1.1 G eenland halibu
Biology
The G eenland halibu (Reinha d ius hippoglossoides) is a la ish species, widely dis ibu ed in
he No h A lan ic. A Wes G eenland i is ound om Cape Fa ewell (59°N) in sou h o
Qaanaaq in no h (77°30’N) bo h insho e and o sho e a dep hs down o a leas 2000 m.
The main spawning a ea is belie ed o be loca ed in he Da is S ai on he sou he n slope o
he idge be ween G eenland and Ba in Island p obably a dep hs > 1500 m. F om he
spawning a ea eggs and la ae d i s no h along he wes coas o G eenland o a e b ough
in o Canadian wa e s by a lec ion o he Wes G eenland cu en . The la ae ha d i
no hwa d along he wes coas o G eenland each he se ling a ea in Sep embe -
No embe and se le (goes om pelagic s age o a bo om dwelling s age) a 250-400 m
dep h.
T adi ionally la ae se le in Disko Bay on he shel es o no he n pa o S . Helle iske Bank,
Disko Bank (Smid 1969, Jø gensen 1997a, S eenbe g e al. 2013), and p obably on he banks
in Ba in Bay o a a ying ex end, depending on he hyd og aphic condi ions (wa e
empe a u e and he eloci y o he Wes G eenland cu en ).
F om he se ling a eas he G eenland halibu g adually mig a es owa ds deepe wa e as
hey g ow (Jø gensen 1997a, S eenbe g e al. 2013). O sho e in he Da is S ai (Jø gensen
1997a) and in he Ba in Bay (Unpublished agging da a om G eenland Ins i u e o Na u al
Resou ces) G eenland halibu g adually mig a es owa ds he spawning a ea in he Da is
S ai .
The G eenland halibu s ocks loca ed in he insho e a eas a e p obably composed o ish ha
o iginally ha e se led o mig a ed on he inside o he banks in he Ba in Bay and g adually
mo ed in o he jo ds as hey g ow. The G eenland halibu ha end up in he Disko Bay
and No hwes G eenland jo ds emains he e and do no con ibu e o he spawning in
Da is S ai (Boje 2002). No signi ican spawning has been obse ed in he a ea, and he
s ocks a e dependen on ec ui men om o sho e spawning a eas.
The e is li le in o ma ion on spawning in he Ba in Bay (Simonsen & Gunde sen 2005) and
all hough spawning may ake place in Ba in Bay i was es ima ed ha he egg and la al
mo ali y is so high due o he low wa e empe a u es ha he chance o success ul
spawning in Ba in Bay is conside ed low (S eenbe g e al. 2013).
Su eys
Du ing he yea s he e ha e been conduc ed a numbe o bo om awl su eys aimed a
G eenland halibu in Ba in Bay bo h by G eenland and Canada (Jø gensen 2011, T eble
2011). The mos ecen su ey in G eenland wa e s in 2010 co e ed dep hs be ween 400 and

1500 m o 75° 30’ N. G eenland halibu we e ound in he en i e a ea (Fig. 1) and has
p e iously been ound o 76° 30’ N (Jø gensen 2002). The biomass is equally spli be ween
G eenland Canadian wa e s. G eenland su ey da a om 2010 showed ha he biomass was
e enly dis ibu ed h oughou he su ey a ea (Jø gensen 2011).
Su eys a e also conduc ed in insho e a eas by gill ne and loglines bu hese su eys a e
only useable o es ima ion o CPUE (Ca ch pe uni e o ) (Nygaa d &Boje 2012).
Ca ches
Since he collapse o he cod s ock in he mid 80’ies he G eenland halibu esou ce
comp ised he majo g ound ish esou ce in ecen yea s and he expo o G eenland
halibu cons i u e abou 25 % o he o al expo om G eenland only exceeded by he expo
o sh imp (S a is ics G eenland, S a is ics o 2011) and he con ibu ion om he ishe y o
he economy especially in he h ee insho e a eas Upe na ik, Uummannaq and Disko Bay is
subs an ial. (Delaney e al. 2012).
The ca ches a No hwes G eenland ha e been ela i ely cons an in ecen yea s
amoun ing o 6.500 ons o sho e in Ba in Bay (same amoun in Canadian wa e s) and abou
20.000 ons insho e including Disko Bay (Anon. 2012b). The G eenland halibu ca ches in he
G eenland pa o Ba in Bay including he insho e a eas cons i u es abou 60% o he o al
G eenland halibu ca ches in G eenland wa e s (Anon. 2012a, Anon. 2012b ) .
1.2 No he n sh imp
Biology
The No he n sh imp (Pandalus bo ealis) occu s on he con inen al shel o Wes G eenland.
The species is dis ibu ed om Cape Fa ewell (60°N) o Qaanaaq (77°30’N) (Be gs öm
2000). The ishe y o No he n sh imp has his o ically aken place om Cape Fa ewell o
Upe na ik (73°N) while he dis ibu ion and densi y o No he n sh imp no h o 73°N is
no well desc ibed (Hammeken A boe 2012).
No he n sh imp is ound a dep hs be ween 50 m and 1000 m, wi h he highes densi ies
be ween 150 m and 500 m (Kingsley 2011). The p e e ed habi a is muddy bo om and he
empe a u e op imum o No he n sh imp is be ween 2°C and 4°C. No he n sh imp
usually mig a es in o he wa e column a nigh o eed and e u n o he bo om du ing he
day (Be gs öm 2000).
Sh imps a e omni o es, i.e. hey li e on many di e en ypes o ood: wo ms, dead o ganic
ma e ial, algae and zooplank on (Ho s ed & Smid 1956), and hey a e hemsel es ood o
la ge ish such as cod and G eenland halibu (Pa sons 2005).

