This article investigates the metaphors of time in Virginia Woolf’s modernist novel To the Lighthouse, focusing on how Woolf transforms time from a linear chronological phenomenon into a subjective, psychological, and symbolic dimension. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and stylistic analysis, the study explores three dominant metaphorical models: time as space, time as movement, and time as a destructive-natural force. Using close textual analysis, the research identifies how Woolf employs imagery, inner monologues, rhythmic syntax, and shifting perspectives to represent temporality as fluid, elastic, and emotionally charged. The findings reveal that Woolf’s metaphors not only reflect modernist aesthetics but also reshape the reader’s perception of memory, loss, and human consciousness. This study contributes to modernist literary scholarship by offering a detailed linguo-stylistic examination of how metaphor serves as a narrative mechanism for constructing psychological time. Key words: Virginia Woolf; To the Lighthouse; metaphors of time; conceptual metaphor theory; modernism; temporality; stylistic analysis. Introduction. Time occupies a central place in literary modernism, particularly in the works of Virginia Woolf, who considered chronological time (“clock time”) insufficient for portraying the depths of human consciousness. Instead, she experimented with subjective time, allowing memories, impressions, and emotions to shape the narrative. To the Lighthouse (1927) remains one of Woolf’s most explicit experiments with temporal fluidity, especially in the middle section, “Time Passes,” where time becomes almost a living entity. While previous scholarship has focused on stream-of-consciousness and narrative structure, fewer studies provide a systematic metaphorical analysis of time in the novel. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to investigate how Woolf constructs time metaphorically and how these metaphors contribute to thematic meaning, emotional tone, and narrative rhythm. Research questions: ➢ What conceptual metaphors of time are dominant in To the Lighthouse? ➢ How do these metaphors shape the reader’s understanding of temporality? ➢ What linguistic devices does Woolf use to construct metaphorical time? Literature Review. Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) argues that abstract concepts—such as time—are understood through concrete experiences, such as movement, space, or natural processes. Many English metaphors (“Time flies,” “Time heals,” “The weekend is coming”) reveal underlying cognitive structures. Modernist literature frequently manipulates such metaphors to represent consciousness. Scholars such as Briggs (2006), Goldsmith (2015), and Stewart (2018) note that Woolf’s temporal system is non-linear and deeply intertwined with memory. However:

This research fills that gap by providing a metaphor-based, example-driven analysis that integrates CMT with literary stylistics. Methodology. This study employs qualitative textual analysis, guided by Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The procedure consisted of three steps: Identification of Metaphorical Expressions. Metaphors of time were identified using MIPVU (the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit), which involves: Reading the text closely; Determining the basic meaning of words; Determining the contextual meaning; Classifying an expression as metaphorical when contextual meaning contrasts with basic meaning. Example: In “Time Passes,” Woolf writes: “The house… slowly fell into silence.” The house cannot literally “fall,” so the verb is metaphorical. Time is implicitly represented as a force that pushes the house toward decay. Categorization into Conceptual Metaphors. Expressions were organized into conceptual domains such as: time is space time is movement time is a natural force. Example: “The nights passed.” This is categorized under time is movement because time behaves like a moving entity. Stylistic and contextual interpretation. Each metaphor was interpreted in relation to: emotional tone; themes (memory, loss, decay, hope); narrative function; character psychology. Example: “In the darkness, the sails of time shook”. Here, temporal change is experienced through sensory imagery, reinforcing Woolf’s modernist emphasis on perception. This multi-step methodology ensures accuracy, depth, and avoidance of subjective overgeneralization. Results. The analysis revealed three major metaphorical models of time in To the Lighthouse. Time as Space. Woolf frequently spatializes time, allowing characters to walk through, cross, or stand before moments. Key examples: “They had reached that moment.” – Time conceptualized as a location. “A distance separated their thoughts.” – Time is measurable space. “The years stretched ahead.” – Time as horizontal extension. Interpretation. This metaphor helps show characters’ emotional distance and psychological journeys. Spatial metaphors make internal states visible and measurable.

Modernist temporal subjectivity is especially strong in metaphors of time as a moving entity. Examples: “The days slipped by.” – Time moves silently and uncontrollably. “The night advanced.” – Time behaves like a soldier or hunter. “Moments rushed together.” – Memory collapses linearity. Meaning. These metaphors convey the fragility of human experience. Movement emphasizes the fleeting nature of life. Time as a Natural Force (Decay, Wind, Sea, Light). The most dominant metaphors appear in “Time Passes,” where time is portrayed as a destructive yet indifferent natural force. Examples: “The airs darkened and the lights faded.” Time destroys light → symbol of hope and life. “The sea without a stain repeated eternally.” Time becomes cyclical, rhythmic like waves. “The wind blew the doors open. Time is an intrusive force that invades the house. “The house was left to its own devices” Time acts like an invisible caretaker destroying everything. Woolf constructs time as a power beyond human control, emphasizing themes of mortality and impermanence. Discussion. The findings illustrate that Woolf’s metaphors of time function on two major levels. Narrative Level, they structure the novel’s rhythm. Spatial time organizes psychological transitions. Moving time constructs fluid narrative shifts. Natural-force time structures “Time Passes” as an autonomous chapter. Psychological Level. Metaphors reveal characters’ emotions: Mrs. Ramsay experiences time as fleeting beauty. Mr. Ramsay perceives time as pressure and intellectual limitation. Lily Briscoe sees time as memory and artistic struggle. Philosophical Level. These metaphors embody Woolf’s modernist concept of temporality: Not objective → but emotional, Not linear → but cyclical and irregular, Not external → but deeply interior. Thus, metaphors serve not as decoration but as structural principles of Woolf’s worldview. Conclusion. This study concludes that metaphors of time in To the Lighthouse are central to Woolf’s modernist project. The novel constructs time through three conceptual models—space, movement, and natural force—each contributing to the psychological and philosophical depth of the narrative. Time becomes a dynamic, fluid, and emotionally charged dimension that shapes character development, narrative structure, and thematic resonance. A metaphorical analysis thus reveals temporal complexity that traditional narratological approaches may overlook. The research provides a foundation for future linguistic and cognitive studies of modernist temporalities. List of references: 1. Briggs, J. (2006). Modernist Perceptions of Time in Woolf’s Fiction.
