Pu pose: The aim o his s udy is o compa e home and away eams in e ms o echnical
pa ame e s a ec ing ball-in-play ime in UEFA Champions League ma ches and o analyze he
impac o home ad an age on goal coun and ma ch ou comes. Me hod: The sample o he
s udy consis s o 138 ma ches played du ing he league phase o he 2024---2025 UEFA
Champions League season. Da a we e ob ained om he websi e mackolik.com, which sou ces
i s s a is ics om OPTA Spo sda a. Technical pa ame e s such as o al ma ch du a ion, ball-in-
play ime, ouls, h ow-ins, co ne s, o sides, goals, and ma ch ou comes we e analyzed.
Independen samples - es s and Chi-squa e es s we e used o s a is ical analysis, wi h a
signi icance le el se a p<0.05. Resul s: Acco ding o he indings, he e we e no s a is ically
signi ican di e ences (p > 0.05) be ween home and away eams in e ms o ball-in-play ime
and he echnical pa ame e s ha a ec i . Howe e , home eams had signi ican ly highe goal
a e ages and win a es (p < 0.05). This indica es ha home ad an age is pa icula ly e iden in
sco ing and ma ch esul s. Conclusion: In high-le el compe i ions such as he UEFA Champions
League, home ad an age does no mani es in echnical pa ame e s bu is clea ly obse ed in
sco e- ela ed ou comes. These indings p o ide aluable s a egic insigh s o coaches and
pe o mance analys s, especially in p epa ing o away ma ches.

Foo ball is one o he mos ollowed spo s b anches in he wo ld in e ms o i s economic
size and sociological e ec s. In mode n oo ball, besides physical pe o mance, many
ac o s such as psychological ac o s, s a egic planning and s a is ical analyses a e
de e mina i e. In his con ex , he scien i ic in es iga ion o on- ield and o - ield
a iables a ec ing ma ch pe o mance has become one o he cu en s udy a eas o
spo s sciences.
Foo ball is a complex spo wi h high empo and e sa ile physical, echnical and
ac ical needs. Due o he na u e o he game, physical loading and pe o mance
pa ame e s a e closely ela ed no only o he o al ma ch ime bu also o he ime he
ball is ac i ely in play (Al mann e al., 2023). The phenomenon o home ad an age,
cha ac e ised by he endency o mo e han hal o home eams o win in ma ches played
unde a balanced home and away ix u e, has a ac ed conside able a en ion om
esea che s (Cou neya and Ca on, 1992; Ramchandani e al.) The sou ces o home
ad an age a e gene ally ca ego ised unde ou main headings: (1) spec a o suppo , (2)
pi ch knowledge and amilia i y, (3) lack o a el a igue, and (4) conscious o
unconscious biases in e e ee decisions (Ca on, Loughhead, & B ay, 2005; Ande son &
Pie ce, 2009). The e ec s o hese ac o s on objec i e measu es o pe o mance,
pa icula ly on goal sco ing, ma ch esul and ime on he ball, ha e become inc easingly
impo an .
When analysed on a eam basis, home ad an age can be de ined as he supe io
pe o mance o eams in home ma ches, such as ea ning mo e poin s, sco ing mo e
goals, e c. compa ed o hei opponen s. Nume ous eam-le el s udies a ound he wo ld
(A ma as and Polla d, 2012; Ma ek and Va a, 2017; Polla d and Gomez, 2009) show
ha he as majo i y o home eams bene i om his ad an age. Recen s udies ha e
shown ha he e ec o home ad an age is mo e p onounced in spo s wi h highe le els
o physical con ac , especially due o he inc eased p essu e on eams and e e ees due
o spec a o in luence. Fu he mo e, esea ch has shown ha home ad an age is also
in luenced by league le el (Ga cia e al. 2013; Polla d and Gómez, 2014; Ma ek and
Va a, 2020; Pee e s Van Ou s, 2021). Ramchandani e al. (2021) epo ed ha home
ad an age a es anged be ween 58% and 61% in p o essional oo ball leagues in England.
Polla d and Gomez (2014) ound ha home ad an age exis s in 157 na ional domes ic
oo ball leagues wo ldwide by analysing ma ches played be ween 2006 and 2012. Inan
s a ed ha in i e majo Eu opean oo ball leagues (Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, P emie
League and Se ie A), spec a o suppo and s adium capaci y ha e a signi ican impac
on home ad an age (Inan, 2020). Home eams pe o med pa icula ly well in he
Bundesliga, sco ing 70.45% o he o al poin s. In La Liga and Ligue 1, hese a es
inc eased o 71.65% and 71.51% espec i ely. In he P emie League and Se ie A, he a es
we e 69.67% and 69.07% espec i ely. Boyko e al. analysed da a such as goals sco ed,
yellow ca ds, ed ca ds and penal ies in he P emie League and concluded ha e e ees
gi e mo e ad an age o home eams (Boyko e al., 2007). In addi ion o his in o ma ion,
playe s gene ally expe ience highe sel -con idence, mo i a ion and concen a ion when
playing a home, due o spec a o suppo and amilia i y wi h he s adium en i onmen
(Polla d e al. 2008). Fu he mo e, analysing he beha iou o playe s when playing a
home o away enables he de elopmen o s a egies o minimise o maximise he e ec
o home ad an age. This allows home eams o u he imp o e hei pe o mance, while
o away eams i makes i possible o implemen home ad an age o se ing echnical-
ac ical s a egies. As a esul , s udying home ad an age no only helps us o be e

