expanding 4G and 5G ne wo ks, and he cul u al shi owa d online consump ion ha e oge he
igge ed a social communica ion e olu ion. Today, India hos s one o he la ges numbe s o

simul aneously challenges long-es ablished no ms o edi o ial o e sigh , e hics, and
accoun abili y. As misin o ma ion, ha e speech, online ex emism, p i acy b eaches, and

inno a ion, and enabling censo ship o poli ical manipula ion. Thus, India’s digi al egula o y

esponsibili y.

illing he egula o y acuum. The In o ma ion Technology Ac , 2000—India’s ounda ional
digi al law—was o iginally c a ed o e-comme ce and cybe c ime, no o egula ing social
media o digi al jou nalism. O e ime, amendmen s and new ules ha e a emp ed o adap he
Ac o con empo a y needs, especially h ough he In o ma ion Technology (In e media y
Guidelines and Digi al Media E hics Code) Rules o 2021 and subsequen upda es. These ules
in oduced new obliga ions o digi al in e media ies, OTT pla o ms, and online news po als.
