simula ion app oaches. The esul s demons a e ha LiAlO2 exhibi s inwa d g ow h o e ime,
o ming a s able LiAlO2 -Al in e ace a e 7 days. Deu e ium pe mea ion es s e ealed ha he
LiAlO2 coa ing e ec i ely esis s deu e ium pe mea ion and di usion. No ably, as he LiAlO2

eac o s (HTGR). A key challenge is minimizing i ium loss unde high- empe a u e condi ions.
While Li₂TiO₃ and Li₄SiO₄ a e p omising ma e ials o blanke s in usion eac o s, LiAlO₂—known
o i s excellen chemical s abili y a high empe a u es—has been selec ed as a p ima y candida e o
i ium p oduc ion in HTGRs. A po en ial solu ion in ol es encapsula ing LiAlO₂ wi h zi conium (Z )
in an Al₂O₃ con aine , bu he i ium beha io in such composi e sys ems is no ye ully unde s ood.
In his s udy, we in es iga ed i ium ans e beha io om LiAlO2 o Z unde hea ing condi ions.
LiAlO2 and Ni coa ed Z we e sealed in a qua z ube and i adia ed by neu ons in he JRR-3 eac o .
A e i adia ion, he ollowing 3 expe imen s we e conduc ed o e alua e he ex en o i ium ans e
om LiAlO2 o Z .
・Run 1: LiAlO₂ powde + Ni-coa ed Z sphe es, hea ed o e ec i ely 700 °C
・Run 2: LiAlO₂ pebble + Ni-coa ed Z sphe es, hea ed o 900 °C
・Run 3: LiAlO₂ powde + Ni-coa ed Z sphe es, hea ed o 1000 °C
The sealed samples we e p e-hea ed o he a ge empe a u e a 30 °C/min and held o 60 minu es.
In an A - illed glo ebox, Z sphe es and LiAlO₂ we e sepa a ed, and hen indi idually ehea ed o
ei he 900 °C o 1000 °C a 5 °C/min. T i ium elease a es o e ime we e quan i ied using sequen ial
wa e bubble s: i ia ed wa e apo (HTO) was collec ed in he i s bubble , and gaseous i ium
(HT), a e oxida ion, in he second. The i ium e en ion a ios in LiAlO₂, Z , and o he componen s
we e as ollows:
・Run 1: LiAlO₂ powde : Ni-coa ed Z : o he s = 94.0 : 4.3 : 1.7
・Run 2: LiAlO₂ pebble : Ni-coa ed Z : o he s = 89.0 : 9.9 : 1.1
・Run 3: LiAlO₂ powde : Ni-coa ed Z : o he s = 95.0 : 4.7 : 0.3