The UEFA Champions League ep esen s he highes le el o compe i ion in oo ball,
as i is he mos p es igious club-le el oo ball o ganisa ion in Eu ope. Since he quali y
di e ences be ween eams in eli e ou namen s such as he Champions League a e
ela i ely smalle , he e ec o o - ield ac o s (such as home ad an age) on he ma ch
esul may become mo e no iceable. When he li e a u e is examined, i is seen ha
home-away s udies a e e alua ed in e ms o many pa ame e s and analyses a e made in
e ms o he cha ac e o he ma ch and winning Goumas, 2017; G yko e al., 2020;
Chacon-Fe nandez e al. 2025). Howe e , in his con ex , i is seen ha he esea ch on
he pa ame e s ha may be e ec i e in p olonging he ma ch du a ion is limi ed. Wi h
he p esen s udy, i is aimed o e alua e hese pa ame e s in e ms o home-away o he
i s ime.
The main pu pose o his s udy is o compa e home and away eams in e ms o
pa ame e s ha may a ec he ime o possession in UEFA Champions League ma ches
and o analyse he e ec o home ad an age on he numbe o goals and he ma ch esul .
The esea ch includes he analysis o he ac o s a ec ing he low o he game such as
ime o possession, ouls, co ne s, h ow-ins and o sides wi hin he home-away
dis inc ion. In his espec , he s udy aims bo h o con ibu e o he exis ing li e a u e on
home ad an age and o p o ide new da a ha can be used in echnical- ac ical analyses.
The indings o he s udy can shed ligh on he decision-making p ocesses o bo h spo s
scien is s, coaches and analys s.
Me hod
Popula ion and Sample
The popula ion o he s udy consis s o he UEFA Champions League, league s age
ma ches o he 2024-2025 season. The sample consis s o 138 oo ball compe i ions in
he league s age ma ches played in his p ocess.
Da a Collec ion P ocess
The da a on oo ball s a is ics used in he s udy we e ob ained om he mackolik
(h p://www.mackolik.com) websi e. Da a esou ce o he websi e is OPTA Spo sda a
Company. The in e -ope a o eliabili y o he company's acking sys em (OPTA Clien
Sys em) used o collec oo ball ma ch s a is ics was iden i ied o ha e eached an
accep able le el. The collec ed da a consis ed o o al ma ch ime, ime in possession,
ouls, h ow-ins, co ne kicks, o side, goals sco ed, ma ch esul pa ame e s.
Da a Analysis
IBM SPSS S a is ics ( 25) p og amme was used o da a analysis. S a is ical signi icance
le el was accep ed as p < .05. The pa ame e s a ec ing he ime he ball was in play o
home and away eams we e analysed wi h Independen Samples - es . Chi-squa e es
(χ²) was used o es he signi icance le el o he win/loss dis ibu ion o home and away
eams. Mean, s anda d de ia ion (S d. De ia ion) and s anda d e o (S d. E o Mean)
we e used as desc ip i e s a is ics. P alue <0.05 was accep ed.
Resul s
In his s udy, 138 league s age ma ches played in he UEFA Champions League 2024-
2025 season we e analysed. When he winning home and away eams we e compa ed in
e ms o echnical pa ame e s a ec ing he ime he ball was in play, no s a is ically

