2. CUP4SOIL p ojec o e iew
The CUP4SOIL p ojec aims o con ibu e o a downs eam EO-based se ice o suppo na ional and
Eu opean agencies in epo ing on soil heal h/quali y and hus, con ibu e o Land Deg ada ion Moni o ing
(LDN) and Sus ainable De elopmen Goal (SDG 15.3.1) epo ing. The p oduc s can po en ially also be
used o o he han na ional uses, such as o mo e local and/o comme cial applica ions. I unde pins he
p e-ope a ional Soil Moni o ing Sys em cu en ly being de eloped wi hin he ESA Wo ldSoils p ojec wi h
he po en ial o se e as a componen o he Cope nicus Land Moni o ing Se ice. The syne gies be ween
he ESA Wo ldSoils p ojec and he CUP4SOIL ac i i ies in es iga ing soil heal h mapping will s eamline
he ac i i ies and boos use up ake. The 2-yea CUP4SOIL p ojec comp ises he ollowing objec i es:

e sion o a Use Requi emen Documen (URD) ha CUP4SOIL p esen s, discussed and adap ed wi h a
la ge communi y du ing he i s Use Requi emen i ual mee ing. Fo his pu pose, a speci ic online use
su ey is de eloped based on he amewo k o he Cope nicus use equi emen s. The su ey is planned
o be epea ed a he end o he p ojec .
Soil da a p oduc s: In he nex s ep, CUP4SOIL gene a es Eu opean-wide soil in o ma ion p oduc s based
on Sen inel-1 and Sen inel-2 da a. Fo his pu pose, DLR and ISRIC join hei la ge-scale p ocessing
expe ise and acili ies. DLR is c ea ing se e al soil- ela ed inpu p oduc s such as soil e lec ance
composi es, in o ma ion abou he co e equency o soils and he ege a ion dynamic on a high spa ial
esolu ion (20 m). These da a p oduc s low in o he high-pe o mance compu ing en i onmen o ISRIC ha
gene a es in o ma ion abou soil o ganic ca bon con en , ex u e pH alues, e c. using digi al soil mapping
app oaches. The esul ing ou pu da a will be made publicly a ailable. Selec ed key use s a e in ol ed o
e alua e he usabili y o he p oposed soil in o ma ion p oduc s. I is also planned o compa e he CUP4SOIL
p oduc s wi h o he exis ing Eu opean-wide soil p oduc s om unning p ojec s and ini ia i es. The esul s
will be p esen ed and discussed a he inal wo kshop.
Showcases: Based on his use exchange and eedback, he Cope nicus URD is upda ed and equi ed
changes a e in eg a ed in o he soil in o ma ion p ocesso s o DLR and ISRIC o imp o e he soil p oduc
po olio. In his phase, showcases a e de eloped oge he wi h local municipali ies, na ional ins i u es and
Eu opean agencies. The showcases use he sugges ed Cope nicus soil inpu da a o de i e highe - alue
in o ma ion abou soil quali y and heal h o speci ic egions o demons a e he usabili y and applicabili y o
he soil p oduc po olio o Cope nicus use s. The esul s and e alua ion o hese showcase de elopmen s
will be p esen ed and discussed o a la ge use communi y a he inal CUP4SOIL wo kshop.