3.1 G eenland halibu insho e
Desc ip ion o he ishe y
The insho e ishe y in NAFO Di ision 1A is concen a ed in h ee main a eas: Disko Bay,
Uummannaq and Upe na ik and he o al landings ha e been abou 20.000 ons in ecen
yea s (Fig. 10). The ishe y is adi ionally pe o med wi h longline om small open boa s
(dinghies) o by dog sledges. In he ecen 10-15 yea s bigge essels (>25 ee ) ha e en e ed
he ishe y, bu essel la ge han 125 BT a e no allowed o ish inside he 3-mile line
(insho e). Typically he ishe y is ca ied ou in he inne pa s o he ice- jo ds a dep hs
be ween 500 and 800 m. In he middle o he 1980s gillne s we e in oduced o he insho e
ishe y, and we e used mo e commonly in he ollowing yea s. Today 90-99 % o he o al
landings a e, howe e , aken by longlines. The gillne ishe y is egula ed by a minimum
mesh-size o 110 mm (hal meshes), while he e a e no gea egula ions on he longline
ishe y (Nygaa d & Boje 2012).
The dis ibu ion o he ca ches insho e o G eenland halibu aken by essels g ea e han 30
. and epo ed o GFLK as log books a e shown in Fig 11. The ishe y wi h dinghies and
dog sledges is conduc ed in he same a eas as he ishe y by la ge essels.

3.3 No he n sh imp
Desc ip ion o he ishe y
In 1970 a mul ina ional o sho e ishe y aimed a No he n sh imp was ini ia ed. In he
beginning, he ishe y concen a ed on he wide shel wes and sou hwes o Disko Bay
(A ea 6; Fig. 12), bu as he ishe y expanded in he 1980s, Disko Bay (A ea 1-3),
Hols einsbo g Deep (A ea 7) and no he n a eas (A ea 0 and 4-5) we e included in he
ishe y. Du ing he la e 1980s he ishe y expanded sou hwa ds o A ea 8-13. Since he la e
1990s he ishe y has mo ed no hwa d and he ishe y is now concen a ed in Disko Bay
and o sho e in Ba in Bay (A ea 0 and 3-5) (Fig. 13) (Hammmeken A boe 2012).

Ca ches in he Ba in Bay a ea (no h o 68°N) has cons i u ed be ween 60% and 75% o he
o al ca ch aken in Wes G eenland wa e s du ing he las 5 yea s amoun ing o be ween

82.000 ons and 96.000 ons (Fig. 13). F om he la e 1990s o 2007 he ca ches in he Disko Bay
a ea ha e been be ween 15.000 ons and 20.000 ons. Since 2008 he ca ches in he Disko Bay
a ea ha e been be ween 30.000 ons and 44.000 ons. The inc ease in ca ches aken by he
insho e lee in he Disko Bay A ea is consis en wi h esul s om he su ey, in which he
p opo ion o su ey biomass in he Disko Bay has inc eased signi ican ly since 2005
(Kingsley e al. 2012; Hammeken A boe 2012).

F om 1981 un il 2003 he Wes G eenland ishe y was p osecu ed by G eenlandic essels in
NAFO Suba ea 1 and o Canadian essels in NAFO Di . 0A, bu in 2003 a quo a on 1000
ons o sho e a Wes G eenland was alloca ed o EU essels. The quo a has been inc eased
since hen hen and is now on 4000 ons (Hammeken A boe 2012).
In ecen yea s ca ches o sho e ha e mainly been aken by 8-10 la ge (1860-3377 BT) ac o y
awle s om G eenland using single and win awl. The o sho e lee has o s ay 3 n.mi.
ou side he baseline and is excluded om i e closed a eas - ‘sh imp boxes’. Fu he , he e
a e a ew (2139-2340 BT) sea-going ac o y awle s ha a e ishing on a coas al quo a bu
also pa icipa e in he o sho e ishe y (G.H. 2002). Abou 30 small awle s (mos o hem
less han 250 BT) cons i u e he insho e lee . They a e ishing on a coas al quo a bu a e
allowed o ish e e ywhe e including Disko Bay (A ea 1-2; Fig. 12) and he i e ‘sh imp
boxes’ (Hammeken A boe 2012). These awle s ish wi h a single awl. The coas al lee
gene ally ices he ca ch and lands i o p ocessing. G eenland ac o y essels wi h on-boa d
p oduc ion licenses a e equi ed o land 25% o hei ca ches (Hammeken A boe 2012).
The mean ishing dep h in he o sho e a ea in Ba in Bay is 299 m (min. 50 m, max. 624 m,
q25% 260 m, q75% 355 m). In he insho e a eas he mean ishing dep h is 257 m (Kingsley
2011)
The ishe y o No he n sh imp peaks in 3. qua e whe e abou 31.7 % o he ca ches a e
aken, bu he ishe y has been a he e enly dis ibu ed h oughou he ecen h ee yea s
wi h 17.5 %, 21.7% and 29% o he ca ches in 1., 2., and 4. qua e , espec i ely (Fig.16). The
access o he mo e no he n g ounds is es ic ed by sea-ice in he ea ly pa o he yea .