signi ican di e ence was ound. Acco ding o he esul s o independen samples - es ,
he a e age o he home eams in e ms o o al ime was 96.83 ± 2.92 minu es, while he
a e age o he away eams was 96.23 ± 2.64 minu es, and his di e ence was no
s a is ically signi ican (p = 0.221). Simila ly, he mean o he home eams was 58.13 ±
5.03 minu es, while he mean o he away eams was 57.33 ± 4.41 minu es, and his
di e ence was no signi ican (p = 0.329) (Table 1, Figu e 1). The e was no signi ican
di e ence be ween he home and away eams in e ms o he numbe o ouls, h ow-
ins, co ne s and o sides, which a e o he ac o s ha may a ec he ime he ball is in
play. While he a e age numbe o ouls o he home eams was 21.90 ± 6.61, his alue
was 20.87 ± 4.58 o he away eams and he di e ence was no s a is ically signi ican (p
= 0.283). Simila ly, he e was no signi ican di e ence be ween he wo g oups in he
numbe o h ow-ins (p = 0.694), co ne s (p = 0.597) and o sides (p = 0.238) (Table 1,
Figu e 2). These esul s show ha echnical s oppages, which ha e a di ec e ec on he
ime he ball is in play, do no a y signi ican ly o he winning eams acco ding o home
o away s a us. Howe e , in he analyses made in e ms o he numbe o goals, he home
ad an age was e iden . In he compa ison made o e all ma ches, he a e age goal o he
home eam was 2.04 ± 1.66, while he a e age goal o he away eam was 1.50 ± 1.48 and
he di e ence was ound o be s a is ically signi ican (p = 0.005) (Table 2). In addi ion,
when he dis ibu ion o ma ch wins o home and away eams was analysed, i was
de e mined ha home eams had 86 wins in 138 ma ches, whe eas away eams had 52
wins. This dis ibu ion shows a s a is ically signi ican di e ence acco ding o he chi-
squa e es esul (p < 0.001) (Table 3). When hese indings a e e alua ed in gene al, i
is seen ha he home ad an age does no ha e a di ec e ec on he playing ime o he
ime he ball is in play; howe e , he e is a signi ican supe io i y in a ou o he home
eam in he ou pu s ela ed o sco e p oduc ion and ma ch esul .

Discussion
The aim o he s udy is o compa e he ime o he ball in play and he numbe o ouls,
c owns, co ne s and o sides among he ac o s a ec ing he ime o he ball in he
ma ches won by he home and away eams in he compe i ions played in he UEFA
Champions League, league s age o he 2024/2025 season.
In he s udy, he pa ame e s a ec ing he ime he ball is in play do no show a
signi ican di e ence acco ding o being home o away eam. This may be due o he ac
ha he playe s in a high-le el o ganisa ion such as he Champions League ha e simila
echnical and ac ical s anda ds as well as hei psychological s a es and do no ha e away
anxie y. In addi ion, in a league whe e he bes eams o Eu ope compe e, i can be said
ha he e o s o gain 3 poin s o he eam and he e o s o ge a bonus and o show
hemsel es o he playe s a ec hei ac ical s opping beha iou s. In a s udy conduc ed
in i e eli e Eu opean leagues (LaLiga, Bundesliga, Se ie A, P emie League and Ligue 1),
no signi ican di e ence was ound in he numbe o ouls o home and away eams
(Chacon-Fe nandez e al. 2025). No s a is ically signi ican di e ence was ound in oul
s a is ics in home and away compe i ions (Van Damme and Bae 2019). The ime he
ball is in play is seen as an impo an pa ame e o he home eams in winning he
compe i ion (Je ome e al. 2023). This is because ac o s such as cons an ouls and
h ow-ins, which cause he game o pause and hus a ec he empo o he ma ch, a e
no a posi i e si ua ion o he home eam. Home eams wan o keep he game low and
a ack con inui y ali e wi h mo e passing combina ions. On he o he hand, he away
eams' beha iou o cons an ly ac ically s opping he game in o de no o lose he
ma ch has become a common si ua ion in oo ball (Han e al. 2022).
In he s udy, i was ound ha he goal a e ages and ma ch winning a es o home
eams we e signi ican ly highe han away eams. In a s udy conduc ed in i e eli e
Eu opean leagues, i was ound ha home eams sco ed mo e goals (Chacon-Fe nandez
e al. 2025). Many s udies ha e shown ha home eams ha e highe win a es in home
ma ches (Cou neya & Ca on, 1992; Ne ill & Holde , 1999; Polla d, 2006). The main
easons o his phenomenon include c owded an suppo , e e ee decisions,
geog aphical ac o s, psychological ac o s, a elling a igue o he away eam, eam
ac ics and many o he ac o s (Almedia & Volosso i ch, 2017; Ca on e al., 2005;
Polla d, 2008. In addi ion o hese ac o s, he s eng h and quali y o he opponen
should also be included. Allen and Jones (2014), in a s udy co e ing 20 seasons
(1992/1993-2011/2012) o he English P emie League, obse ed ha he a e age goals
sco ed and poin s gained a home we e highe han he away a e ages, and Boyko e al.
(2007) obse ed ha he a e age goals sco ed by home eams was 1.5 and 1.1 o away

eams suppo s he phenomenon o home ad an age, which is equen ly epo ed in he
li e a u e. Ad an ages such as spec a o suppo , pi ch knowledge, and no a elling a e
especially p ominen in de e minan ac o s such as sco e p oduc ion and ma ch esul .
