F ench bo anis A.R. F anche (1834-1900) has desc ibed nea 60 axa in he genus P imula L., 16 axa om
hem we e discussed in a i s publica ion. Ou cu en pape will con inue he esea ches de o ed o he ypi-
ica ion o P imula names, on he base o expe s udying he specimens in he ba ia BM, E, G, K, LE, MHA,
MW, NS, NSK, P, W, WU, Z and open da abases. In 1886 F anche published an a icle: “Obse a ions su
deux P imula monoca piques de la Chine e desc ip ions d’espèces nou elles de la Chine e du Thibe o ien al”
and desc ibed 11 new species: P. da idii F anch., P. o besii F anch., P. heuche i olia F anch., P. incisa F anch.,
P. malacoides, F anch. P. mal acea F anch., P. memb ani olia F anch., P. moupinensis F anch., P. o eodoxa
F anch., P. o ali olia F anch. and P. poissonii F anch. Fo P. da idii and P. heuche i olia we ound only one
he ba ium shee o each and hey will be holo ypes. Fo eigh species: P. o besii, P. malacoides, P. mal acea,

INTRODUCTION
The genus P imula L. has abou 500 species, he bigges con-
cen a ion o hem was ound in he Himalaya and wes e n
China (Richa ds 2003). The He ba ium o he Muséum
na ional d’His oi e na u elle (MNHN, P) is es ima ed o
hold abou 8 million p ese ed specimens om a ound he
wo ld, bu pa icula ly in F ance, ancophone A ica, New
Caledonia, Madagasca , Sou heas Asia (wi h China), and
F ench Guiana. The scien i ic names o P imula plan s a e
equen ly misapplied o plan s in cul i a ion. Al hough
he applica ion o scien i ic names is de e mined by he use
o nomencla u al ypes, as s a ed in A . 7.1 o he In e na-
ional Code o Nomencla u e o Algae, Fungi, and Plan s
(ICN) (Tu land e al. 2018), he equi emen o indica e a
ype when publishing a new axon applies only o names
published on o a e Janua y 1s 1958. Consequen ly, many
names published be o e hen we e no ypi ied, he eby
c ea ing con usion o bo anis s and ho icul u is s in he
iden i ica ion and e i ica ion o axa. Ne e heless, many
he ba ium specimens and o he his o ical collec ions associa ed
wi h plan names published be o e 1958 a e now a ailable
ia i ual he ba ia, such as MNHN, assis ing esea ch on
hese axa (Belyae a e al. 2018).
F ench bo anis Emmanuel D ake del Cas illo (28 Decembe
1855-14 May 1904) was bo n in Pa is and s udied wi h L.E.
Bu eau a he MNHN. D ake assembled a he ba ium ha
con ained mo e han 500 000 specimens om a ound he
wo ld. He acqui ed se e al impo an he ba ia including
ha o Ad ien F anche in 1880, which con ained plan s
collec ed in Japan by D . Sa a ie and ma e ial om Abbé
Da id’s a els in China and Mongolia. D ake’s he ba ium
also included duplica es sen om he MNHN. He died in
1904 a Sain -Cy an-du-Jambo , bequea hing his collec ions
o he Pa is he ba ium. As a consequence, he Pa is he ba -
ium can con ain se e al shee s o he same ga he ing ha
unques ionably cons i u e duplica es bu whose labels may
no be iden ical.
Ad ien René F anche (1834-1900) was a F ench bo anis ,
based a he Pa is Muséum na ional d’His oi e na u elle. He
is no ed o his ex ensi e wo k desc ibing he lo a o Chi-
na and Japan, based on he collec ions made by F ench
Ca holic missiona ies in China, A mand Da id, Pie e Jean
Ma ie Dela ay, Paul Guillaume Fa ges, Jean-And é Soulié,
and o he s. A.R. F anche was he axonomic au ho o many
plan s, including a 60 numbe o species om he gene a P im-
ula (F anche 1885, 1886, 1887, 1898). In many cases, he
o iginal desc ip ions o P imula axa we e based on one o a
ew di e en ga he ings, comp ising se e al specimens which
we e sen o di e en he ba ia. Consequen ly, a high numbe
o iso ypes and syn ypes can be ound o some names. The
mode n e ision o a ious P imula axa du ing he inspec ion
o ma e ial in some impo an he ba ia (BM, E, G, K, LE,
MHA, MW, NS, NSK, P, W, WU, Z) and using Da abases
o he ba ium collec ions h ough in e ne , ha e e ealed he
need o es ic he ypi ica ions o se e al names. In ou i s
publica ion (Ko onyuk 2017), de o ed o F anche ’s pape
“Les P imula du Yun-nan” F anche (1885), 16 axa we e
discussed and 11 o hem we e lec o ypi ied.
In 1886, in “Obse a ions su deux P imula monoca piques
de la Chine e desc ip ions d’espèces nou elles de la Chine e du
Thibe o ien al”, F anche desc ibed again 11 new species o
P imula. Many o hese he ba ium shee s ha e ype s a us
as “iso ypus”, bu ins ead in he p o ologue F anche did
no ma k he i s shee as “ ypus”, he lis ed some collec ion
poin s. As he p o ologue ci a ion does no e e o a single
specimen, all specimens ha co espond o he o iginal
desc ip ion ha e o be ea ed as syn ypes. Acco ding o
A . 9.6 o he ICN: a syn ype is any specimen ci ed in he
p o ologue when he e is no holo ype, o any one o wo
o mo e specimens simul aneously designa ed in he p o-
ologue as ypes. Re e ence o an en i e ga he ing o a pa
he eo , is conside ed ci a ion o he included specimens
(Tu land e al. 2018). Since usually M. A. F anche (1886)
did no make any o mal ype designa ion when desc ibing
P imula axa, he he ba ium shee s kep a P He ba ium,
whe e he wo ked du ing a long ime, a e designa ed he e as
he lec o ypes, isolec o ypes o syn ypes.
