Funded by the European Commission (EC) under the framework of the Horizon 2020 (H2020) programme, PAPILLONS represents a consortium of 20 partners from 12 countries. It is a transdisciplinary cutting-edge research program and brings together Europe’s leading experts on MNPs in agricultural soils. More information about the project can be found at: www.papillons-h2020.eu D5.4 – Data Management Plan xxiii About this Deliverable This report corresponds to the final Data Management Plan – i.e. deliverable D5.4 and encompasses a comprehensive overview of the data collected and/or generated by the PAPILLONS Consortium partners to assess impacts of micro-scale plastics on soil properties, fauna and plants. The main objective is to fill knowledge gaps on the sources, behaviour, and long-term ecological and socioeconomic impacts of MNPs from AP in European soils and provide the scientific background to enable policy, agricultural and industrial innovation towards sustainable farm production systems. Through novel data collection, generation and analysis PAPILLONS will build a Knowledge Hub to fill these gaps using co-development, sharing and exploitation of AP and MNPs data. For the final Data Management Plan, PAPILLONS Consortium decided to use Argos - an open-source tool developed by OpenAIRE fully aligned with the OPEN and FAIR principles. This report describes the 32 datasets produced throughout the PAPILLONS project implementation. For direct access to archived datasets please also check the PAPILLONS community on Zenodo. Subtask 1.1.1. – Chemical composition of main agricultural articles used for protected cultivation systems Task: Analysis of polymeric composition and chemical additives This dataset reports the detailed analysis of the possible chemical additives present in the formulations of the agricultural plastics selected in the frame of Task 1.1. The output of this activity consists in the development of a database of the polymer formulations representative of the AP, including type of additives. Identification of additives has been carried out through the ‘suspected target’ approach following a priority list elaborated in collaboration with other partners and stakeholders (Task 1.1.1). Clusters of tabular data (with metadata including variable labels, code labels and definition of missing value) reporting commercial name of analysed products, name of chemical constituents (both polymer and identified chemical additives), CAS number of identified chemical constituents, quantitative or semi-quantitative estimation of amounts of chemical constituted per mass of the bulk product. Estimated environmental losses during ageing. The associated dataset available on Zenodo includes data generated upon the implementation of the ST 1.2.1 "Analysis of degradation and fragmentation of AP and transfer of MNP to soil". The activities dealt with the study of degradation and fragmentation from weathering and agricultural practices of conventional and biodegradable AP relevant for transfer of MNP to soil (during both use and end of life). In particular, the experimental data refer to characterization of biodegradable mulch films, pristine (coded M-BIO0) or subjected to photo-oxidative weathering (M-BIO192), as well as the same samples buried in soil for varying time periods, up to 353 days. The folders included contain gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI-TOF) data, which account for the change in film molecular weight upon soil burial. Furthermore, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) data and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Water Contact Angle (WCA) images of some selected soil-buried samples are also provided. SubTask 2.3.1. – Microplastic transport efficiency from runoff experiments Task: Transfer and behaviour of MNP to groundwater and surface water Clusters of tabular data (with metadata including variable labels, code labels and definition of missing value, experimental design description) reporting estimators of the transport efficiency of microplastics during runoff experiments Dataset of microplastic mobilization rates in response to factors such as precipitation and crop development is under preparation. It pertains to task "2.3. MNP and additives transport to groundwater, surface water, air and uptake by biota and crop" and sub-task “Transfer and behaviour of MNP to groundwater and surface water”. The runoff experiment at the modified pinson collector (IMDEA) experiment is currently completed in proportion of 60 percent, covering the following elements: • Experimental development performed • Soil and water sampling performed • Sample treatment and analysis under development Infiltration and surface runoff water samples together with soil samples at different depths were collected from modified Pinson collectors. Two experimental treatments (three replicates) were run. Film microplastics were added in all systems. Samples were collected during crop development and rainfall events. Bare soil was used as a control. Samples are being processed using FT-IR. Data structure will include number of microplastics and their characterization in the samples collected to define the fate of such particles and their transport efficiency. The dataset on “Plastic additive determination in run-off water” pertaining to sub-task “SubTask 2.3.1 - Microplastic transport efficiency from runoff experiments” is currently completed in proportion of 20% percent covering the following elements: i) LC-MS method optimization ii) Run-off water samples analysis The samples were collected by our partners IMDEA. Quality assurance measures were in place during analysis including calibration curves, blank measurements and use of validated methods. The expected delivery date of the corresponding datasets on PAPILLONS Zenodo Community is during 12/2024. Task: Lateral Microplastic Transport Clusters of tabular data (with metadata including variable labels, code labels, and definitions of missing values, along with experimental design descriptions) reporting the transport (count) of microplastic particles during runoff experiments. D5.4 – Data Management Plan 96 The dataset entails the transport of microplastics (MP) during heavy rainfall events, as a function of slope gradients (1°, 3°, 9°) and tillage practices, utilizing eight independent soil-filled containers (approximately 80 x 80 x 20 cm). The soil was spiked with field-relevant concentrations (about 7 g/m², 50 mg/kg dw) of polyvinyl terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), and tire wear (TW). Runoff from each container is collected to assess MP transport. MPs are either distributed onto the soil surface to simulate worst-case scenarios (Experiment 1) or integrated into the soil to enhance field relevance (Experiment 2). Both experiments have been conducted, with Experiment 1 samples currently undergoing analysis (approximately 25% complete). Analysis of Experiment 2 samples will follow. A third experiment is scheduled for late spring / early summer to investigate vegetation effects on lateral MP transport. Runoff will be collected, and MP particles analysed as in the previous experiments. For each experiment, samples are assigned consecutive numbers to minimize reference to specific treatments, thus reducing systematic errors in analysis. Datasets from all three experiments will be available to the PAPILLONS Zenodo community no later than December 2024. Template: Horizon 2020 Type: Dataset 16.1.
