In oduc ion
Cha acidiinae is a monophyle ic g oup o small Neo opi-
cal eshwa e ishes (Buckup, 1993a). Cha acidium Reinha d ,
1867 is he mos speciose di e se genus o his sub amily,
wi h abou 50 nominal species (Buckup, 2003; Buckup, 2007).
They a e small sized ishes, which do no su pass 100 mm o
SL, widesp ead in Neo opical i e s (Buckup, 1993a). Buckup
(1993b) p o isionally diagnosed Cha acidium (in a
phylogene ic sense) by he p esence o a black spo nea he
base o he middle caudal- in ays. New species o
Cha acidium ha e been ecen ly desc ibed by Buckup & Reis
(1997), Buckup & Hahn (2000), Za ske & Gé y (2001), Melo &
Buckup (2002) and Tapho n e al. (2006). This pape desc ibes
a new species collec ed by he s a o Nupélia (Núcleo de
Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ic iologia e Aqüicul u a,
Uni e sidade Es adual de Ma ingá), in h ee a luen s o he

Ma e ial and Me hods

Diagnosis. Cha acidium hei mos igma a can be
dis inguished om all o he congene s, excep C.se ano
(uppe io U uguai basin),by he p esence o eigh o 11
incomple e oblique ba s on body sides, ex ending upwa ds
and downwa ds om he la e al line and independen o he
eigh o nine do sal ans e se ba s which usually a e p esen
in Cha acidium species. Cha acidium hei mos igma a di -
e s om C. se ano by wide body wid h (12.2 o 15.7%) and
sho e numbe o pe o a ed scales on la e al line (32-35) s
8.7 o 11.1% in SL, and 37-39 scales in C. se ano.

(plu al o s igma = ma ks), e e ing o he se ies o black
ma ks p esen on he body sides. A noun in apposi ion.
Common name. Cha acidium hei mos igma a is popula ly
known in he sampled egion as “cani e e” o “mocinha”.
