Linguis ic Compe ence as he Co e o Language Lea ning
Linguis ic compe ence emains he ounda ion o o eign language educa ion. I
includes knowledge o g amma ical s uc u es, ocabula y, phonology, and p agma ic
usage. Wi hou linguis ic p o iciency, lea ne s canno pa icipa e meaning ully in
communica ion. Howe e , linguis ic compe ence mus be de eloped in a way ha
e lec s eal-li e language use a he han isola ed ule memo iza ion. Communica i e
Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) ha e
con ibu ed signi ican ly o shi ing linguis ic ins uc ion owa d mo e au hen ic and
unc ional lea ning. These app oaches encou age s uden s o use language o
meaning ul pu poses, engage in collabo a i e asks, and in e ac luen ly in a ied
con ex s.[1],[2] In eg a ing linguis ic skill-building wi hin cul u ally and digi ally
en iched en i onmen s inc eases ele ance and lea ne mo i a ion.[3]
Cul u al Compe ence and In e cul u al Awa eness. Cul u e plays an indispensable
ole in language because language i sel is a e lec ion o cul u al alues, no ms, and
p ac ices. Lea ne s who lack cul u al awa eness o en misin e p e messages, misuse
language, o ail o g asp social expec a ions. In e cul u al compe ence encompasses
unde s anding cul u al p ac ices, ecognizing di e si y, de eloping empa hy, and
na iga ing c oss-cul u al communica ion.[4],[5]
Mode n pedagogical amewo ks, such as Con en and Language In eg a ed Lea ning
(CLIL) and in e cul u al communica i e compe ence models, emphasize exposu e o
au hen ic cul u al ma e ials, discussions o cul u al di e ences, and c i ical
e lec ion.[5] These enable lea ne s o shi om a pu ely linguis ic unde s anding o
he a ge language o a mo e holis ic app ecia ion o i s cul u al con ex . In eg a ing
cul u al compe ence in o language eaching also p omo es ole ance, open-mindedness,
and global ci izenship—quali ies ha a e essen ial in inc easingly mul icul u al

dynamic h ough i ual exchanges, online cul u al simula ions, and mul imedia

lea ne s wi h he skills needed o pa icipa e con iden ly and e ec i ely in mul ilingual
