ion. A acul y-wide
example is he CalculusCo ne : a place whe e s uden s can wo k oge he on
ma hema ics. S uden s om di e en TIS s udy p og ammes mee a he
CalculusCo ne , which is also led by TIS s uden s. The CalculusCo ne opened in
2024, and a eam o eache s is in ol ed o guide he p ocess. The idea is o
g adually educe he eache in ol emen and le he CalculusCo ne be a ully
s uden -led place. Wi h he engagemen o i s s uden s, TIS has aken he i s s ep
o change he adi ional ela ionship be ween eache s and s uden s and c ea e an
open lea ning communi y.