ields o he Fede al S a e o B andenbu g. The p ojec is a con ibu ion o he clima e s a egy o
B andenbu g which aims o educe he ne g eenhouse gas emissions o ze o by he end o 2045. The
esul s will enable ede al au ho i ies o assis a me s in hei ac i i ies o educe loss o soil o ganic ca bon
and inc ease soil e ili y.
3.1 Pa ne desc ip ion
The S a e O ice o Mining, Geology and Raw Ma e ials o B andenbu g (Landesam ü Be gbau, Geolo-
gie und Rohs o e; LBGR) is he Fede al Geological Se ice o B andenbu g, an agency ha p o ides in-
o ma ion on he p ope ies and he spa ial dis ibu ion o soils (e.g. soil maps) o ede al and na ional
agencies, scien i ic ins i u ions and he public. T adi ionally, soil maps ha e been c ea ed manually based
on expe knowledge by assessmen o da a om soil sampling campaigns and o en i onmen al da a
such as maps o geology, geomo phology and land use. Mo e ecen ly, hese adi ional echniques a e
complemen ed by da a-d i en me hods such as machine lea ning. These models allow o ep esen mo e
complex in e ac ions and include a a highe se o inpu a iables, such as image da a. This showcase is
one o he i s p ojec s o he LBGR whe e hese echniques ha e been applied.

3.3 Task o his showcase
The goal o he p ojec is he es ima ion and p edic ion o he o ganic ca bon s ock o mine al soils o ag i-
cul u al ields (c opland, g assland) in B andenbu g. This is he i s a emp o he LBGR o a s a e-wide
es ima ion o ca bon s ocks on ag icul u al mine al soils wi h no compa able p io p ojec . Ag icul u ally
used pea lands we e no conside ed, because a map o he o ganic ca bon s ocks o pea lands has al-
eady been published (Fell e al. 2015).
Fo he p ojec 650 si es we e selec ed o sampling (Figu e 1). A each si e, 5 soil pi s combined wi h d ill-
ing up o a dep h o one me e we e conduc ed. Soil ho izons wi h an o ganic ca bon con en abo e 0.3 %
we e sampled and analysed o bulk densi y, pH, o ganic and ino ganic ca bon con en . The ca bon s ock
o each si e was hen de i ed in ou dep h in e als (0-10 cm, 0-30 cm, 0-50 cm and 0-100 cm). The spa-
ial dis ibu ion o ca bon s ocks was modelled wi h andom o es o each dep h in e al independen ly,
esul ing in ou ained sepa a e models and ou ca bon s ock maps. The co a ia es used o model i -
ing and p edic ion in ol e he digi al ele a ion model and de i ed mo phome ic a iables (e.g. slope,
opog aphic we ness index), SRC, geological maps, soil maps, land use maps (i.e. c opland s. g assland)
and annual maps o c op ypes ha we e combined o yield p oxy a iables o c op o a ion. The same se
o co a ia es was used o each o he ou models.

a e age ca bon s ock o ag icul u al mine al soils o en i e Ge many. Howe e , o B andenbu g i is in
line wi h p e ious s udies (Jacobs e al. 2018). Si es wi h highe ca bon s ocks a e g asslands, hyd omo -
phic soils and (polde ed) loodplains such as he Ode b uch whe eas low ca bon s ocks a e c oplands lo-
ca ed on ill pla eaus (Figu e 2). The egional pa e n o ca bon s ock dis ibu ion co esponds o a small
scale (1:300,000) map o ca bon s ocks in B andenbu g ha has been published p e iously (Kühn e al.
2015).

Each model was alida ed by he ou -o -bag da a gi ing a oo mean squa e e o and a Pseudo-R² o , o
ins ance, 0.7 kg m-2 and 0.69 o he dep h in e al 0-10 cm and 3.0 kg m-2 and 0.53 o he dep h in e al
0-100 cm, espec i ely. The a iable impo ance indica es ha land use ype, soil ype, geological ma e ial
and SRC a e he mos ele an p edic o a iables o all models.
3.4 Summa y / e alua ion o he CUP4SOIL da a used
Fo ou showcase, he SRC p oduc p o ed o be a aluable con ibu ion. As ou lined abo e, SRC anked
among he mos ele an co a ia es in e ms o a iable impo ance o all ou models o soil ca bon s ock
spa ial dis ibu ion. The LBGR has cu en ly no he expe ise and he compu ing in as uc u e o p ocess
sa elli e image da a such as he SRC and hus depends on ex e nal p o ide s o c ea e high-quali y soil
